USU Alumni Spotlight - Todd Poulsen

The San Diego Chargers football stadium is where Aggie Todd Poulsen now calls home, at least from 9-5. Todd is currently head of ticket sales and services and the day-to-day supervision of the team’s ticket office. His career with major league sports all started with his Marketing degree from USU. Todd said, "I truly believe the successes I have realized professionally and personally can be attributed, at least in part, to my involvement with Utah State."
Todd became interested in marketing during his high school years and joined the Distributive Education Clubs of America. His work in the DECA organization led to his participation in a state level competition. It was then that Todd was first able to visit the campus of Utah State. After visiting the campus Todd naturally developed a fondness for Logan and Utah State. When the time came for him to choose a college, the decision was an easy one. A decision, Todd said, that he will always treasure.
During his time at Utah State, Todd learned more about marketing as well as more about what USU’s campus has to offer. Todd remembers some of his favorite memories being "Sitting on the Quad with my friends on crisp fall days, pulling "all nighters" cramming for tests, saving seats in the Spectrum for the USU basketball games, [and] working in the Field House trying to earn money to pay tuition." All of these things added to his great experience as an Aggie.
Attending Utah State provided Todd with a leg up on his future career in marketing as well as some lifelong connections. "Utah State provided me with not only a great education but also lifelong friendships I have to this day", Todd said, "I became great friends with a fellow student, Danny Loveland. We are lifelong friends to this day." Like many other Aggies, Todd Poulsen was able to make the most out of his experience at Utah State. While having fun at sporting events, attending class and making new friends, Todd was also able to keep site of his future goals by completing internships in his field. That is part of the advice he gives to his fellow Aggies, that staying focused and completing internships will help you make it in your chosen career field.
When looking for future candidates to work with him today at the San Diego Chargers stadium, internships are something Todd looks for on a resume.
"In most cases, some type of previous work experience; whether internships, or minor league experience, is often the determining factor which separates one qualified candidate from another. I believe an internship, or entry level position, should be viewed as just an extension of your education so if it takes another year or two of "education" to achieve your ultimate goals then it was time well spent."
Todd's own experience completing an internship led to his first job after graduation at Hill Air Force Base. After working for Hill Air Force Base, Todd went on to work with the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers as well as the Minnesota Timberwolves. Todd currently lives with his family in in San Diego where he continues his work in sports marketing.
Merit Citation - Alvin Wardle
Alvin Wardle was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho on March 5, 1928. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad while attending high school. He joined the Army before graduating and served in a band in Germany. Upon returning home he enrolled at Brigham Young University where he became re-acquainted with Mary Elizabeth Gibbs, whom he had met in high school. They were married July 28, 1950. They have two children, Lindalee (deceased) and John. Alvin graduated from BYU in 1951 with a degree in German and taught for 2 years in Declo, Idaho. Then, in 1953, Alvin and Mary came to Utah State to pursue a Master of Music Education degree under John Phillip Dalby. During his time at Utah State he was a member of the Summer Music Clinic staff, and played in the Directors Band which later became the USU Alumni Band. From 1954 to 1959 he was Director of Bands in the Carbon County Schools and at the College of Eastern Utah, giving students there "a musical experience that can never be forgotten." In 1959 Dr. Max Dalby invited Al to join him as Associate Director of Bands at Utah State University. He has also served as brass instructor, associate and acting head of the music department, chairman of music education and curriculum, and chairman of the Summer Music Clinic for 26 years. He was a senator from the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences in the Utah State Faculty Senate for six years. In 1969 he completed doctoral studies at Florida State University where a former student, Dr. Cliff Madsen, was head of the music education department. Dr. Wardle has also done graduate work at the University of Colorado and the Eastman School of Music. He was chosen as president-elect of the Utah Music Educators Association, and then became president in 1979. He has been editor of the UMEA Magazine, Research and Higher Education Representative, and has presented many seminars and clinics. He is a respected adjudicator and has conducted many Honor Bands throughout the West. In 1981 he was presented the UMEA Outstanding Music Educator Award. It would be impossible to quantify the tremendous infl uence Dr. Wardle has had on music students at Utah State University and throughout the Western United States. He is an incredible teacher. From all of your students, colleagues, and friends, "Thank you for giving so much, to so many, for so long." For all his service and the distinction he brings to his alma mater, the Utah State University Alumni Association proudly presents this Merit Citation to Alvin Wardle.
Merit Citation - Milton Haderlie
Milton K. Haderlie graduated from Utah State University in 1964 with his Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Management. While at USU, Milton met Elizabeth Bullock, who graduated in 1963 with a degree in Physical Education and a minor in English. They were married in August 1964. They have four children, all of whom followed their parents to USU. Milton was employed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service as a Refuge Manager. His career took him to National Wildlife Refuges in Arizona, Utah, California, Oregon, Montana, and finally Idaho where he retired following 34 years of distinguished service. Elizabeth passed away in 1999 of cancer. To honor her memory, Milton set up a scholarship endowment at Utah State for students in Physical Education in Elizabeth's name. Following Elizabeth's passing Milton married Louise Winward, a native Idahoan. Between them they have five children and 11 grandchildren. In light of family events, Milton developed a keen interest in hearing disorders as three grandchildren were born with such disorders. They have been involved in ground breaking research and development for cochlear implants and the training of young children. Milton, Louise and their children have been very supportive in this effort at USU, making a difference not only for their own grandchildren but for countless other families as well. Milton is very proud of his degree and affiliation with Utah State University and has always been a strong and faithful Aggie - a love which he has passed on to his children. For his dedication to his chosen career and the distinction he brings to his alma mater, the Utah State University Alumni Association proudly bestows this Merit Citation upon Milton K. Haderlie.

