Earthquake Engineering with Dr. Brady Cox

Lecture/Readings

Dr. Brady Cox is a professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Utah State University. He specializes in earthquake engineering and has been a part of earthquake reconnaissance teams deployed around the world to study large and damaging earthquakes. He will discuss how studying at USU launched his earthquake engineering career and ultimately led to him to the White House where he received an award from the President of the United States. Food will be provided at this event.

This week’s speaker is Andrew Daines, who in 2019 Andrew launched Chassie, which designs, makes, and sells artistic furniture out of an 8,000 sq. ft. facility in the Bronx. As the world of work evolves, Chassie focuses on home and office desks that meet the new needs of a flexible workforce. After just two years Chassie has designed and built its unique style of furniture for hundreds of consumers and companies from Adobe to Warby Parker to Google.

When his brother Jon handed operations of Kodiak Cakes over to him in 1997, Joel was a 23-year-old economics major attending the University of Utah. During her time in law school, Savanna has interned for the National Network to End Domestic Violence, externed for the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (the public defender’s office), and worked as a summer associate for Bailey & Glasser LLP, a mid-sized firm in D.C., where she focused on consumer litigation. Savanna has also served as both author and editor for the Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law and currently works as a student attorney for the Criminal Defense and Prisoner Advocacy Clinic.

The Rotaract Club of USU is hosting a live music and an art gallery charity event showcasing emerging, local Utah artists! Tickets are $1 per guest. This week’s speaker is Adam Morgan, who is an Executive Creative Director at Adobe with 26 years of experience in creativity, strategy, and storytelling. In 2020, AdWeek named him one of the “Creative 100”—the top inspiring creative minds in marketing, media, and culture—in the world. Before Adobe, Adam was a creative director at several international ad agencies, delivering award-winning advertising campaigns. He was named a 40 under 40 Business Leader by Utah Business Magazine and Utah Ad Professional of the Year in 2014. He’s one of the few creative leaders to have a master’s degree in marketing strategy from Northwestern.

Dawn Patrol Beginner Backcountry Ski Tour

Workshop/Training

Come grab some backcountry turns with us! We will venture into the backcountry to seek out snow that you can't get to on a ski lift. Learn some of the basics of backcountry travel and safety. No backcountry experience is required but you must be comfortable riding double blue to black diamond resort terrain. Participants must be prepared for strenuous hiking. Backcountry touring skis or splitboard with skins are required and available to rent for an additional $10+tax for trip participants. NO SNOWSHOES. Trip cost includes transportation, avalanche beacon, shovel, probe, and student leadership. All participants must be fully vaccinated, have health insurance, and abide by OP and University Policies.

Mindfulness Meditation | Sitting in breath and presence

FREE REGISTRATION: https://bit.ly/mindfulnessandmeditationweekly Mindfulness is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress. Mindfulness meditation has been proven to support various health conditions - stress, anxiety, pain, depression, insomnia, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, and more - and help you experience thoughts and emotions with greater balance and acceptance, improve attentiveness, and relieve burnout. Practicing self care through mindfulness and meditation can help you relax and focus on what is most important - your overall wellness. This is a weekly, online wellness series hosted by the Utah State University Office of Health Equity and Community Engagement and Tribal & Rural Opioid Initiative Resource Center.

CIDI Workshop - Exam Security in Canvas Without Proctorio

If you want to run a secure exam without using Proctorio, your options are to use a testing center or design your exam in a way that removes the benefits of trying to cheat. This can take some extra work and creativity but often results in better exams overall. We'll discuss question design, timing, question banks, and the way the USU testing center network works.

Entrepreneur Leadership Series: Mark and Spencer Young

This week’s speakers are Mark Young and Speaker Young.

Mark Young spent 30 years owning and operating McDonald’s restaurants as a franchisee. During this time, he owned 6 of the highest volume McDonald’s in the western region, including the Park City McDonald’s featured on the Jay Leno show during the SLC 2002 Winter Olympics.

Spencer Young, son of Mark and Sue Young, grew up working in his father’s McDonald's. After graduating with a business degree from Dixie State University where he played football, Spencer found the Culver’s brand and fell in love. In 2015, Spencer opened the Orem, UT Culver’s, and a few years later followed with the St. George, UT and Logan, UT Culver’s.

Dawn Patrol Beginner Backcountry Ski Tour

Recreation

Come grab some backcountry turns with us! We will venture into the backcountry to seek out snow that you can't get to on a ski lift. Learn some of the basics of backcountry travel and safety. No backcountry experience is required but you must be comfortable riding double blue to black diamond resort terrain. Participants must be prepared for strenuous hiking. Backcountry touring skis or splitboard with skins are required and available to rent for an additional $10+tax for trip participants. NO SNOWSHOES. Trip cost includes transportation, avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and student leadership. All participants must be fully vaccinated, have health insurance and abide by OP and University Policies.

USU HELPS: Helping Everyone Learn how to Prevent Suicide (for faculty, staff, administrators)

This training is for USU faculty, staff, and administrators who want to assist students in distress by reaching out and connecting them to right resources. (There is a separate training for students to help their friends). The training will cover signs of psychological distress, warning signs of suicide, review of available mental health resources, and ways to reach out. In harmony with this mission, the Mountain West Economic History Conference is a venue for promoting and improving research in economic history. Instead of targeting a particular theme or historical period, the program committee seeks papers from faculty and graduate students on a wide variety of topics, time periods, and countries. Each presenter will be given 40-45 minutes followed by a 15-minute break, an atmosphere where presenters are able to receive in-depth peer feedback while also permitting all participants to have extensive interactions with attendees. American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers and First Aid

Recreation

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers and First Aid course is to instruct those who have a duty to act (professional rescuers) in the knowledge and skills needed to respond appropriately to first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies. This includes the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to care for a victim experiencing cardiac arrest. Register at recportal.usu.edu.
