Sky Above, Earth Below: A History of Western Landscape Photography
Exhibition
“Sky Above, Earth Below” traces the development of western landscape photography from the late 19th century to the 21st century, starting with early American photographers like Myra Albert Wiggins, Edward Curtis, and Karl Struss and concluding with contemporary photographers like Barry Andersen, Kimberly Anderson, Karalee Kuchar, and Charlotte Trolinger. The exhibition includes work from members of the Seattle Camera Club, FSA (Farm Security Administration), f/64 (a group of 20th-century photographers known for precise exposures and depiction of natural forms) and contemporary photography portfolios such as American Roads (printed in 1981), The Museum Project (printed in 2015), and DEMARCATION (printed in 2018).
Latinx from the NEHMA Collection
Exhibition
Latinx works of art represent a growing part of the NEHMA collection and reflect a significant influence in Western American art. New acquisitions by Yolanda Gonzalez, Leo Limón, Paul Sierra and Eloy Torrez will be featured in Latinx from the Collection as well as a grouping of paños, artworks created on handkerchiefs by artists incarcerated in Texas penitentiaries.
Latinx from the NEHMA Collection is co-curated by USU Art History Professor Alvaro Ibarra and NEHMA Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Bolton Colburn.
Haikus, Modernism and Stanton MacDonald-Wright
Exhibition
Stanton MacDonald-Wright’s “Haiga Portfolio” (1965-1966) blends Eastern and Western influences, pairing vibrant modernist paintings with haikus written by some of Japan’s most influential poets.
The term “haiga” refers to a style of Japanese painting by haiku poets, whose poems are known for their brevity and simplicity. Each of the ten prints that compose the “Haiga Portfolio” have a corresponding haiku.
The “Haiga Portfolio” exemplifies the 20th century modernist movement Synchromism, cofounded in 1913 by MacDonald-Wright and Morgan Russell. The movement sought to arrange color in the same way that sound is composed in music and is considered the first American avant-guard movement to be accepted internationally. Seventy-five years old at the time of the portfolio’s creation, MacDonald-Wright employed the use of energetic, swirling shapes coupled with dense, vivid colors orchestrated in the modernist style and the rhythm of Synchromism.

Aaron Coleman Exhibition
Arts/Entertainment
Aaron is an artist/printmaker who is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona. Below is a description of his work. My work has evolved into a blanket description of the apocalyptic world in which we live. Police brutality, racial discrimination, religious extremism, persecution of the LGBT communities, economic unrest, global warming, species extinction, habitat loss, holy wars, power trips and ego mania are the extremes my work addresses. Earth is a disaster area, a gigantic crime scene. My work takes on the characteristics of this global chaos. Each piece is an explosive combination of comic book pages, religious iconography and advertising which illustrates a world in ruin and the heroes and villains who occupy it.
Communities West IV
Arts/Entertainment
Communities West IV is the fourth iteration of a biennial exchange. The folio was created with the intention of building community among printmakers living in, or with unyielding ties to the Western United States. In addition to building community, we are also interested in building a survey of printmakers who identify as having ties to the west and following their development through the continued curation of the portfolio. For the 4th iteration of the folio, participants from the first three folios were asked to participate again. The original list has also been added to through suggestions from members and seeking out work at conferences and events. As such the work represented is rich and varied in technique and concept. The artists in the folio are as diverse as the work. The community is made up of veteran and emerging printers, academics and working artists.

Biological Engineering Seminar Series
Conference/Seminar
The BE Department's Seminar Series Speaker, Mr. Abraham Verdoees, BioEngineering Manager at ELITechGroup, will present: "Technology and Regulatory Requirements in Research and Development Environments: The Effect on Experiments and Businesses".
January 13th at 12:30 am in ENGR 326
The research and development (R&D) environment is always evolving to keep pace with novel technology and new regulatory requirements. Keeping pace includes updating analytical procedures, adapting to electronic notebooks and signatures, and compliance with 21 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Part 11, among others. FDA regulation compliance affects the whole laboratory, including instrumentation, from scales to HPLCs. Regulation and technology changes, along with other global shifts, are impacting the way experiments are conducted and data are handled in the modern laboratory. Today's presentation will look at the skills and solutions needed to comply with modern regulatory requirements, how technology is informing these approaches, and the practicality of different tactics across business contexts.
A meet and greet with Mr. Verdoes will be held immediately following the seminar in ENGR 326.