Mold Prevention
When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed.
The key to mold control is moisture control.
Fix leaks and seepage as soon as you notice the issue.
Put a plastic cover over dirt in crawl spaces to prevent moisture from coming in from the ground.
Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to remove moisture to the outside.
Vent your clothes dryer to the outside.
Turn off certain appliances (such as humidifiers or kerosene heaters) if you notice moisture on windows and other surfaces.
Use dehumidifiers and air conditioners, especially in hot, humid climates, to reduce moisture in the air.
Raise the temperature of cold surfaces where moisture condenses.
Use insulation or storm windows.
Increase air circulation by using fans and by moving furniture from wall corners to promote air and heat circulation and keep doors open between rooms
Carpet on concrete floors can absorb moisture and serve as a place for biological pollutants to grow - use area rugs which can be taken up and washed often
Dry water-damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
Dealing with Mold
Get rid of the excess water or moisture.
Absorbent materials (such as ceiling tiles & carpet) that become moldy may have to be replaced.
Contact a mold remediation specialist.

Davis County Aggie Football Watch Party 
Join Aggies from Davis County for the first USU football game of the year. On Saturday, September 3rd, USU will kick off the season in Auburn, Alabama. Ralph Rampton |
Highlight: I'm 92 years old, a WWII Vet, retired FBI Agent. Started at Utah State in 1935, class of 1939, but graduated after WWII in 1946. I was known as "Junior" Rampton while in school, first name Ralph used after joining the Navy and FBI. Played a mean trumpet while in college for which I was recognized and employed with numerous orchestras locally and nationally. I was a member of Phi Kappa Iota fraternity, and married fellow student Bonnie Bea Reese while in second year of college (1938) who was a well known campus beauty and member of Alpha Chi Omega. During our 64 years of marriage we produced five children, four of whom graduated from Utah State in spite of our many residences elsewhere during their lives. Bonnie Bea died in 2002. I have only lived in Utah since 2000. Our oldest son, Ralph is a retired cardiologist, graduate of Johns Hopkins Medical School, followed by Carolyn who graduated from Utah State and was active in the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She married fellow student, Michael Maughan. Our 3rd child, Gregory is a retired FBI Agent and a Security Officer of the LDS Church and graduated of Utah State. Our next son Scott graduated from Utah State as did our final son, Michael, Scott is a purchasing Agent and Michael is a geologist. |

