All Invited to USU Wildflower Walk June 5 in Green Canyon
All wildflower enthusiasts are invited to participate in the annual Richard J. Shaw Memorial Wildflower Walk Tuesday, June 5, 2018, in the hills of North Logan’s Green Canyon. Utah State University’s Intermountain Herbarium hosts the activity, which begins at 6:30 p.m. and is free of charge.
Intermountain Herbarium botanist Michael Piep will lead the walk and discuss flowers and plants along the trip. Participants should gather at the parking area of the Green Canyon trailhead. To access the site, follow 1900 North (also known as Green Canyon Drive) east through North Logan. Take the left fork and proceed to the parking area with portable restroom facilities.
Conducted at a leisurely pace, the walk will last about 90 minutes. Participants should bring water and wear comfortable walking shoes. (The trail is not recommended for child strollers.)
For more information, visit the USU College of Science’s Facebook page.
The annual walk honors the memory of Shaw, an Aggie alum who served on USU’s faculty from 1957 to 1987. He also served as the herbarium’s director from 1984-87 and authored Utah Wildflowers: A Field Guide to the Northern and Central Mountains and Valleys. Shaw, who conducted wildflower walks following his retirement from USU, enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors and knowledge of local flora with others.
