Coping with Loss During COVID-19
Workshop/Training
Over the last year, most of us have accumulated multiple losses as a result of the global pandemic. Though loss weighs heavy on our hearts, these experiences are often the catalyst for reconstructing purpose and meaning about our lives. Additionally, collective experiences of grief and loss are unique opportunities for us to co-create meaning together.
In this webinar, we will learn how to support one another as we encounter the collective losses and the personal losses that each of us have endured over the last year. Attendees will be given a chance to explore how these losses have changed their view of self, relationships, and their purpose. Then, we will use this meaning to identify positive coping mechanisms to use as we turn to face the unknown in 2021.

The Geometry and Physics of Hitchin Systems
Conference/Seminar
Steven Rayan Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Saskatchewan
Director, Centre for Quantum Topology and Its Applications
Abstract: The moduli space of stable Higgs bundles on a Riemann surface, known as the Hitchin system, arises as a space of gauge-equivalent, dimensionally-reduced solutions to the self-dual Yang-Mills equations. This moduli space turns out to be a completely integrable Hamiltonian system; a noncompact Calabi-Yau manifold; and the natural setting for a mirror symmetry that is intertwined with Langlands duality. In this talk, I will introduce the Hitchin system from multiple points of view and sketch the interesting algebraic and geometric features that have been discovered over the past 30 years. I will conclude by speculating on connections between Higgs bundles and condensed-matter physics.

Our world is made of water and so are we. Water/Ways, an exhibition from Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street, takes a deep look at this essential component of life on our planet, which powers the environment’s engine, impacts climate and helps shape and sculpt the landscape.
Water/Ways is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Utah Humanities council, and was adapted from an exhibition organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York.
