USU Alumni Spotlight - Rick Haskins 
Spotlight by Liz Wilson
Rick Haskins is one of the most prominent names in television marketing today. Since his graduation from Utah State in 1979, he has had continual professional success. For Rick, Utah State was a natural choice when it came to choosing a school. "I chose Utah State because my dad is actually from here and both my parents went to Utah State," Haskins said, "I always really liked the setting, I like campus and I thought it would be a great place for an education."
Logan proved a great place to learn the skills necessary to be successful in a career. Haskins also credits his participation in a fraternity with helping him gain the full college experience. "I was Sigma Chi [and] I really loved it. It was a great addition to the overall curriculum and education that I got because I think it provided the people part of education ... having a degree is half the battle," Haskins said, "knowing how to interact with other people is the other half of the battle."
After finishing his undergraduate degree, Mr. Haskins had a goal to work for a Fortune 500 Company. With a degree in psychology, Haskins proceeded to pursue his dream." His 27 year career in marketing began with his first job at Proctor and Gamble, number 23 on the Fortune 500 list. While with Proctor and Gamble Haskins was able to explore his interests in the field of marketing. Haskins explained, "as soon as I was into it, it really did fit my personality and the skills that I was good at. From then on I was definitely hooked."
From there, he continued to work for several other prominent companies including The Walt Disney Company. During his 8 years with Disney's Buena Vista Television Haskins worked on promoting many popular programs like "Regis and Kathy Lee", "Golden Girls", and "Home Improvement". "Mr. Haskins has also served as Executive Vice President for Lifetime Television. He is currently the Executive Vice President of Marketing and Brand Strategy for the CW television station. Under his direction, CW has been awarded two Lions at the International Cannes Media Festival and named number two Mobile Marketer of the year by Mobile Marketing Daily in 2009.
Along with a career in marketing Rick has also authored a book about how to brand yourself. The book highlights how people can create an identity of their own that will help market themselves to potential employers. With this method, Haskins has launched himself into a varied and successful multi-corporation career.
Mr. Haskins has also made a philanthropic effort to share what he has with others by helping build several schools in Ghana, China and India. He travels frequently between those three places. On working to build the schools he said, "That was the best decision I ever made."
Haskins has pursued a variety of jobs and pursuits that allowed him to branch out into many fields. For those Aggie's who would like to have similar success Rick says, "Don't limit your dreams, and be willing to sacrifice for your career."

USU Merit Citation - Jack Keller 
Dr. Jack Keller has a unique blend of engineering experience that includes teaching, research, consulting and humanitarian service. His more than 90 technical papers, 50 major reports, 9 handbooks, and two textbooks in the areas of irrigated agricultural development, water management, water resource planning and engineering, on-farm water management, and irrigation systems design indentify him as a leader in the field.
He has provided technical assistance for irrigation projects in over 60 countries, bringing thousands of hectares (acres) under cultivation. Each time he visited a project he made it a point to interview individual farmers, those who benefited from having water for their parched ground or who would like to benefit from a dependable supply of water. Through these interviews he developed an understanding of the needs of the small-plot farmer. When he learned of a group that was supplying small-plot farmers with irrigation components they needed, he quickly became associated with them. When the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation learned that Jack was part of the group they made their first-ever grant for agriculture water, and they continue to support these projects.
Jack used his knowledge and skill to improve all components of the low-cost systems sold to farmers. These changes have produced systems that are more reliable under local conditions, such as sediment-laden water with low pressure. These changes include drip line emitters, supply lines, treadle pumps, and rope and washer pumps. He developed a small, low volume and low pressure sprinkler that is effective in small plots.
His work has been on-going in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh where 1.5 million farmers have been helped. A total of one-half million more water systems have been installed in countries in Asia, Africa, and Central America. The water makes additional cash crops possible. With higher income from their small-plot systems the farmers are able to improve their living quarters, provide education for their children, better nutrition and medical care for their families.
