Swift Water Rescue PRO-1

Information/Orientation

This is a professional level swift water rescue course designed for those requiring certification as a term of employment in a professional capacity; this course teaches rescue techniques with regard to limited resources in a variety of river settings. This 2 day, 18 hr course (with online training) meets the needs of professional river guides as well as USFS, NPS, Search and Rescue teams, Field Biologists, and BLM employees. Additionally, this course is open to recreational river users wishing to train on the PRO track and have access to the PRO-II course not accessible through the REC track. Course focus is on personal safety, decision making, risk management, and complex problem solving with other team members having limited rescue resources and communication with outside parties. This course is designed to meet varying student skill levels, and everyone from professional guides to seasonal contractors will benefit from the rescue techniques and concepts covered in this course. Self rescue and hazard avoidance and recognition are key components in this swiftwater course. This course is instructed by Swiftwater Safety Institute (SSI) in partnership with USU Outdoor Programs.

Intersections of Practice: A Candid Conversation on Career Paths About the Lecture: What inspires you and drives your future career path? How does that inspired career intersect with your personal life? In this dialog, we’ll look at the differences between public and private sector practice in Landscape Architecture through a project-focused lens. Creasey will focus on providing transparent information and a wide variety of example projects to help new graduates make informed decisions about their future careers. Speaker Bio: Chris Creasey is a Landscape Architect with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District focused on large-scale interdisciplinary civil works and military projects throughout the Midwest and Mountain West. His practice includes work on tribal partnership lands bordering USACE managed waterways, interagency projects for NPS, Fish & Wildlife, and the Department of Energy, and stormwater management and master planning for seven military installations spanning five states. Chris began his career at Sasaki Associates in Boston where his practice included all phases of design, from planning to construction administration at a variety of scales.

Prospero uses magic to conjure a storm and torment the survivors of a shipwreck, including the King of Naples and Prospero’s treacherous brother, Antonio. Prospero’s slave, Caliban, plots to rid himself of his master, but is thwarted by Prospero’s spirit-servant Ariel. The Utah State University Wind Orchestra, conducted by Director of Bands Thomas P. Rohrer, will hold its annual spring concert on April 19, 2024, at 7:30 PM in Daines Concert Hall on the USU campus. The event, honoring Dr. Jon Gudmundson’s 21 years as Professor of Saxophone and Director of Jazz Studies, will feature special alumni guests and tributes to his contributions. The concert will include a mix of classical and jazz pieces, showcasing Dr. Gudmundson’s diverse expertise and lasting impact on the university’s music department. Attendees can also enjoy comments from faculty and alumni, as well as a saxophone solo by one of Dr. Gudmundson’s former students.
