Fellowships


The School of Graduate Studies offers 5 types of fellowships. Some fellowships have applications that are available online and others are awarded to students who have been nominated by someone from the college.

Departments and colleges often offer additional fellowships. Check with your department or college to see what fellowships it offers.

Presidential Fellowships

Award: Fifteen fellowships of $12,000 each are awarded for the academic year along with a tuition award for the non-resident portion of tuition

Criteria: A 3.5 GPA and quantitative and verbal GRE scores at the 70th percentile or above

Intended for outstanding incoming students; students are nominated by their college to receive this fellowship

Vice President for Research Fellowships

Award: Eleven $15,000 fellowships for the academic year and a tuition award for the non-resident portion of tuition

Criteria: A 3.5 GPA and quantitative and verbal GRE scores at the 70th percentile or above; the student must also be in a research degree program that includes a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation

Intended for incoming students; students are nominated by their college to receive this fellowship

Martin Luther King Fellowship

Award: One fellowship of $7,000 for the academic year

Criteria: A 3.0 GPA and GRE scores at the 40th percentile or higher; student must be accepted to a graduate program as a matriculated student, with matching departmental financial support (minimum $1,000)

Intended for deserving African American students; priority given to new students

Dr. Dinesh and Kalpana Patel Graduate Fellowships

Award: One award of $5,000 for the academic year

Intended for underrepresented and international doctoral students

The School of Graduate Studies Dissertation Fellowship

Download Application - Deadline: April 1

Award: Several fellowships of $5,000 for the academic year; non-renewable

Criteria: Submission of curriculum vita, a letter from the department head or the department's director of graduate studies that endorses the student's application and that describes the department's commitment to relieve the student of some portion of the student's responsibilities as a graduate assistant; the letter should be addressed to the Dissertation Fellowship Selection Committee

Intended to provide outstanding doctoral students with additional time to draft and revise dissertations; it should be used to relieve students from some part of their teaching or research obligations in order to pursue more actively the actual writing of the dissertation
