Year of the Women: The Female Athlete Triad

Panel Discussion/Presentation | Year of the Woman

The Department of Kinesiology & Health Science is hosting multiple events as part of USU's Year of the Women Initiative in February. Please join our first event on Thursday, February 6.

This USU's Year of the Women event will focus on women's empowerment in sports and promoting awareness of eating disorders among college students on the National Women in Sports Day (February 6). Our keynote speaker, Dr. Elizabeth Joy, is the Medial Director for Community Health, Health Promotion and Wellness, and Food & Nutrition at Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, UT. Dr. Joy has been a well-respected medical doctor specializing in sports medicine eating disorders and also a leading researcher of the Female Athlete Triad, physical activity promotion, and diabetes prevention.

Utah State University is pleased to host the 2020 Utah Conference of Undergraduate Research. With schools from all over Utah, the day will be filled with poster sessions, oral presentations, and an art exhibit. See the list below for women-themed research that will presented throughout the day:

44 Years Since the Termination of Executive Order 9066

Cultural

This is a FREE speaker event open to the public wanting to learn more about American History about Exec Order 9066.

Returning to Utah State University we invite alumnus Yukio Shimomura to speak about his experience living through Executive Order 9066. The social injustice and inequality the Japanese people had to face during this time period. This event will make you think about similar events in our world and society.

With the intent to protect the U.S. from all espionage and sabotage from the Japanese, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive order 9066 on February 19, 1942.

Yukio Shimomura, born in San Francisco, California was in grade school when World War II started. His family and himself were incarcerated and interned to a camp in San Bruno, CA and later to the camp near Delta, Utah. Soon after they relocated to Ogden, UT where he graduated high school. Served in the U.S. Army, attended Weber State University and Utah State University where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Manufacturing Engineering.

Yukio will be share his experiences that happened to his family, before, during, and after the war in relevance to today's events.

Join us on Tuesday, February 25th for a nursing presentation from Tamara Martinez-Anderson (American Studies '94). Tamara has titled her talk "Beyond the RN: How Nurses are Shaping Healthcare through Advanced Degrees."

The professional pathways available for registered nurses includes advanced practice degrees, leadership, research, informatics, care coordination, specialization, and education.? Join USU Alumnae, Tamara Martinez-Anderson for a comprehensive overview of your options for academic progression and how to plan for a future of success beyond your RN degree.

Join us in WIDT 007 for this presentation directed at Nursing students. However, all students, faculty, and staff are welcome.

Tamara will conduct additional presentations on February 25th for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (MAIN 338 at 12pm) and those interested in applying to med school (ESLC 046 at 4:00pm). See Handshake for additional details.

Join us on Tuesday, February 25th for a Pre-Health presentation from Tamara Martinez-Anderson (American Studies '94). Tamara has titled her talk "Medical School Admissions: Preparing for Success using AAMC Core Competencies ."

With a commitment by medical schools to utilize a holistic review process, the criteria used to evaluate applicants is evolving. Join USU Alumnae, Tamara Martinez-Anderson for insights into what it takes to successfully navigate and prepare for the medical school admissions process. She’ll introduce the core competencies identified by the Association of American Medical Colleges and discuss the experiences valued by admission committees when evaluating candidates.?

Join us in ESLC 046 for this presentation directed at Pre-Health students. However, all students, faculty, and staff are welcome.
