USU Alumni Spotlight - Jim Laub This month, meet Jim Laub, President/CEO and owner of Cache Valley Electric Company.  Jim directs this privately owned and operated company that specializes in commercial and industrial electrical construction.  CVE was started in 1915 by Jim’s grandfather, Henry F. Laub. The corporate headquarters for this nationally recognized construction firm, which employs 600 plus employees, remains in Logan, Utah with offices and projects spread across the United States.    In 1974, Jim started at Cache Valley Electric as a project estimator/manager working under the direction of his father, Jack Laub, who was President and CEO from 1959 to 1982.  Jim continued as a project estimator/manager and was eventually promoted to the role of Vice President of Operations.  Now, Jim oversees and directs projects nationally and internationally with annual revenues in excess of $80M.  He was recognized by Ernst & Young with the Entrepreneur of the year award in 1999 and has been ranked as one of the Top 50 electrical contractors in the nation the past six years by Engineering News Record. Jim actively serves on many boards throughout the community.  In 1989, he was appointed as a member of the Utah State University Board of Trustees and actively served until 1997.  Additionally, he has served on the Sunshine Terrace Board of Directors as Vice President and Chairman of the Development Committee.  The Laub family has been a long time supporter of Utah State University and is credited for the recently constructed training facility that was built on the Logan campus for the students and athletes attending USU. Jim graduated from Utah State University in 1974 with a Bachelors of Science degree.  He continued his education at Arizona State University.  Jim currently resides in Logan, Utah with his wife Carol (Balls) and two sons Mark and Eric.

 

Old Lyric Repertory Company The Old Lyric Repertory Company (OLRC) is the professional summer theatre program offered by Utah State University's Department of Theatre Arts and the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.  The OLRC is currently wrapping up its 37th season, producing five shows playing in repertory from June 12 through August 9. The Caine Lyric Theatre in downtown Logan (28 West Center St.) comes alive with actors, technicians and patrons for each summer of live theatre.  Pricing and ticket information for next season is available by calling (435) 797-0305 or visiting www.usu.edu/lyric. USU vs. University of Utah Football Pre-game Party

2003 Out-of-State Football Tailgates
Scheduled times for the out-of-state football tailgates this fall (sponsored by USU Alumni Relations and Athletics) are now set.  The cost of each tailgate will be $15.  If you live in any of these areas or you're planning to attend one of the games, join in the fun and good food at this year's tailgates.  Please RSVP to the Alumni Office at 797-2055 or 800-291-2586 two weeks prior to the selected game(s).  For game tickets call the USU ticket office at 1-888-USTATE1.

Aggie Hiker In July, Aggie alumna, Paula Huff Bryant stopped by the Alumni House with husband LtCol. Mark Bryant.  Paula has co-authored (Paula Huff & Tom Wharton) a book any outdoor enthusiast would treasure.  Hiking Utah's Summits is a hiking guide that includes interesting stories about the highest peak in each of the state's 29 counties.  This book guides you on a journey of exploration across the entire state of Utah.  We agree with Paula, our alumni are first rate!

A.R.T.
Tim Lefens, a USU alumnus, has been gaining national media attention with the establishment of Art Realization Technologies (A.R.T.).  A.R.T. is a nonprofit company started in 1995, that creates technologies and art programs that let disabled artists explore painting, photography, and sculpture.  It creates systems that enable creative self-expression of people with the most severe physical challenges.  Lefens has written a book about his journey called, "Flying Colors: The Story of a Remarkable Group of Artists and the Transcendent Power of Art."  The high quality of the art has been recognized through numerous exhibits and awards.  It has been selected by Reader's Digest for both a magazine excerpt and a condensed book offering.  To find out more about the book, view a CBS video, or for purchase information:  http://www.artrealization.org

Golden Aggie Reunion Members of the Class of 1953 recently met to reunite, recall, and rekindle friendships from 50 years ago.  Activities included campus tours, lectures, and a theater performance in addition to laughing, visiting, and remembering old times.  The 50-year reunion is held each summer in honor of those entering the ranks of "Golden Aggies".

