Hybrid Applied Mathematics Seminar
Conference/Seminar
Talk Title: Solving Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Problems with Reduced Order Models and Neural Networks
Speaker: Dr. Zilong Song Department of Math & Stat, USU
Abstract: The friction stir welding process can be modelled using a system of heat transfer and Navier-Stokes equations with a shear dependent viscosity. Finding numerical solutions of this system of nonlinear partial differential equations over a set of parameter space, however, is extremely time-consuming. Therefore, it is desirable to find a computationally efficient method that can be used to obtain an approximation of the solution with acceptable accuracy. In this talk, we present a reduced basis method for solving the parametrized coupled system of heat and Navier-Stokes equations using a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). In addition, we apply a machine learning algorithm based on an artificial neural network (ANN) to learn (approximately) the relationship between relevant parameters and the POD coefficients. Our computational experiments demonstrate that substantial speed-up can be achieved while maintaining reasonable accuracy.

Recreation
FREE REGISTRATION: https://bit.ly/mindfulnessandmeditationweekly
Mindfulness is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress. Mindfulness meditation has been proven to support various health conditions - stress, anxiety, pain, depression, insomnia, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, and more - and help you experience thoughts and emotions with greater balance and acceptance, improve attentiveness, and relieve burnout.
Practicing self care through mindfulness and meditation can help you relax and focus on what is most important - your overall wellness. This is a weekly, online wellness series hosted by the Utah State University Office of Health Equity and Community Engagement and Tribal & Rural Opioid Initiative Resource Center.

Investigations of Turbulent Multiphase Flows Using Optical Measurement Techniques
Conference/Seminar
Small inertial particles in turbulence appear in a number of environmental flows such as dust, sand, rain, snow or sediment in the atmospheric boundary layer, in rivers, during deep-sea mining or on Mars. Particle dynamics, including accelerations and concentrations, depend (among other things) on gravity and inertia. In this talk I will present results of recent high-Reynolds-number experiments of inertial particles in turbulence which are performed in a turbulence box (Re? = 450) and an atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel (Ret = 19,000). These results are of direct use in prediction and modeling of phenomena such as droplet growth in clouds, fall speed of snowflakes and particle concentrations in dust storms.
