Alumni Giving Story - J’Wayne McArthur
|
All J’Wayne McArthur ever wanted was to be a cowboy.
He arrived at Utah State University in 1956, a 20-year-old with a new spouse, the GI Bill, and a hard-earned share of western wisdom. Except for military service, J’Wayne’s life, including four intense years at a cattle ranch in Pinedale, Wyoming, had been experienced from the saddle.
“I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a horse…and a job to do. The move to Logan cost some real prospects at home. I wasn’t sure how I’d measure up in the city or the school.”
J’Wayne had always held education in high regard but wasn’t yet sure that a man of his means could afford the “opportunity” everyone’s always going on about. He decided to visit the College of Agriculture.

True Aggies - Diane & Steve Mothersell
|
“Diane & Steve are as True a Blue as Aggies get,” says Matt White, USU Vice President for Advancement, “Getting to know them has been a privilege, and it is an honor to call them friends.”
Longtime advisors to athletics and exemplary members of the Old Main Society, Diane and Steve have contributed to numerous initiatives at Utah State University, most memorably to the Jim and Carol Laub Athletics-Academics Complex—a world class facility that is home to the Steve C. Mothersell Sr. Athletics Hall of Honor.
Steve started at tight end for the ’73 and ’74 Aggies, the last squad before this year’s to beat BYU in back-to-back years! Steve’s service to the university includes the National Advisory Board for athletics and the Utah State University Foundation. In 2016, he was inducted into the Utah State Athletics Hall of Fame.

Aggie Mom |
Susan and Tiffany Lemon
|
|
Susan Lemon of Providence, Utah, never finished her education, but in many ways she is deserving of degrees in history, biology, economics, and education—just a few of the disciplines studied by her six children.
When she arrived at Utah State University in 1974, Susan had every intention of completing her education, but plans changed shortly after she met Lynn (’76). The couple married, and soon had their first child, Amy (Thatcher ’99). The financial toll of raising a young family and attending school was too great. Susan put her education on hold, shifted attention to her family, and took a part-time job to support Lynn’s education. When Lynn graduated, Susan received a “Ph.T.” (Putting Husband Through), an official award that the university bestowed at the time. She still has the university-issued certificate.

Welcome Nate Lundberg
|
Nate is a tremendous addition to the Alumni Engagement Team. His primary responsibilities include advising the Student Alumni Association, coordinating alumni lifetime membership, and leading freshman welcome events.
A Cache Valley native, Nate comes from a long, proud line of True Aggies. As a young boy in River Heights, he awoke each morning to spectacular Old Main just outside his bedroom window. He knew from an early age that he would take the Blue!
While a student, Nate spearheaded freshman orientations for the campus A-Team, and he served as mentoring director and marketing executive for the USU Student Alumni Association.
Nate graduated this spring with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and a minor in business.

Welcome Wayne Purcell
Development Officer, University Wide |
|
Wayne joins the USU Advancement Team following several years as national sales manager for ICON Health & Fitness and ZAGG International. His contagious joy and big heart have already made him an Advancement department favorite.
Wayne was born in the Samoan village of Malaela, but was raised and educated in Auckland, New Zealand. He loved his idyllic childhood and is thankful for good parents who were able to love, protect, and nourish five exceptional children.
“My parents did not allow self-pity or complaint, but rather taught us to express gratitude each day for our blessings. It was a great joy and privilege to grow up in a diverse, multicultural society. I love my Pacific Island culture and history, and I have a passion for the Polynesian people for whom humility, love, respect, and honor are natural expressions of our culture.”

Give Yourself a Gift
USU Planned Giving |
Last time, I wrote about linking an estate and financial plan review to some event on your calendar just to make sure it gets done, but suggested that birthdays and plan reviews were probably incompatible. I may have been wrong.
I love my mother-in-law for a lot of reasons, but one thing everybody loves about her is her approach to birthdays. See, if she knows you want something and it’s within her budget, not only will she make sure to give it to you, but she’ll tell you ahead of time that it’s coming!
Now, surprises are great, but Grandma’s strategy has increased our family’s enjoyment of her gift by letting us anticipate it, to get really excited that we know it’s coming. Because of the conversations, nobody feels entitled or wastes time wishing for a pony, either. I think it makes things easier for her, too, since those Amazon lists ensure she hits the birthday bullseye every time. It’s made her a very popular family member.

Aggie Tradition –
Mountain West Tournament |
For Aggie fans Nick Ballam (MIS ’07), Nick Hicks (HR ’05), and Jason Wright (“A”dopted), the journey to the Mountain West basketball tournament in Las Vegas is no lighthearted sporting excursion, no merry voyage to warmer climes for a bit of hoop between morning tee times and nightly seafood buffets. No.
It’s a pilgrimage.
“The trip isn’t life or death exactly. Let’s just call it…devotion,” says Ballam, who has observed the annual basketball rite since 1991. Nick and Jason, too, are tournament faithfuls and long-time Aggie devotees.
Several years ago, Ballam met Jason on USUFans.com and was inspired to formalize his obsession. He created USUStats.com shortly thereafter. Their shared enthusiasm for web design, USU sports, and Aggie basketball made for a fast friendship, and it wasn’t long before the two were carpooling to the conference basketball tournament with Jason’s cousin Nick in tow.
