Ute Ladies’ Tresses Orchid Monitoring
Special Event
Bear River Land Conservancy is seeking community volunteers of all ages that want to help us conduct our annual monitoring of Ute Ladies’ Tresses. Monitoring events will occur on Friday evenings beginning July 28th through early September. Each Friday, we will meet at 6 p.m. at ~5400 W, 1800 S in Mendon. Please wear long sleeve shirts, pants, and sturdy shoes. Ute Ladies’ Tresses are a threatened perennial flowering orchid found in open wetland and riparian micro-habitats, are mostly pollinated by bumblebees, and are dependent on mycorrhizal fungi. As part of our efforts to manage Mendon Meadows Preserve and to protect this rare orchid, Bear River Land Conservancy conducts annual monitoring and established a pollinator garden in 2022. There will be lots of fun, food and friends! All WATS students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to come and compete or spectate! Please let us know if you'll be able to make it and whether you'd like to compete using the linked Google Form by August 29th. Categories and Prizes When you sign up to compete, you'll be required to pick one of three categories: Breakfast, Dinner, or Dessert. We'll be dishing out sweet prizes for best camp cooking creation in each category: - Highest percentage of locally sourced ingredients (garden, farmer's market, or gleaned from around town) - Best presentation (get creative!) - Faculty's choice - Most environmentally friendly - Spectating If you don't want to cook, please still come to eat tasty meals and vote on the prizes! This exhibit explores the cultural impact Andrew Carnegie’s Diplodocus skeleton had on a global scale. A complete media sensation, casts of this animal can be found in some of the preeminent museums across the world including the French National Museum of Natural History, the Zoological Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. Walk through the bones of the last original cast of Dippy while learning about its impact on science in the media, animation, and even world peace.

September 24 is National Punctuation Day. While punctuation may be viewed as a set of rigid grammar rules, the history of these symbols is fascinating, which was discovered by the students enrolled in Professor Joyce Kinkead’s History of Writing classes. Each student adopted a punctuation mark and then researched its origins. These histories are depicted graphically in colorful posters designed by Molly Etchberger, a graduate of Art and Design. The posters are on display in the Merrill-Cazier Library on the lower floor near Special Collections, September 11-October 9. A public reception with refreshments will be hosted by the Department of English on site on Friday, September 22 at noon.

Designing for Multispecies Justice About The Lecture: Multispecies justice is an emerging framework that recognizes the relationship between human and more-than-human oppression and seeks solutions that simultaneously achieve social and ecological justice. As shapers of the environment, landscape architects have the opportunity to consider how design and planning decisions promote or inhibit multispecies justice. Kirsten will combine her experiences as a former landscape architect with her current interest in multispecies justice to discuss ways in which this framework can deepen the work of landscape architects.

History of Punctuation Poster Exhibition Celebrating National Punctuation Day

September 24 is National Punctuation Day. While punctuation may be viewed as a set of rigid grammar rules, the history of these symbols is fascinating, which was discovered by the students enrolled in Professor Joyce Kinkead’s History of Writing classes. Each student adopted a punctuation mark and then researched its origins. These histories are depicted graphically in colorful posters designed by Molly Etchberger, a graduate of Art and Design. The posters are on display in the Merrill-Cazier Library on the lower floor near Special Collections, September 11-October 9. A public reception with refreshments will be hosted by the Department of English on site on Friday, September 22 at noon.

A Bolder Way Forward for Utah
Panel Discussion/Presentation
National and statewide studies continue to show that women and girls in Utah are not thriving in critical areas. Year after year, Utah continues to have high levels of domestic violence, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, and gender-based discrimination, while also ranking as the worst state for women’s equality and having low levels of women’s leadership representation in nearly all domains, including politics and business. Although the needle has moved slightly in a few areas, with its current trajectory it will take two, three, or even four decades to make notable progress. It is time for Utah to embrace A Bolder Way Forward (BWF). When we lift Utah girls and women, we lift all Utahns!
The BWF is framed around systems thinking, which is that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” In Utah, we have been working on related efforts for too long using the “parts” strategy; we need to shift and move together as a system. If we are serious about ensuring that Utah women and girls thrive, we need to create change by 2030, with a check point in 2026. Dr. Susan Madsen will give an overview of the BWF and then be joined by Nubia Peña and Jennifer Smith for further discussion about the BWF.

The Principles in Practice Workshop Series hosted by the Covey Leadership Center features world-class leaders in a variety of industries. Students have an opportunity to learn through a lecture-style setting, followed by a Q&A. Our first speaker will be Miha Stan. Miha is Assistant Professor of Strategy at the UCL School of Management and her current research focuses on the links between formal structures, organizational learning, and adaptation. More broadly, she is interested in understanding how attributes of the organizational context shape learning outcomes, with an emphasis on the healthcare sector. Prior to joining UCL, Mihaela pursued a Ph.D. in Strategic and International Management from the London Business School and an MBA from Brigham Young University in United States.

