Fairytales Come to Life at USU

Students from Utah State University's Department of Music present "Never in Your Wildest Dreams: Opera’s Fairytales and Fantasies" Nov. 16-17. The performance is free.
The Music Department at Utah State University presents Never in Your Wildest Dreams: Opera’s Fairytales and Fantasies Nov. 16-17 at 7:30 p.m. Two performance locations are offered.
“This performance is fun, frivolous and a great way to spend the evening with the whole family,” said Lynn Jemison-Keisker, associate professor of voice in the Caine College of the Arts at USU.
Forty undergraduate students will perform various opera scenes spanning three centuries, from Mozart to Bernstein to Gilbert and Sullivan. The scenes are comedic and romantic, with all pieces sung in English, said Jemison-Keisker.
Selections include segments from Albert Herring, a comedy by Benjamin Britten, The Emperor’s New Clothes, a fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen, and Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, based on an 18th century French novel by Voltaire. Bernstein has added a hopeful, uplifting and inspiring interpretation to Voltaire’s work, said Jemison-Keisker.
The performance is free and open to the public.
The Friday, Nov. 16, performance is presented in room 214 of the Chase Fine Arts Center on USU’s Logan campus. The Saturday, Nov. 17, performance is presented at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 85 E. 100 North, Logan.