Jack has donated thousands of hours and personal resources to this important activity. More significant has been the contribution of his professional knowledge and understanding. While others have honored him for a productive and distinguished career, we are proud to honor Dr. Jack Keller with this Alumni Merit Citation for his selfless service to millions of the world's citizens and for his vision of the tremendous change only a few can accomplish.

FREE Practice Test
On Saturday February 12th at 10:00am, Kaplan is providing a FREE opportunity for students to take a practice GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, OAT, or PCAT. The event will be held at Weber State University in the Shepherd Union Building. This event is open to anyone who would like to take a practice test, even if you are not a current WSU student.
Each test will last up to 3 hours and will be proctored like an actual exam. After the test, one of our amazing instructors will give a short workshop on test-taking strategies and will answer any questions that you may have.
This is a great opportunity for students to see how they might score on the real thing, and also to get an idea of the kinds of questions that will be on the real test. The exams will be scored and returned to students later that afternoon with comprehensive feedback about their individual performance on the test.

Winter's Last Blast
You may be dreaming of spring, but don't forget the cold, hard facts: Old Man Winter still has plenty of time to deliver a deadly blizzard or ice storm. Follow these tips if you lose power in your home or are stranded in your car.
At Home
- Replenish dwindling emergency supplies, including food, water and batteries.
- Stock plenty of dry logs for your fireplace.
- If you lose electricity that powers your thermostats and furnace, wear warm clothes and keep extra blankets nearby. NEVER turn on a gas oven to supply heat.
- Instead of candles, use flashlights and battery-powered lanterns to provide light.
In Your Vehicle
- Stay inside, but if it's safe to do so, hang a colored cloth on your antenna or lay flares on the road to indicate distress.
- Run the heater for 10 minutes every hour with the engine on so you don't drain your battery.
- Crack a window for fresh air.
- Put on extra layers of clothing or wrap yourself in a blanket.
- Try to stay awake if you're alone or alternate taking naps with your passengers.
- If water is unavailable, melt snow before you eat it; otherwise it will lower your body temperature.

Utah State Men's Basketball Ranked 17th In Latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll and 21st In Associated Press Poll
USU is 22-3 on the season and 11-1 in WAC play.
LOGAN, Utah - For the second straight week, Utah State's men's basketball team is ranked in both national polls and is now 17th in the nation in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll released Monday and 21st in the latest Associated Press poll. USU was ranked 21st in last week's coaches' poll and 22nd in the AP poll.
The No. 17 ranking in this week's ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll is the highest-ever ranking for Utah State in that poll which expanded from 20 to 25 teams prior to the 1990-91 season. USU was also ranked 17th in coaches' poll during the 2008-09 season.
The No. 21 ranking in this week's AP poll is the highest by an Aggie team since the 2008-09 team was also ranked 21st. USU was also ranked 19th in the weekly AP poll during the 2003-04 season. Overall, it is the second time in the last three years and the third time in the past eight seasons that Utah State has been ranked in both polls.
The last time a Utah State team was ranked higher than 17th in any poll was at the end of the 1974-75 season when it was ranked 13th in the final United Press International Coaches' poll.
Former USU Football Player Jarrett Bush And Assistant Coach John Rushing Are Super Bowl Champs 
Cornerback Bush And Assistant Coach Rushing Help Packers To Super Bowl XLV Win
LOGAN, Utah - Former Utah State football player Jarrett Bush and assistant coach John Rushing are Super Bowl champions after helping the Green Bay Packers to a 31-25 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers to win Super Bowl XLV Sunday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Bush is one of five players with ties to the Western Athletic Conference on the Packers' rosters, joining G Daryn Colledge (Boise State), FB Korey Hall (Boise State), WR James Jones (San Jose State) and CB Tramon Williams (Louisiana Tech).
Additionally, Bush is one of two players from a Utah school on the Packers' roster, but is the only active player as LB Brady Poppinga from BYU is on Green Bay's injured reserve list.
