Photo Guild presents '101 Views of Scotland'

Students from USU’s Department of Art had the opportunity to study at a variety of international locations during the summer of 2007. For graphic designers and painters, Switzerland and Germany were destinations. Photographers were drawn to Scotland.

One of the results of that trip is “101 Views of Scotland,” an exhibit of photographs taken by students who participated in the USU Scotland Study Abroad Program. The exhibit is presented by members of the USU Photo Guild. The exhibit runs Oct. 23-Nov. 2 in the Twain Tippetts Gallery of the Chase Fine Arts Center, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A formal reception is Friday, Oct. 26, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and all are invited. The opening features a Scottish piper and authentic Scottish appetizers.

The gallery will feature works by 18 students and faculty. Subjects highlight experiences and scenery from the five-week intensive course. Prints will be gelatin silver, digital pigment and chromogenic color, in addition to several 19th century printing processes.

“Everyone who travels abroad takes pictures,” says Craig Law, program director and professor of photography at USU. “Our students not only created a memory, they captured the essence of Scotland. This was the first of what we hope to be many more opportunities to study photography abroad.”

The experience included an extended stay at Hospitalfield, an art foundation residence in Arbroath, Scotland. Hospitalfield was founded in 1100 AD by monks as a functioning hospital. More than 100 years ago it was set aside as an art trust to house an extensive art collection and provide residency experiences for artists.

“Living at Hospitalfield was like traveling back to a 17th century castle with all the conveniences of modern technology, including our own stairway wireless Internet café,” says Jenny Riley, a student from the program. “The red carpet was literally rolled out for us. I felt like royalty.”

Students also took advantage of the proximity to other countries and extended their visit. Students also visited Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands and parts of England. Selected prints from these countries will be included in the exhibit.
