Tonya Jewell, Utah State University advisor in the Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education Department from the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services, was named 2019 Outstanding Advising Award Winner in the Academic Advising—Primary Role category of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) 2019 Global Awards Program for Academic Advising.

This award is in recognition of Jewell’s demonstrated abilities as an advisor in an international competition, such as having a sustained institutional impact on students. Jewell is a leader on campus and has actively participated in development activities related to the growth of her skills to the highest level. Jewell will be honored and presented with this award in Louisville, KY during the NACADA Annual Conference in October 2019.

“The best part of being an academic advisor is celebrating personal relationships based on valuing each student individually,” said Jewell. “As an academic advisor, my goal is to co-create a navigational plan, a wayfinding map of sorts with students as they steer through academic pursuits, explore learning opportunities and expand thinking.”

Leslie Buxton, an advisor in the College of Engineering, was awarded a National Certificate of Merit by NACADA. Buxton is recognized for her excellence in professional practices, documented advisor development and student support.

Jewell and Buxton received awards in advising for their excellence at the regional and university levels. They swept NACADA Region 10 awards, taking home the Professional and New Advisor of the Year awards in spring 2019. Jewell and Buxton were previously awarded USU Professional and New Advisors, respectively, in spring 2018.

“I feel I’ve been given numerous opportunities to learn about current policies and student theories and issues through USU advising forum and meetings,” said Buxton. “There are advising committees and communities that I can join, and I have a lot of support to attend national and state advising conferences to learn more and network with fellow advisors.”

NACADA’s membership has grown to over 14,000 faculty, professional advisors, administrators, counselors, and others in academic and student affairs staff concerned with the intellectual, personal, and vocational needs of students. The organization acts as the representative and advocate of academic advising, and those providing that service, to higher education.
