Black Box Theatre Features 'Talking Pictures'

Talking Pictures will open at Utah State University’s Black Box Theatre (FAC 224) April 15 at 7:30 p.m. The play continues its run April 16, 17, 18 and 19 at 7:30 with an additional matinee performance Saturday, April 19, at 2 p.m.

“I was very excited to learn that this was the show I would be directing,” said Richie Call, assistant professor of theater in the Caine College of the Arts and the play’s director. “I love the play, and I love Horton Foote’s work.”

Talking Pictures, written by Horton Foote, is about a young woman named Myra Tolliver who makes her living by playing live music for the silent pictures. She makes barely enough to survive, caring for herself and her teenage son, Pete. “Talkies” are about to take over the town’s picture show venue and Tolliver won’t be needed anymore, so she’s willing to do almost anything to make ends meet.

Meanwhile, Pete’s father, Gerard, is trying to lure him away from Myra to live with him with a promise of a better life. Throughout the play, Tolliver is courted by Willis, a local bricklayer who proposes to her. When she accepts, Pete decides to go live with his father, who rescinds his invitation because he has remarried. Through the drama, Myra and Willis create a new life for themselves and what will be a new era.

“This is a beautiful story about the everyday triumphs, struggles and trials that all people go through,” said Call. “I suppose what appeals to me the most about the play is that it’s a love story for just about everyone in the play.”

Tickets for Talking Pictures are $13 adults, $10 seniors and youth, $8 USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID.
