Future Aggie Named Utah Gatorade Player Of The Year In Girls Basketball

March 23, 2005

LOGAN, Utah - Future Utah State women’s basketball player Lindsey Freeze was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Girls Basketball for 2005 in the state of Utah, it was announced recently. The award is given to those who succeed on and off the court.

“This is a great honor for Lindsey,” said Utah State University head coach Raegan Pebley. “We are excited to have her bring that same dedication and intensity to Utah State next year.”

Freeze, a 6-0 forward from Timpview High School in Provo, Utah, helped lead the T-Birds to a second-place finish in the 4A state tournament this past season as she led her team, and was second in the state, averaging 19.6 points per game. Her 491 points last season were a single-season record at Timpview as she moved into second place on the T-Birds’ all-time scoring list with 1,122 points.

A two year captain at Timpview, Freeze was named first team all-state by both the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune as she scored 32 points, including seven three-pointers in the T-Birds’ win against rival Provo. She also hit four shots from beyond the arc en route to 22 points as Timpview upset national power Mountain View in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.

Along with basketball, Freeze also participates in soccer, cross country and track. This spring she will graduate with 15 varsity letters, a Timpview record.

The Gatorade Company presented its first national High School Player of the Year award nearly two decades ago. The honor went to and outstanding football player from Indianapolis, former NFL quarterback Jeff George. Since then more than 7,000 state winners and 140 national winners have been inducted into the Gatorade Circle of Champions. The list includes many of today’s top professional athletes. Foremost among them are Jason Kidd, Marion Jones, Vince Carter, Alex Rodriquez, Chamique Holesclaw and Lisa Leslie. From the pool of state winners in basketball, one will be named Gatorade national Player of the Year.

Utah State University Gymnastics to Compete in WGC Championships Friday

The Aggies are currently in first place in the Western Gymnastics Conference.

March 23, 2005

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State gymnastics (5-8, 3-1) heads to the Western Gymnastics Conference Championships to face Boise State (5-13, 1-3), Cal State Fullerton (5-14, 0-2) and Southern Utah (7-7, 3-1), Friday, March 25, at 8 p.m. MST. The 16th ranked Aggies are 2-0 against the Broncos and 1-1 against the 17th ranked Thunderbirds this year. USU has not faced CS Fullerton this season.

Utah State has faced two of the three other members of the WGC this season. After losing their first meet against Southern Utah, the Aggies won three straight with two over Boise State and one over Southern Utah. Since the conception of the WGC in 2002, the Aggies have never won the conference title. The Aggies last conference championship was in the Big West in 2001.

Katie Rutherford (bars) is the only current Aggie that has won a conference title. Utah State  does return seven all-WGC members: Katie Rutherford, Meagan Nelson, Jessica Parenti, Rachel Ropelato (2), Ashley Barr, Liesel Kohler, Rachael Mandy and Alex Martin. Utah State has been unable to qualify for Regionals since the first year of the WGC in 2002. Currently it is in position to receive an automatic bid.

Southern Utah has led the WGC most of the season until USU took the first place standing two weeks ago. After a couple of tough weeks, SUU has come back in a big way to be ranked 17th, one spot behind the Aggies. After a slow start, Boise State is hitting its stride and the defending champion continues to climb in the rankings. Though CS Fullerton has had a tough season, they have stayed close to a lot of good teams. SUU and USU will not only be competing against each other for the conference championship, but will both try to get a good enough score to solidify their places in the Regional Championships.

Utah State next waits to find out if it qualified for the Regional Championships. If it does, and finishes in the top-18, it will compete in any of six sites around the country on Saturday, April 9. If the Aggies qualify but are not in the top-18, they will compete at the University of Utah at 6 p.m. on April 9.
