USU Alumni Spotlight - Diane M. Stuart According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Utah State alumna, Diane Stuart, has been named the Director of the Office on Violence Against Women.  Ms. Stuart was appointed by President Bush in 2001 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2003. As Director, Ms. Stuart serves as the Department of Justice liaison with Federal and State governments, as well as with international governments, on matters concerning violence against women.  She oversees an annual budget of almost $400 million, as well as the successful administration of ten discretionary grant programs and one formula grant program.  She works closely on policy issues with professional organizations, national associations, and other constituent groups that place emphasis on the crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.  Ms. Stuart is the founder and chair of the Federal Interagency Coordinating Board on Violence Against Women, which she created to enhance and facilitate coordination amongst Federal agencies on violence against women issues.  Ms. Stuart is a highly sought-after national speaker on domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking and has addressed numerous local, state, and national groups across the country and internationally. In addition to having served on numerous violence against women councils and organizations in Utah, she was the primary spokesperson for the leadership group of the National Advisory Council on Violence Against Women and also served on the Woman's Advisory Council for Senator Orrin G. Hatch.   Ms. Stuart has been a guest lecturer at the University of Utah at Salt Lake and an instructor at Utah State University. She served in executive advisory positions for the Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault and the Utah Domestic Violence Advisory Council. Ms. Stuart received her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and her Master of Science degree in family and human development from Utah State University.

 

Aggie Family Day
Aggie Family Day is a great time to visit Utah State University.  Whether you're interested in viewing the College of Science insect collection or learning hunter safety from the College of Natural Resources, this day will be fun and educational for the whole family.  USU's Wright Flyer, provided by the College of Engineering, is also scheduled to be on the Quad.  Join the Alumni Association on Saturday, September 27 th from 1:00 - 4:30 p.m. on the Quad at Utah State University. Lunch will be available for $1.00 per person and discounted tickets will be sold for $5.00 each to see the football Aggies take on the Indians of Louisiana-Monroe (game time is 6:00 p.m. ). Homecoming
The tradition of Homecoming continues at Utah State University this fall with the golf tournament, dance, parade and great Aggie football. Now Forever: Living the Aggie Tradition is this year's theme. Join us on Friday, October 10th for the golf tournament at Logan River Golf Course and the Homecoming Dance that evening in the Taggart Student Center. Saturday, October 11th begins with the parade at 10:00 a.m. on Main Street, the Alumni/Big Blue Club tailgate at 4:00 p.m., and Aggie football against the Wyoming Cowboys at 6:00 p.m. in Romney Stadium.  Call 1-800-291-2586 for more information on these exciting Homecoming activities and remember, wear your Aggie blue to the game!

NCAA Academic Achievement Award
Utah State University was awarded a $20,000 prize for NCAA Academic Achievement from USA Today.  Utah State ranked second in the nation in Division I-A for graduation rate increase, sixth for having a graduation rate above student body rate and twelfth in overall freshman athlete graduation rate.  Rankings are determined by federal graduation-rate forms used by schools in Divisions I and II.  The forms are for freshmen who entered in fall 1996 and had six years to graduate.  Each school offering athletic scholarships is required to complete these forms annually. In Division I, Ivy League schools and service academies are exempt because they don't offer athletic aid.  There are 325 Division I and 270 Division II schools. Division III schools cannot provide scholarships but were asked to voluntarily participate in this survey. ( USA Today, 09/02/03)

Salt Lake City Airport Billboards
Several images of Utah State's backlit dioramas are now being displayed in the concourses at Salt Lake City International Airport.  Along with this move, an all-new www.usu.edu is set to launch in the near future.  Both the billboards and the website are part of a comprehensive new marketing strategy created by the Utah State University Public Relations and Marketing Department.

Arizona Football Tailgate and Weekend September 12-14, 2003 Hundreds of Aggies will gather this weekend in Arizona to watch the USU football team match up with the Arizona State Sun Devils.  One travel group is being sponsored by Alumni Relations and includes round-trip airfare from Salt Lake City, two nights accommodations at the luxurious Tempe Mission Palms Hotel, a pre-game party and game tickets.  Those traveling on their own are invited to join other Aggies at the tailgate prior to the game on Saturday, September 13.  The pre-game party will be located at 60 East 5th Street, (Tempe Mission Palms Hotel) from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.  Great food, prizes, and entertainment will be available.  Luncheon only for adults is $10.  Children 12 and under are free.  Call 1-800-291-2586 to make your reservations today. Professor with a Love of Saint Bernards Ivan Palmblad, professor emeritus of biology (taught 1966-1997), has received the National Breeder Achievement Award from the Saint Bernard Club of America six of the nine years it has been awarded.  Since his kennels' first litter in 1972, 171 of the puppies produced there havewon top place at the National Specialty Show for Saint Bernards. Ten have received the honor so far this year. Dogs he has kept have won two national Best of Breed awards and two Opposite Sex Awards.

Athletics

Football Reunion Catch the 10-year reunion for the 1993 Las Vegas Bowl Championship team on September 26 & 27. The weekend will commence on Friday, September 26, with a social at the Copper Mill restaurant beginning at 6:00 p.m. followed by a banquet at 7:00 p.m. The weekend will feature former Aggie head football coach, Charlie Weatherbie, bringing his University of Louisiana-Monroe squad into Logan to face the Aggies at 6:00 p.m. in Romney Stadium. Volleyball Drops First Game of the Season Utah State's women's volleyball team lost its first match of the season to Montana State at the Mizuno/Holiday Inn Classic in Bozeman, Mont. on Saturday in five games.  Zuzana Cernianska tied her career-high in this game with 26 kills in the match.  The Aggies will now travel to Honolulu, Hawaii this weekend to participate in the 2003 Sprint Hawaii Invitational. USU will face #2 Hawaii on Fri., Sept. 12 at 10:30 p.m. (MST) and then meet either #4 Stanford or Weber State on Sat., Sept. 13.