Utah State Football and Basketball Games Will Be Broadcast on KCSG Television Beginning This Fall
During the 2011-12 academic year, KCSG TV will broadcast five Aggie football games and six basketball games.
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State University Director of Athletics Scott Barnes announced Thursday that USU Athletics will have a new home beginning this fall as select football and basketball games will be televised live on KCSG Television in cooperation with Cis-Com Productions.
In conjunction with Aggie Sports Properties, the school's Athletics multimedia rights holder, Utah State is entering its third year of a four-year contract with Cis-Com Productions to televise numerous football and basketball games live.
During the 2011-12 academic year, KCSG TV will broadcast five Aggie football games and six basketball games. Its first football broadcast will be on Saturday, Sept. 24 when USU hosts Colorado State at 6 p.m. Other football games to be televised live on KCSG include home contests against Wyoming (10/8), San Jose State (11/12) and Nevada (11/26), and a road game at New Mexico State (12/3).
USU's Kerwynn Williams Named To Paul Hornung Award Watch List
Aggie Standout Is One Of Three WAC Players, Lone Utah Player On 50-Player List For Award
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State football player Kerwynn Williams has been named to the 2011 Paul Hornung Award Watch List. The award, presented by Texas Roadhouse, is given annually by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) to the most versatile player in major college football.
Last season as a sophomore, Williams, a native of Las Vegas, Nev. (Valley HS), set four new NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) records, including single-season kickoff yards (1,444), most yards returned per game in a season (120.3 ypg) and career (112.0), along with most returns per game for career (4.26). Williams also led the Western Athletic Conference and ranked sixth in FBS in all-purpose yards per game (170.2 ypg) and also led the conference and ranked 21st in the country in kickoff return average (27.3).
"It is a tremendous honor to be named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List and be considered as one of the most versatile players in the country," Williams said. "I'm going to take this honor to heart and it is more motivation to work hard this season to try and be a finalist for the award."
Utah State Ranks Among Most Economically Efficient Athletic Departments In Nation For Third Straight Year
During the 2010-11 academic year, Utah State won Western Athletic Conference championships in men's basketball, women's soccer, and men's indoor and outdoor track & field.
LOGAN, Utah - For the third year in a row, Utah State has been recognized as one of the most efficient athletic departments in the nation as it placed fourth for the Excellence in Management Cup, presented by Texas A&M's Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics (LSIA).
Utah State won the national championship in 2009 and finished third nationally in 2010.
The purpose of the Excellence in Management Cup is to determine which athletic departments win the most championships in accordance to financial expenditures. The EM Cup awards athletic departments that win the most conference and national championships, while at the same time have the lowest expenses.
Aggie Football Family Fun Day Set For Saturday, August 27

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's sixth-annual Aggie Football Family Fun Day, sponsored by Macey's Foods, will be held Saturday, Aug. 27 at Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium in conjunction with the USU football scrimmage. The event provides fans a chance to meet USU football players and coaches, participate in games and activities as well as pickup season tickets.
Two Wasatch Front Football League (WFFL) youth games start the day's action, kicking off at 8:15 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Fans can also sign up for 2011 Jr. Aggies at the sign-up table located inside gates on the south concourse. Cost for Jr. Aggies is $25 and is open to kids currently attending pre-school through 8th grade.
Games and activities will get started on the South Concourse of Romney Stadium at 11 a.m., while USU football's scrimmage gets underway at Noon.
Following the scrimmage, fans can get their favorite Aggie autographs and play catch with a USU player on the field. There is no cost to attend the event and everyone is welcome to meet the Aggies, head coach Gary Andersen and the Utah State coaching staff that afternoon.
