Stan
Albrecht Named New USU President
USU
didn’t have to look very far for its new president. Stan
Albrecht, formerly the executive vice president and vice
provost, was unanimously voted Utah State’s 15th president
by the Utah Board of Regents. This appointment came after
former USU President Kermit Hall’s resignation. President
Albrecht officially assumed his new post on February 1,
2005.
President
Albrecht’s career in education spans many successful decades.
He received his bachelor’s degree from BYU, and his master’s
degree and doctorate from Washington State University.
After completing his education, he served in a variety
of positions at BYU, and as an administrator and professor
at the University of Florida. President Albrecht began
his career at USU as an assistant professor of sociology
in 1970.
“Selecting
a president is the most important assignment we have,”
said Board of Regents Chair Nolan E. Karras. “We are pleased
to name the right man at the right time.”
President
Albrecht is married to Joyce Albrecht, former associate
vice president for University Advancement.
Founders
Day Honorees
Every
year Utah State University holds the Founders Day celebration.
This event is conducted in honor of the founding of USU
on March 8, 1888. Part of the day’s festivities is the
Alumni Association’s Founders Day Banquet, which honors
the year’s winners of the Distinguished Service and Distinguished
Alumnus Awards.
This
year's event will take place on Saturday, March 5 at the
Little America Hotel Ballroom in Salt Lake City. The reception
will begin at 6 p.m. with the dinner following at 7 p.m.
The cost is $40 per person and formal attire is encouraged.

2005
Distinguished Alumnus Award Recipients
David
Kragthorpe
If
you love college football in the West, there’s a good
chance you’ve heard of David Kragthorpe. You might remember
him from his days as a two way tackle (’51-’54) at Utah
State University, where he also played baseball. Following
his graduation (BS ’55, MS ’63), Mr. Kragthorpe coached
the Idaho State Bengals to their first national championship
and was chosen Coach of the Year by the Pac 10 for his
success at Oregon State.
In
1994, he was hired by the USU Alumni Association to resurrect
the university’s alumni chapters. Today, despite officially
retiring four years ago, Mr. Kragthorpe can still be found
at his desk in the Alumni Office, overseeing the USU alumni
chapters in Idaho and northern Nevada.
Col.
Doyle “Dode” Rees
While his career may have taken him all over
the world, Colonel Doyle “Dode” Rees has always stayed
close to his roots. Born in Benson, Utah, Col. Rees attended
the Utah Agricultural College and earned the nickname
“High-Power” Rees as a lineman on the football team.
After
graduating from UAC, Col. Rees planned to attend law school,
but was called into military service at the outbreak of
World War II, just short of graduation. Following the
war, he was promoted to colonel in the U.S. Air Force
and became part of the Office of Special Investigations.
He also served in the Pentagon as commandant of the Air
Force Investigation School.
Col.
Rees retired from the Air Force in 1963, but his was not
the typical retirement. From his home in Logan, he worked
for the CIA as a special investigator, chaired the boards
of the Cache County March of Dimes and American Red Cross,
and established an ROTC Scholarship at USU.

Distinguished Service Award Recipients
Jonathan
Bullen
Jonathan
W. Bullen was born and raised in Logan, Utah, where he
graduated with a degree in business from Utah State University
in 1978. Today, he is one of the largest stockholders
of portfolio real estate assets managed by Wasatch Property
Management, with holdings and properties in Utah, Arizona,
Nevada, and California. In addition, he is the owner and
president of Provo College, Eagle Gate College, and Evolution
Fitness. He is also the owner and manager of Bullen and
Harris LLC, a management and investment company.
Mr.
Bullen’s community service includes serving as the executive
director of the Capitol Arts Alliance from 1990-1992.
The Alliance spearheaded the renovation of the Ellen Eccles
Theatre and Bullen Center in downtown Logan. In addition
to serving as a trustee and board member of the Mormon
Historic Sites Foundation, he also serves as chairman
of the Utah State University Foundation and the Oquirrh
Institute, and is a member of the Utah Opera Chorus.
Richard
and Moonyeen Anderson
Richard and Moonyeen Anderson have participated
in a long career of service, both to USU and their community.
Mrs. Anderson graduated from Utah State in 1958 with a
degree in social work, while Mr. Anderson followed a year
later with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
Together, they have done much to support USU and the College
of Engineering, including an endowed scholarship and a
naming gift for the new Richard and Moonyeen Anderson
Wireless Communication Research and Education Center located
in the new engineering building.
Mr.
Anderson enjoyed careers with Hewlett-Packard and the
Microwave and Communication Group. He currently serves
as a trustee for the Utah State University Foundation
and is a member of the College of Engineering Advisory
Board. Mrs. Anderson has used her education to serve as
a counselor with the LDS Church Social Service Program.
Bonnie
Parkin
Bonnie Parkin has been called upon many times
to act as a leader to those around her. She served as
the ASUSU Senior Class Vice President and as President
of the Kappa Delta Sorority. Mrs. Parkin graduated from
USU in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education
and has put that education to good use. She has been PTA
president, docent, and Utah Senate Page. Within the LDS
Church, she served on the Relief Society General Board
and in the Young Women’s General Presidency. Currently,
she presides as General President of the Relief Society.
At
Utah State, she has given generously to the Bonnie Dansie
Parkin scholarship. In 2003, Mrs. Parkin was awarded the
Alumni Merit Citation.

take place from 3-5 p.m. on the Sunset Deck, Fifth Floor.
Come and enjoy great tailgate food, raffles, and give-aways.
The

Community Events
The Scarlet Pimpernel
The
Cache County Regional Theatre Company production of the
“Scarlet Pimpernel” is set to take the stage with
a current USU student in the lead role. Matt Dickamore,
an Interior Design major, plays the role of Sir Percy
in the retelling of the literary classic by Baroness Emmuska
Orczy. In the story, Percy leads his band of crusaders
in saving innocent citizens during the bloody French Revolution.
“It
has a little bit of everything: comedy, drama, romance,
sword-fighting, and an amazing musical score,” says Dickamore.
The
“Scarlet Pimpernel” will be performed Feb. 18, 19 and
24-26 at the Ellen Eccles Theatre in Logan. Tickets and

Jazz Night at
the Skyroom
Start
your Valentine’s Day a little early with the Jazz Night
at the Sky Club, brought to you by the Utah State
University Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble. The orchestra
will be joined by featured vocalists and special guest
artist Larry Smith. The event takes place Feb. 11 and
12 at 7 p.m. in the Skyroom Restaurant.
Dine
in the authentic atmosphere of a 1930s nightclub as you’re
surrounded by the sounds of smooth jazz. Dance with that
special someone as the orchestra and vocalists serenade
you with the music of Bobby Darin, Duke Ellington, Glenn

Come meet the new USU President Stan Albrecht as the Cache
County Aggie Chapter hosts a Pre-Game Party at Hamilton's
Restaurant. The event will be held prior to the USU-Idaho
Basketball Game on March 4. A Soup and Salad bar will
