SWING FEVER AT USU
 

LOGAN, UT – Come swing with the Utah State University Big Bands in their final concert of the semester Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall on USU’s Logan campus.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to feature our new trumpet professor, Dr. Max Matzen, in the concert,” said Jon Gudmundson, director of jazz studies in the Caine College of the Arts. “Although this is his first semester here, he is already making a tremendously positive impact on our music students with his excellent teaching. At this concert, the community will be able to hear that he is also a tremendous trumpet player.”

Both the Jazz Orchestra and the Jazz Ensemble groups will perform in the concert, with Matzen performing in three pieces. The Jazz Orchestra will perform “Thunderbird,” written by Ray Anthony and George Williams, “Some Skunk Funk” written by Randy Brecker, “Central Park North” by Thad Jones and “Swing House” by Gerry Mulligan.

The Jazz Ensemble will perform “Chickenscratch” by Les Hooper, “As Long As I’m Singin’” by Bobby Darin, “Esperanza” by John LaBarbera and “Boogie Stomp Shuffle” by Charles Mingus. Student vocalist Betsy Nelson will be featured in “As Long As I’m Singin’.”

“The program is inclusive of music that is great to listen to as well as perform,” said Greg Wheeler, director of the Jazz Ensemble group and professor in the Caine College of the Arts.

Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 seniors and youth, $5 USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID.
