New Associate Vice President of Alumni |
Kimberly Larson joins USU Advancement as the Associate Vice President for Alumni Engagement and the Executive Director of the Utah State University Alumni Association.
Though an Ogden native, Kim spent many summers of her youth in Logan participating in the numerous camps sponsored by the university. “The camps,” she says, “were fantastic recruitment tools! By the time I turned 14, I knew I would be an Aggie.”
Now an alumna (2000) and long-time staff member, Kim is thrilled to help fellow Aggies engage and connect with the university and with one another. Join Kim and the alumni engagement team in sharing your unique Aggie experiences and talents as we serve and celebrate our Alma Mater. |

New Senior Director of Gift Planning |
Ben Stahmann brings a wealth of experience and financial wisdom to the Utah State University Advancement team. Originally from Orem, UT, Ben served most recently with LDS Philanthropies, and previously with Oklahoma State University, the Boy Scouts of America National Office, and as an attorney in private practice.
“You’re probably thinking, ‘Just what does a gift planner do?’ Put most simply, we help people who want to give creatively. We provide the guidance, care, and support to help you provide for yourself, your family, and your desires to improve the world. You may need to consider tax strategies, convert assets like land into income, use trusts and endowments, or involve family members in giving. We often work with a donor’s lawyer, accountant, and financial advisor to make sure the planned gift happens the way it’s intended and with the desired outcomes. I like to say that we help people do more than they think they can.” |
In coming editions, Ben will share insights about some great ways to support USU with less sacrifice than you’d probably anticipate. Meanwhile, if you’re curious, check out our gift planning website: http://usugiftlegacy.org. Happy holidays, and Go Aggies!

Giving Is Personal - Sheila Miller
|
Sheila is an extraordinary alumna and a passionate champion of all things Aggie. Her gift to the S.J. & Jessie E. Quinney College of Natural Resources gives talented students priceless field experience and research opportunities in the National Park Service. The gift honors Sheila’s husband, Joe, whose 40-year career mentored an entire generation of National Park Service leaders.
This year’s student recipient is Ethan Hammer, a junior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, majoring in Conservation and Restoration Ecology and Wildlife Ecology and Management. The USU intern monitors mammal populations and conducts wildflower research at Cedar Breaks National Monument—career opportunities made possible through Sheila’s generosity.
Thanks, Sheila, for continuing Joe’s legacy and showing us what giving to USU is all about!

Emeriti and the Chocolate Factory |
In November, the USU Emeriti Association eagerly answered an invitation to preview the new Aggie Chocolate Factory. Following a VIP tour, members learned about cacao cultivation and history from Silvana Martini, Professor of Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences and the 2017 Researcher of the Year at USU.
Of course, the group indulged in tasting and comparing chocolate made with cacao from different regions of the world and learned how farming and production techniques influence flavor profiles. The “bean-to-bar” factory specializes in hand-crafted chocolate from single-origin organic cacao. The Thistle and Rose bars make wonderful holiday gifts. Come taste for yourself.
The Emeriti Association meets regularly to share friendships, hear speakers, participate in events, raise scholarship funds for students, and so much more.

Football Watch Party |
Several hundred fans who couldn’t make it to Provo on October 5 gathered in downtown Logan to watch the game on a 70-foot outdoor screen. USU Alumni Association and Logan Downtown Alliance sponsored the event, and local vendors gave out great prizes and provided an array of delicious bites. Fans fought the chill playing games, gathering around fire pits, and wrapping themselves in the warm blanket of victory! Aggies 45, Cougars 20.

Aggie Jazz Night |
On November 7, more than 800 Aggies cheered Utah to its first home win of the season, a victory over the Dallas Mavericks at the first ever Jazz Aggie Night. USU Athletics and Alumni Association joined the Aggie faithful for pregame festivities in Vivint Arena’s Club South suite for pregame snacks and socializing, and fans filled courtside seats to watch the teams warm up. Feedback has been overwhelming (thank you!), and we look forward to making the event an annual Aggie tradition.
“We were thrilled to take our family to the game! Our three boys who are great Aggie fans are also such huge Jazz fans!” said alumna Carrie Godfrey. “Thanks, Utah State, for a wonderful Aggie Night with the Jazz!”
