Trans/Nonbinary Allies on Campus Training

Trans/Nonbinary Allies on Campus aims to increase awareness and understanding of our trans/nonbinary community and further understand specific trans/nonbinary issues while training participants to stand with, and advocate for trans/nonbinary individuals. Participants will gain a basic understanding of sex, sexuality, and gender and how these concepts perpetuate microaggressions, discrimination policies, and daily biases. Prepare to dispel some common myths, laugh, and leave with the understanding that there is much work to be done in our community and you are part of the solution. Lunch & Learn - Nutrition and Mental Health
Workshop/Training
USU Be Well and Registered Dietitian, Brooke Lister, present a lunch and learn on nutrition and mental health. From a young age, we are taught that proper nutrition helps us to feel our physical best. However, we’re not always told that our nutrition habits can significantly affect our mental health. A balanced diet helps us to feel more alert and improves concentration and attention span. In addition, having a good balance of foods can help reduce stress and depression. In this presentation, we will be talking about how diet can affect our mental health. You will also learn some tips to have a diet that supports mental health as well as certain foods that really help to support our brain. *Presentation will be available in person, virtually and will be recorded. Attendance and participation in this event qualify as an activity for the Be Well Rewards program.

The Office of Equity’s “Conducting an Inclusive Search: Best Practices” training will help hiring and search committees understand the ways in which they can limit bias during the hiring and search processes. It is an interactive training that focuses on the various aspects of the processes (from establishing group operating procedures to evaluating candidate interviews). It can be tailored to the needs of the individual hiring or search committee.

A Collective Approach Workshop: Dr. Chris Linder
Workshop/Training
As attention to campus sexual violence has grown in recent years, educators and staff have been pressured to respond quickly to comply with campus, local and federal policies. This pressure has resulted in a hyper-focus on compliance and response — after sexual violence happens, rather than working to prevent it from happening in the first place. Educators also may feel pressure to use a one-size fits all, “best practices” approach rather than developing their own, context-specific strategies. In this workshop, Chris talks about moving beyond the “expert model” to engage all members of the campus community who have an interest in addressing relationship and sexual violence. Participants will leave this workshop with several specific strategies they can use to immediately address campus sexual violence and an action plan for developing educational programming for the campus community. Dr. Chris Linder (she/her/hers) is the director of the McCluskey Center for Violence Prevention, which engages in research and education, at the University of Utah. She also is an associate professor of higher education; her scholarship focuses on sexual violence prevention and student activism.

USU Restoration Consortium Short Course: Beaver Translocation
Workshop/Training
Instructors: Dr. Nick Bouwes, Nate Norman & Becky Yeager Dates: September 26-28, 2023 Description: This course is designed for individuals and groups who are interested in live trapping and relocating beaver for stream restoration. Students will gain: 1. Ability to work with landowners in protecting their property while living with beavers when possible. 2. Knowledge of types of beaver traps and how to properly set them. 3. Knowledge of how to safely transport beaver. 4. Ability to handle beavers to collect and record pertinent data after captures. 5. Knowledge of important components for temporary beaver husbandry. 6. Ability to select proper relocation areas for release. Learn how to prepare relocation areas to increase success

In other words, peer reviews have material, professional consequences. It’s surprising, then, that scholars are rarely trained in how to be a good reviewer. In this workshop, you’ll learn a practical heuristic for providing peer review feedback that is inclusive, helpful, and appropriate.
