Communitas - David Benjamin Sherry
Arts/Entertainment
David Benjamin Sherry is an artist working to challenge and reinvigorate the American Western landscape tradition by examining our complex interconnection with the natural world, with an emphasis on queer identity, color, and magic. Sherry’s work aims to celebrate the beauty of the American landscape and engage with the fraught history of the West, with its glorified legend of freedom fabricated from stolen lands, which continue to be threatened today. Through the media of analog film photography and painting, his vibrant, large-scale and often monochrome works present a new perspective on the subject. Sherry states that “color is a conduit for me to convey and promote an emotional resonance for the landscape, while weaving in my sense of otherness as a queer person, and to symbolically represent those who have been inaccurately left out of the American West’s mythical narrative of rugged (straight, white, male) individualism.”
Sherry was born in Stony Brook, New York, and lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He received his BFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003 and his MFA in photography from Yale University in 2007, where he was awarded the Richard Dixon Welling Prize. In 2010, he received the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Visual Arts Grant. A multi-part installation of his work was exhibited in Greater New York 2010 at MoMA PS1, New York. Sherry taught Western landscape and large-format photography as a distinguished faculty member at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2018. Utah Symphony: Brahms' Violin Concerto in Logan
Arts/Entertainment
The Caine College of the Arts is thrilled to present the Utah Symphony for a special one-night-only performance, bringing world-class artistry to Logan right here in the heart of our campus. Enjoy an unforgettable evening of breathtaking live music with this unique opportunity—free for all USU students, faculty, and staff, and only $10 for the general public.
Don’t miss this chance to experience the symphonic beauty of the Utah Symphony, exclusively brought to you by the Caine College of the Arts!
EVENT OVERVIEW:
The breathtaking Brahms Violin Concerto showcases the full range of the violin, from tender lyricism to exhilarating virtuosity. Augustin Hadelich, regarded as one of today’s top violinists, brings detailed nuance to this work, and highly sought-after conductor Elim Chan leads the intricate interplay between soloist and orchestra.
Immerse yourself in the dreamlike melodies of Ogonek’s Moondog, representing the silver halo around the moon, and embrace the rich tapestry of Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, the last work he ever composed. Hear echoes of Rachmaninoff’s past compositions, woven into the fabric of the music like hidden gems. These nostalgic references add to the depth, inviting you to uncover the composer’s musical legacy with each passing phrase.
Visit the URL below for more information about the event, music, and tickets!
(The USU community can redeem their complimentary tickets at the CCA Box Office in the Daryl Chase Fine Arts Center.)
MUSES
Arts/Entertainment
The word "muse" describes a source of inspiration. This annual music therapy concert aims to highlight the multi-faceted sources of inspiration for USU music therapy students both personally and professionally. In our field of study, we often talk about “self as instrument”, or rather, being the instrument of change within the therapeutic relationship. During MUSES, we get to shift our focus to also celebrate our external musical skills and instruments as extensions of ourselves, and the tools by which we get to share creative self-expression with the world. Concert goers will enjoy original compositions in addition to contemporary and classical pieces that have been intentionally chosen to represent the experiences of our students and potential clinical applications of these works in music therapy practice. Additionally, attendees may have the opportunity to get involved first-hand with our interactive lobby experience before the performance. For more information, visit www.usumtsa.weebly.com.

CHaSS Book Proposal Charrette
Workshop/Training
In the Fall, CHaSS Research hosted a workshop with Darrin Pratt, Director of the University of Colorado Press. Pratt shared best practices for academic press book proposals. To follow up on the advice provided during this workshop, we will be offering a charrette - a hands-on, collaborative peer review - specifically focused on in-progress book proposals. Who: Participation in the charrette is by application and is limited to 12 CHaSS faculty (at any rank or campus), including lecturers and post-docs. Preference, however, will be given to early career scholars and those soon seeking promotion. Workshop format: Faculty will be split into small groups based upon their interests and backgrounds. Each faculty member will share their book proposal (in the stage or format that it’s in) prior to the workshop with their group to receive targeted feedback. Participants will each review 1 or 2 book proposals. The workshop will also include an overview of “best practices” for book proposals and summary remarks. 13,000+ Years of Indigenous History in Eastern Utah
Lecture/Readings
Eastern Utah is well-known for the spectacular rock art found in places like Nine Mile Canyon and the Puebloan architecture of Bears Ears National Monument and other landscapes. But the stories of the indigenous people who have called this land home for millennia are also preserved in much less notable sites that reflect the ephemera of daily activities such as cooking a meal or making a tool. Join Dr. Tim Riley as he explores the material history of this landscape with a focus on how we can learn more about people from the objects they left behind and how we can visit these places today with minimal impact and maximal respect.
Part of USU Eastern's "From the Book Cliffs to Blanding: A Panoramic View of Eastern Utah," come hear Eastern Prehistoric Museum Director Tim Riley talk about the first human inhabitants of Eastern Utah.
