Shadow a Music Major Day

High school students who are interested in learning more about majoring in music are invited to participate in the Utah State University Music Department Shadow A Music Major Days. Students are invited to visit campus on November 7th or November 8th to observe classes, rehearsals, and private lessons, and hear from a panel of students and faculty about life as a music major at Utah State. Lunch will also be provided. Register by google form using the included web link. This will be a great event for students who are planning to major in music and for those who are considering a music major and would like to learn more about the experience of a music student. Classes and rehearsals will be of interest to students who are considering majors in Music Performance, Music Education, and Music Therapy. USUSA is accepting new or gently used toys, books, puzzles, board games, etc. Toys can be brought to the front desk at the Utah State University Salt Lake Campus or to respective statewide locations. Día de Los Muertos Ofrenda

Arts/Entertainment

Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration of life and death that connects family members and allows many to grow closer with their loved ones. NEHMA highlights this tradition by creating a large ofrenda (offering table) in the lobby of the museum. On display are calaveras (decorated skulls), photos, food, candles, and marigold flowers to represent different kinds of ofrendas. People are welcome to dedicate a small portion of that ofrenda to someone they lost by writing their name on the ofrenda wall. Come visit the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art and our Día de Los Muertos ofrenda!

The role of an instructor in higher education is part expert, part mentor, part administration, and part student. In this GrTS session, co-hosted by Empowering Teaching Excellence, a panel of USU faculty will share their experiences navigating their role as instructors in higher education and give some insightful tips for those interested in pursuing an academic career.

The Ecology Center provides free, graduate student-led workshops on programming for data analysis. Sessions are held on Tuesdays at 3:00PM in NR 204, and are designed for beginners in the topic. Scholar of American Music, Dr. Mark Clague will present a fascinating lecture on "The Star Spangled Banner," exploring the context of its creation and the history of its reception as the National Anthem of the United States.

What is "our music"? As an institution in the intermountain West, USU is located in a place associated with many different kinds of music. the Decisions we make about which of these we foreground have profound implications. What do our students deserve to learn? Which faculty have the responsibility-or the right-to teach each repertoire? And how, as a university, do we define the collective "us" we seek to serve?