Every Brilliant Thing
Special Event
A touring company performing a play with a life-affirming message so powerful that the Utah Shakespeare Festival is offering it to every public high school and university in the state of Utah, in an effort to help stem the tide of youth suicide, is coming to USU. Every Brilliant Thing, by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe, is an ingenious, heartfelt, highly theatrical one-person show wherein the narrator interacts directly with the audience.
Audience members learn that when the narrator was a child, his or her mother suffered from depression and attempted suicide. The narrator decided to make a list of all the things that make life worth living to persuade her to live, starting with #1, “ice cream,” and continuing to one million. This inventive, beautifully rendered theatrical experience is unique in the way the audience becomes a support community for the narrator and gains rich insights along the way about the things hiding in plain sight that make life worthwhile and wonderful.
The production at USU is hosted as part of Caine College of the Arts Week activities.

Entrepreneur Leadership Series - Nicole Tanner
Panel Discussion/Presentation
Nicole Tanner, Co-founder of Swig
With her husband’s marketing degree and her degree of Administrative Assistant (plus building her team as a Mary Kay consultant for many years), they dreamed of creating something from nothing and making it their own. One day while brainstorming ideas for a new business, her husband said, “What is something we have every day, multiple times a day?” Nicole responded, “That’s easy, we get a Sonic (Diet Coke). He responded, “What if we build a business with just drive-thru fountain drinks?” And that is how Swig came to be!

Struggling with Mathematics: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful!
Conference/Seminar
The ways in which we have traditionally used the word “struggle” in mathematics need to change. All students need GOOD opportunities to struggle with concepts in mathematics in order to make sense of the world around them. No student should be told that they are BAD at math by being labeled as low or struggling. Each individual student deserves guidance to find ways to use their strengths as mathematical assets. We, as teachers of mathematics, can facilitate a classroom in which all students contribute their strengths and learn from others’ strengths to create a class unified in the goal of learning and growing. It is then that both teacher and student alike will see the BEAUTIFUL designs in the seemingly random collections of people, numbers, opportunities, and challenges. These claims will be presented in the context of Dr. DeLeeuw’s personal experiences as a Utah high school teacher and university professor and supported by his and others’ research about mathematics education.

Applied Mathematics Seminar: Extreme First Passage Times of Diffusion
Conference/Seminar
Speaker: Sean D Lawley, Department of Mathematics, University of Utah
Abstract: Why do 300 million sperm cells search for the oocyte in human fertilization when only a single sperm cell is necessary? Why do 1000 calcium ions enter a dendritic spine when only two ions are necessary to activate the relevant receptors? The seeming redundancy in these and many other biological systems can be understood in terms of extreme first passage time (FPT) theory.
While FPT theory is often used to estimate timescales in biology, the overwhelming majority of studies focus on the time it takes a given single searcher to find a target. However, in many scenarios the more relevant timescale is the FPT of the first searcher to find a target from a large group of searchers. This fastest FPT depends on extremely rare events and it is often orders of magnitude faster than the FPT of a given single searcher. In this talk, we will explain recent results in extreme FPT theory and show how they modify traditional notions of diffusion timescales.

January 27th at 12:30 pm in ENGR 326
Come and hear about how the decrease in production costs of robotic devices along with their speed and accuracy have made them attractive tools for potential use in diagnostic laboratories. However, not only devices but also the probes that are used as biosensors on these tools need to be developed. This presentation looks at some of the Renilla luciferase-based biosensors developed in the protein manipulation laboratory at University of Isfahan. These probes may simplify the detection of some human diseases and may have great potential for use in robotic devices.
A meet and greet with Dr. Emamzadeh will be held immediately following the seminar in ENGR 326.

Sky Above, Earth Below: A History of Western Landscape Photography

Applied Mathematics Seminar: Dynamic Fraud Detection via Sequential Modeling
Conference/Seminar
Speaker: Shuhan Yuan, Computer Science Department, USU
Abstract: Due to the openness and anonymity of the Internet, online platforms (e.g., online social media or knowledge bases) attract a large number of malicious users, such as vandals, trolls, and hoaxes. These malicious users impose severe security threats to online platforms and their legitimate participants. For example, the fraudsters on Twitter can easily spread fake information or post harmful links on the platform. Deep learning models have achieved promising results in image, text, and speech recognition. The key ingredient for the success of deep learning is because it learns meaningful representations of inputs. However, it is challenging to develop deep learning models for fraud detection. In this talk, I focus on tackling two challenges, lack of labeled training data and how to model physical time for fraud detection.