Bush becomes the first former USU football player to be Super Bowl champion since Rod Moore was on the Super Bowl XXIX winning San Francisco 49ers in 1994, helping the 49ers to a 49-26 win over the San Diego Chargers. Overall, Bush is the sixth former Aggie player to be on the Super Bowl winning team, joining Lionel Alderidge, who was a member of the Super Bowl I and II champions in 1966 and 1967, Jim Turner on the Super Bowl III winning New York Jets in 1968, Cornell Green of the Super Bowl VI champions in 1971, Solomon Miller of the Super Bowl XXI winning New York Giants in 1986 and Moore in 1994.
Utah State Men And Women's Track And Field Teams Sweep WAC Athletes Of The Week
Allred And Silcock Win Men's Respective Track And Field Honors While Hirschi and Hawkins Garner Women's Awards
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men and women's track and field teams swept the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Men and Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week as it was announced by the league office Tuesday, for the week of Jan. 31-Feb. 6, respectively. Receiving the awards for the men were seniors James Allred and Clint Silcock while freshman Kylie Hirschi and Chari Hawkins garnered the honors for the women.
Allred, a senior from Helena, Mont. (Capital HS), set a career-best mark in the 800-meters at the New Mexico Classic on Feb. 4-5 in Albuquerque, N.M. Allred's altitude adjusted time of 1:50.06 was not only the best time of his career, it was also the best time in the WAC this season in the 800m event.
Silcock, a senior from Salmon, Idaho (Butte HS), remained undefeated in the high jump this season after winning the event at the New Mexico Classic over the weekend. Silcock's leap of 2.24 meters (7-04.25 ) set the Utah State school record, edging out Dave Hoffman's record of 2.23m set in 1999. His mark is the best in the WAC this season, automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Championships and ties him with Ricky Robertson from Mississippi for the best height in the high jump around the nation last week. Silcock ranks fifth in the nation this season in the high jump. Silcock also was named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Feb. 6, an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
Hirschi, a freshman from Sandy, Utah (Brighton HS), set a career best mark in the 800 meters at the New Mexico Classic on Feb. 4-5 in Albuquerque, N.M. Hirschi's altitude adjusted time of 2:14.68 netted her second-place in the event, and is currently the best 800m time in the WAC this season. She was also a member of the 4x400 meter relay team that claimed second-place with a time of 3:47.08, which is the second-fastest time in the WAC this year.
Hawkins, a freshman from Rexburg, Idaho (Madison HS), had a career-best day in the high jump at the New Mexico Classic. Her career-high leap of 1.73 meters (5-08.00) earned her a fourth-place finish in the high jump and also tied her with Sarah Saddleton of Hawaii for the best jump in the WAC this season.
Aggie Women's Basketball Wins Fifth-Straight
Utah State uses 22-point performance from sophomore Banna Diop to secure the win.
LOGAN, Utah - Sophomore center Banna Diop scored a career-high 22 points, including 20 in the second half to lead the Utah State women's basketball team to a, 70-64, victory Thursday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The win was the Aggies' fifth-straight and the second five-game winning streak of the season. USU also won five-straight from Nov. 27 to Dec. 8.
With the win, Utah State improves to 13-10 overall and 7-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Vandals fall to 12-10 overall and 5-5 in WAC action. The fifth-straight WAC win for the Aggies is their longest-conference winning streak since the 1975-76 season when USU finished 10-3 in Intermountain Athletic Conference action.
Along with 22 points from Diop, sophomore Devyn Christensen and junior Ashlee Brown both added 11 points. Brown also led the Aggies with eight boards. Senior Alice Coddington was crucial on the defensive end with six steals. Coddington has 214 steals in her career and is now two steals away from tying the USU record for held by assistant coach Danyelle Snelgro (2005-09) with 216 in her career.
Idaho had all five of its starters score in double digits and were lead by a 16 point, 14 rebounds performance from Yinka Olorunnife. Derisa Taleni also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Utah State earned the first points of the game with a layup from sophomore Banna Diop at the 17-minute mark as neither team sunk a bucket for almost the first three minutes. The Vandals used aggressive offense to climb the scoreboard eventually going up by 14 points with six minutes left in the first half. USU halted Idaho and ended the half with an 11-2 run, leaving the Aggies down by five as the score at half was 29-24.