A Collective Approach Workshop: Dr. Chris Linder
Workshop/Training
As attention to campus sexual violence has grown in recent years, educators and staff have been pressured to respond quickly to comply with campus, local and federal policies. This pressure has resulted in a hyper-focus on compliance and response — after sexual violence happens, rather than working to prevent it from happening in the first place. Educators also may feel pressure to use a one-size fits all, “best practices” approach rather than developing their own, context-specific strategies. In this workshop, Chris talks about moving beyond the “expert model” to engage all members of the campus community who have an interest in addressing relationship and sexual violence. Participants will leave this workshop with several specific strategies they can use to immediately address campus sexual violence and an action plan for developing educational programming for the campus community. Dr. Chris Linder (she/her/hers) is the director of the McCluskey Center for Violence Prevention, which engages in research and education, at the University of Utah. She also is an associate professor of higher education; her scholarship focuses on sexual violence prevention and student activism.

Under the Influence Speaker Bio: Michael Budge brings over 15 years of innovative site design to his practice in Salt Lake City. Known for a unique synthesis of conceptual rigor, technical know-how and an unsurpassed attention to detail, his designs extract influences from the site and surrounding context to create outdoor spaces with a simple and clear aesthetic, that have won recognition on both the local and national stage. In 2014 he co-founded LOCI, an award-winning Landscape Architecture, Land Planning, Urban design firm that tackles a wide range of project types and scales—from urban design, resorts, institutions, parks and open space, neighborhood and community planning, mixed-use development and private residences. This diverse range of projects has taken their work into over 38 different countries and 6 different continents.

Over the course of three sessions, participants will learn how to set up a welder for GMAW/FCAW, apply basic troubleshooting techniques, use basic shop tools and machinery, and will be introduced to entry-level fabrication techniques. Students will complete a small project by the end of the course to take home with them.

It’s nearly time for Aggie football and the annual Utah Agricultural Products Barbecue, hosted by Utah State University’s College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (CASS). Start time for the barbecue is tied to the USU vs. James Madison football game kick-off time. The BBQ will get underway 3 hours prior to kick-off (time to be determined). The barbecue will feature Utah-grown beef, dairy products, pork, onion rings, salad, lamb, corn, apples, Creamies and more. The event is sponsored by Utah’s Own. A collaboration among participating commodity groups, companies, and CAAS, volunteers from commodity groups and the college prepare and serve the meal in an outdoor festival atmosphere where guests can try all sorts of delicious food. The event has become a beloved fall tradition at USU. All proceeds, including your donation, go to the Utah Agricultural Leadership Endowment at USU to help provide scholarships for future generations of Utah’s farmers, ranchers, and agribusiness people.

In February 2012, five young women walked into the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow to protest the illegal presidential election in Russia. The young activists, who called themselves Pussy Riot, offered up a 48-second punk prayer, shouting, “Virgin Mary, chase Putin away!” before being dragged out of the church by security. After uploading a video of the performance onto YouTube, the women of Pussy Riot were arrested as enemies of church and state. But when Western media reclaimed the story, Pussy Riot’s protest became the greatest piece of performance art in Russian history. This is their story.

September 24 is National Punctuation Day. While punctuation may be viewed as a set of rigid grammar rules, the history of these symbols is fascinating, which was discovered by the students enrolled in Professor Joyce Kinkead’s History of Writing classes. Each student adopted a punctuation mark and then researched its origins. These histories are depicted graphically in colorful posters designed by Molly Etchberger, a graduate of Art and Design. The posters are on display in the Merrill-Cazier Library on the lower floor near Special Collections, September 11-October 9. A public reception with refreshments will be hosted by the Department of English on site on Friday, September 22 at noon.

Instructors: Dr. Nick Bouwes, Nate Norman & Becky Yeager Dates: September 26-28, 2023 Description: This course is designed for individuals and groups who are interested in live trapping and relocating beaver for stream restoration. Students will gain: 1. Ability to work with landowners in protecting their property while living with beavers when possible. 2. Knowledge of types of beaver traps and how to properly set them. 3. Knowledge of how to safely transport beaver. 4. Ability to handle beavers to collect and record pertinent data after captures. 5. Knowledge of important components for temporary beaver husbandry. 6. Ability to select proper relocation areas for release. Learn how to prepare relocation areas to increase success

Students will complete a small project by the end of the course to take home with them.

The young activists, who called themselves Pussy Riot, offered up a 48-second punk prayer, shouting, “Virgin Mary, chase Putin away!” before being dragged out of the church by security. After uploading a video of the performance onto YouTube, the women of Pussy Riot were arrested as enemies of church and state. But when Western media reclaimed the story, Pussy Riot’s protest became the greatest piece of performance art in Russian history. This is their story.

"An Evening of French Flute Sonatas featuring Dr. Jeiran Hasan on flute, with guest artists Chilali Hugo (harp) and Dr. Jessica Roderer Gibbons of BYU - Idaho (piano). Repertoire includes compositions by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges for flute and harp, the first classical composer of African descent; Louise-Marie Simon, a prolific female composer writing under the pen name of Claude Arrieu; Darius Milhaud, one of the most recognized composers of the Les Six; and the infamous Cesar Franck, in a transcription of his tremendous Violin Sonata.
