COBRA

What is COBRA?

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) gives workers and their families who lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits provided by their group health plan for limited periods of time under certain circumstances such as voluntary or involuntary job loss, reduction in the hours worked, transition between jobs, death, divorce, and other life events.

More information and alternatives to COBRA can be found on The Department of Labor Website and in the USU Summary Plan Description (see page 144 to learn about COBRA Coverage at USU).

How does COBRA work?

If you choose to enroll in COBRA, your COBRA coverage will be effective immediately after your USU Health Insurance ended. There will not be a break in coverage. The insurance will be the same coverage you were used to as an employee; however, the premiums will be higher. Premium information will be provided in the letter from ASI Cobra.

How do I enroll?

When your termination date is officially in the USU Banner system (done by your department submitting an EPAF), WEX COBRA will then mail to your home address the enrollment packet and premium information. You have 60 days to return the enrollment forms.
