How to Obtain Permission by Format
To use copyrighted works in a classroom or publication, the status and ownership of the copyright must be determined. This will vary greatly depending on the format of the material and how the material is going to be used.
Books
Books require you to contact the publisher to ask permission to use the material. If the book has a creative comons license you need to understand what this licensing allows you to do.
Theses and Dissertations
At Utah State University, students are responsible for obtaining permission to use copyrighted works in their thesis or dissertation. The Graduate School requires a copy of permission to use copyrighted material be placed at the end of the work. Students retain the copyright of their work.
Articles
Articles require you to contact the publisher to ask permission to use the material. If the article has a creative commons license you need to understand what this licensing allows you to do.
