Sentinels Opening Reception

Arts/Entertainment

The Last Glacier Collective is a collaboration of artists that work to present their concern for the global future through artistic imagery. Their new large-scale art book Sentinels: The Pinon Pine and Juniper Trees of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments has just been released. Sentinels includes 12 large woodcuts by artists Todd Anderson and Bruce Crownover and three “word paintings” by scientist Gary Machlis. The artists are excited to display Sentinels in the region that inspired its creation, reinforcing that the arts and sciences can further engage the public with the natural and cultural heritage of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. Previous works by the Last Glacier Collective are in the collections of the Getty Museum, Yale and Stanford Universities, the U.S. Library of Congress, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others.
Prints will remain on exhibit to the public at USU Moab during business hours through May.

Demarcation: a survey of contemporary photography in Utah

Exhibition

Early photographic surveys of the American West explored the physical territory; this portfolio examines the conceptual landscape of creative practice by photographic artists spanning the vast spaces of Utah. The artists have strong connections to the state and their images represent a diversity beyond geographic boundaries; they interrupt convention and draw new lines. Intended to serve as a document of a historical moment, this portfolio was created as
an act of generosity, especially through its inclusion of a younger generation of artists who represent not only the current state of photographic art, but also its future.

Make do and Mend: The Impact of the Second World War on the Style and Acquisition of Clothing

Lecture/Readings

Join us for the Friends of the Merrill-Cazier Library Spring Lecture! Nancy Hills, Head of USU's Theatre Costume Design Program, will deliver Make do and Mend: The Impact of the Second World War on the Style and Acquisition of Clothing on March 29th at 7:00 p.m. Immediate, basic human needs include food, clothing, and shelter. When societies engage in war these necessities are compromised. It might seem irreverent to consider fashion in the context of conflict, but the experience of war and the upheaval it foists on society is always reflected in the way society attires itself.

3rd Annual Indigenous Knowledge Symposium

Conference/Seminar

The MESAS Indigenous Knowledge Symposium invites scholars to share their research, insights, and experiences working across various scientific disciplines. It is our hope that this annual symposium provides USU students, staff, faculty, and our larger community with an understanding of the critical role that Indigenous perspectives hold in the future of research and education.
This year we have invited three Indigenous scholars to share their knowledge.
Dr. Andrea Reid is an Assistant Professor of Indigenous Fisheries at The University of British Columbia. Dr. Melinda Adams is an Assistant Professor in Indigenous Studies and Geography & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Kansas. Finally, Dr. Karlatta Chief is a professor of Environmental Science at the University of Arizona.