Davis County
The Davis County Aggie Scholarship Golf Tournament is August 29 at Eaglewood golf course. The fourth annual tournament gets under way at noon with check-in and lunch at North Canyon Park Pavilion, 3900 South Bountiful Blvd.  The shotgun start for the four-man scramble is 1:00 p.m. at Eaglewood, 1110 Eaglewood Drive in North Salt Lake.  Registration is $65 per person.  Per foursome, the cost is $300.  The price includes green fees, cart, luncheon and awards ceremony snack.  Deadline for registering is August 15. Hole sponsorships are available at $300 with hole and foursome sponsorships at $400.  Anyone interested in a hole sponsorship or in making a product or service donation should contact Patty Halaufia at 800-291-2586.  All proceeds will be used to provide scholarships for Davis County students attending USU.

San Diego Chapter
Enjoy an enchanting evening with the Aggies as we sail around San Diego Harbor on a private luxury yacht, the Newport Hornblower.  The schedule is Saturday, August 16 on San Diego Bay.  The ship departs at 7:00 p.m. and the cost is $40 per person.   Dress is nice business casual.  Hors d’oeuvres, a light dinner and a beverage are included. Eastern Idaho Chapter
Bring your family and join in the fun of Eastern Idaho Aggie Family Night on Thursday, August 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Riot Zone in Rigby.  Special guests will be USU Women's Head Basketball Coach, Reagan Scott Pebley and Men's Assistant Basketball Coach, Randy Rahe.  Enjoy discount rides, catered food (hamburgers, hotdogs, drinks), free Aggie ice cream, an auction, and a raffle.  All proceeds support scholarships.  To get to The Riot Zone take Hwy. 20 to N. Rigby Exit then west to Frontage Road.  Everyone will gather at the picnic shelter behind the ticket booth.

Tooele County Aggie Chapter
An Aggie Family Pool Party is being sponsored on Saturday, August 16, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Deseret Peak Pool.  All Aggies will receive a 50% discount to the pool ($2 per swimmer).  Look for the Aggie banner and tent at the pool to pick up your discount pass.  Enter to win great prizes, meet fellow Aggies in Tooele County, and enjoy free Aggie ice cream.  For more information contact the USU Alumni Office at 800-291-2586.

Aggie Night at the Stingers
The new Wasatch Front Young Alumni Group invites all Utah State University young alumni to Aggie Night at the Stingers on Thursday, August 21, Franklin Covey Field,

Cache County Aggie Chapter
Support the Cache County Aggie Chapter Scholarship Fund while enjoying great food, music, door prizes, and hourly pinata busts at Cafe Sabor, 600 West Center, Logan.  The time is Monday, September 8, 5:30 to 10:00 p.m. on the Cafe Sabor patio (enter through the north gate).  The cost is $8 per person, $5 for children under 5.  Fajita bar includes chicken and beef with all the fixings, rice, beans, chips, salsa and drinks.

Las Vegas Review
Golfers enjoyed the recent Aggie Vegas Weekend with a golf tournament and dinner on July 26.  This inaugural event was very well attended and will now become an annual fundraiser open to Aggies everywhere.  Helping to raise thousands in scholarship dollars were Las Vegas Aggie Chapter Board members Al Faccinto, Jr., Neil Whitaker, and Paul Workman (shown below). 

Athletics

Football Reunion Utah State University's Athletics Department is hosting a 10-year reunion for the 1993 Las Vegas Bowl Championship team on September 26 & 27.  The weekend will commence on Friday, September 26, with a social at the Copper Mill restaurant beginning at 6:00 p.m. followed by a banquet at 7:00 p.m.  The weekend will feature former Aggie head football coach, Charlie Weatherbie, bringing his University of Louisiana-Monroe squad into Logan to face the Aggies at 6:00 p.m. in Romney Stadium.  Weatherbie was the Aggies' head coach during the 1993 season.  For more information on the 10-year reunion call (435) 797-1325.

Aggie Athletics Hires Joli Hatch
Utah State University recently announced the hiring of Joli Hatch as the new Director of Annual Giving for the athletics department.  In her new capacity, Hatch will assume the position of Executive Director over the Big Blue Club and oversee the fund drive, golf tournaments and special events.

A native of Vernal, Utah, Hatch arrived at USU from UNLV where she served as the Director of Development for Intercollegiate Athletics.  In addition, Hatch also was the Administrative Coordinator for the UNLV football program and was on the UNLV Athletic Hall of Fame Board.
