Science Unwrapped - Can We Live the Good Life and Keep Our Planet Healthy?

Special Event | Science Unwrapped

Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science. Watershed scientist Patrick Belmont, professor in USU's Department of Watershed Sciences, presents "Can We Live the Good Life and Keep Our Planet Healthy?" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU campus, Logan. Admission is free. Refreshments and hands-on learning activities follow Dr. Belmont's talk. Talk Description: Watershed scientist Patrick Belmont explores how we can better align economics and sustainability to put us on track for improving quality of life for people, while protecting the ecosystems on which our economy depends. Drawing on collaborations he’s convened with scientists, land managers and entrepreneurs, Belmont illustrates how we can pool our knowledge and energy to create communities that can thrive in the ever changing social, cultural, and economic landscape. Dr. Belmont's talk is part of Science Unwrapped's Fall 2024 "Joining Forces" series.

High Tunnel Greenhouse Demonstration - Hosted by USU UB Extension

Legacy of Val Day of Service: Fruit Picking with USU Harvest Rescue

Join us as we honor the legacy of Val R Christensen and fight food waste and food insecurity! USU Harvest Rescue coordinates volunteers to pick local produce that might go to waste, then donates it to various food pantries, including the SNAC Pantry. Legacy of Val Day of Service: Whittier Community Center Carnival

Special Event

Help us honor the legacy of Val Christensen by assisting at the oldest community Halloween carnival in the valley! We will be in charge of a glow stick dance area at the Whittier Community Center's annual free carnival for kids. Volunteers in the morning can help set up the stage, and volunteers in the afternoon will hand out glow sticks, manage music, and dance with kids as they come and go from the stage. Volunteers are not required to attend the entire Carnival, shifts available in 1hr-3hr blocks. Register through AggiePulse, link provided.

Legacy of Val Day of Service: Planting Day at Wuda Ogwa

Special Event

Join us as we honor the legacy of Val R Christensen and support the Northwestern Band of Shoshone (NWB) in their efforts to restore the ecosystem at Wuda Ogwa (located outside of Preston, ID). We will be planting native plants throughout the property formerly known as the Bear River Massacre Site. Let us know in the registration form if you'd like a spot in our minibus (only 14 spots available). Lunch will be provided by the NWB. We have some work gloves to lend out. Feel free to bring a digging tool (such as a shovel or a hand auger) if you have them. After you register, we will send you one more form to fill out that gives information to the NWB. Data scientist John Lawson, research assistant professor in USU's Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Bingham Research Center at USU Uintah Basin, presents "A.I. is an Astounding Innovation, but Can We Trust It?" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU campus, Logan. Admission is free. Refreshments and hands-on learning activities follow Dr. Lawson's talk. Talk Description: Artificial intelligence – AI – captures our imaginations with its rocketing innovation and surging accessibility. AI-generated text, video, images and voices seem like magic, yet can also be a wolf in sheep’s clothing with incorrect and misleading information. How do we harness this amazing tool, while curbing potential harm? Data scientist John Lawson, who uses AI to predict weather hazards, explores what it means, and the diverse skills, knowledge and precautions needed, to create trustworthy AI. Dr. Lawson's talk is part of Science Unwrapped's Fall 2024 "Joining Forces" series.

American Red Cross Blood Drive

The need for blood is constant, but only about 3% of age-eligible people donate blood yearly! Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Blood is essential to help patients survive surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. This lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation.

Legacy of Val Day of Service: Loaves & Fishes Community Meal

Special Event

Honor the legacy of Val Christensen by pitching in at the Loaves & Fishes Community Meal! Volunteers will be prepping and serving food, bussing tables, washing dishes, and helping set up and take down. Most volunteers are needed on Saturday, but there are a few slots to fill on Friday night for prep. Click the Register button to be taken to the sign up form. Loaves & Fishes is non-denominational, but takes place inside First Presbyterian Church in Logan because there is a commercial kitchen there. Volunteers are enthusiastically encouraged to grab a plate and sit next to community members that they might not ever meet outside of this free meal. Register through AggiePulse, link provided.
