When Women Don’t Speak: What It Takes for Women To be Heard
Panel Discussion/Presentation
The Utah Women & Leadership Project invites you to join us for our third Spring Women’s Leadership Forum.
Drs. Jessica Preece and Christopher Karpowitz will present their groundbreaking research that shows what it takes for a woman to truly be heard. After years spent analyzing lab and real-life settings to determine what it takes for a woman to truly be perceived as competent and influential, they discovered that for women, having a seat at the table does not mean having a voice. They will discuss their research that has found that women are systematically seen as less authoritative and that their influence is systematically lower. And when they speak up, they are interrupted and not listened to as much.
So, what can be done? This engaging presentation will provide tips and strategies that can help all women understand what it takes for women to be heard and viewed as influential. Women of all ages (and those who influence them) are welcome to listen, learn, and ask questions in the chat! Register now!

All Things Considered: USU Senior BFA Show
Arts/Entertainment
Twenty Senior Bachelor of Fine Arts students have been hard at work preparing for their undergraduate capstone show. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, students have been preparing artworks to share. In response to the trials and tribulations they, and all of us, have faced during the last year the show has been aptly named: All Things Considered. For this show, nearly two-dozen students from various artistic disciplines are combining their efforts and talents for a single exhibit. This show will showcase the skills and concepts the graduating B.F.A. students have been developing during their time as undergraduate students. Art and Design students begin their journeys with their foundations classes where they attempt to master the basics of two- and three-dimensional art. During that same time, students are preparing to enter their desired emphasis. Once they have been selected for these competitive programs, students have two years to explore and develop skills in their chosen disciplines. All Things Considered will highlight the respective creative-research and development of the graduating Art and Design seniors.

A Research-Based Approach for Improving Precalculus Teaching and Learning
By Dr. Marilyn Carlson
Arizona State University School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences
Abstract: The function concept is a central idea of precalculus and beginning calculus and is used for modeling in the sciences and engineering, yet many students complete courses in precalculus and calculus with weak understandings of this concept. Students who are unable to construct meaningful function formulas to relate two varying quantities have little chance of responding to novel applied problems, or understanding key ideas of calculus such as derivative, accumulation and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. I will share data that reveals how students might construct these and other critical reasoning abilities and understandings for learning calculus. I will share the research developed Pathways Precalculus student materials and teacher resources that provide the context for this research, and are resulting in large gains in student learning of the function concept and other foundational ideas for learning calculus..

The World's Principled Leaders Series: Ward Clapham
Panel Discussion/Presentation | Focused Friday
When Ward Clapham took command of the third-largest Royal Police force in Canada, the organization ran like most bureaucracies—heavy command-and-control management and strict adherence to the status quo. But Clapham didn’t believe in staying in the box. Today he challenges the way work is traditionally done and inspires leaders to rethink the way they manage people and unleash hidden talent.

Jazz Clinic with Melissa Aldana
Arts/Entertainment
On her first jazz quartet "Visions", award-winning saxophonist Melissa Aldana connects her work to the legacy of Latina artists who have come before her, creating a pathway for her own expression. Inspired by the life and works of Frida Kahlo, Aldana creates a parallel between her experiences as a female saxophone player in a male-dominated community, and Kahlo’s experiences as a female visual artist working to assert herself in a landscape dominated by men. On her first jazz quartet recording, Aldana adds a new dimension to her sound, resulting in a transformative movement of expression and self-identity.
Aldana was born in Santiago, Chile. She began playing the saxophone when she was six, under the influence and tuition of her father Marcos Aldana, also a professional saxophonist. Aldana began with alto, influenced by artists such as Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, and Michael Brecker. However, upon first hearing the music of Sonny Rollins, she switched to tenor; the first tenor saxophone she used was a Selmer Mark VI that had belonged to her grandfather.
