Entrepreneur Leadership Series: Andrew Daines

This week’s speaker is Andrew Daines, who in 2019 Andrew launched Chassie, which designs, makes, and sells artistic furniture out of an 8,000 sq. ft. facility in the Bronx. As the world of work evolves, Chassie focuses on home and office desks that meet the new needs of a flexible workforce. After just two years Chassie has designed and built its unique style of furniture for hundreds of consumers and companies from Adobe to Warby Parker to Google.

Alumni Lunch Series

The CHaSS Alumni Lunch Series has gone online! Join us for Digital Take-Out as we discuss careers with esteemed alumni. Listen in and participate by asking questions during the live event on Zoom. Diana Call (MS ANTH '15, BS ANTH '07) got her start as an undergraduate building an exhibit for the Museum of Anthropology at Utah State University. From there she grew her skills at the Ogden Union Station before earning her M.S. in Archaeology and eventually making her way to southern Utah where she has been at the Dinosaur Discovery Site since 2016. Holly Andrew (BA ANTH '09) is an anthropologist, historian, and museum professional who serves as the Union Station Museum Curator. Holly actively works with Ogden City to improve the museum’s collections, interpretative exhibitions, and programs. She previously served as a public archaeologist with the University of Oklahoma and got her start at the Hyrum City Museum. All are welcome to join the conversation on Zoom, but to overlap with the ANTH 3310 course, this event will be held at 9am on February 3. TIAA Webinar - "Money at Work 2"

Join TIAA rep, Heidi Parkhill, and the Be Well program as we learn how to feel more secure in our savings strategy. Knowledge is the best investment and you should be verifying you’re on the right track. And if you’re off track, know what adjustments you need to make. Are you saving enough? Have you taken taxes into account? Do you have a financial plan—and have you thought about what retirement looks like? We'll teach you how to plan your investments and help you hold on to as much of your nest egg as possible. Attendance and participation in this event qualify as a required activity for the Be Well Rewards program. This will be held in person in LIB 154 and virtually via Zoom.

Entrepreneur Leadership Series: Joel Clark

This week’s speaker is Joel Clark. Joel’s story is a study in perseverance. When his brother Jon handed operations of Kodiak Cakes over to him in 1997, Joel was a 23-year-old economics major attending the University of Utah. Over the next 12 years, Joel juggled side jobs, earned an MBA from Oxford University, and still found time to make Kodiak Cakes a success.

Relaunching Your Career: Tools & Strategies for Women Returning to the Workforce

Many Utah women take career breaks for various reasons, including raising children, assisting with elder care, and managing other responsibilities. Eventually, many women want to relaunch their careers, whether it is full-time, part-time, or even contract work. Yet, relaunching is intimidating for so many women. Often, we feel that we are not prepared for professional work after being at home and outdated in terms of skills, competencies, and professional networks. Now in her final semester at Georgetown University, Savanna Jones graduated from USU in 2018 with a degree in Political Science. During her time in law school, Savanna has interned for the National Network to End Domestic Violence, externed for the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (the public defender’s office), and worked as a summer associate for Bailey & Glasser LLP, a mid-sized firm in D.C., where she focused on consumer litigation. Savanna has also served as both author and editor for the Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law and currently works as a student attorney for the Criminal Defense and Prisoner Advocacy Clinic.

Intersections on Inclusion: Pride in the Field

Many USU students, staff, and faculty are engaged in projects and research focused on the LGBTQIA+ community, as explored in the Utah State Today series, “Celebrating Pride.” Join us for a panel discussing approaches to research about, with, and by the LGBTQIA+ community. What key considerations should researchers center when studying gender and sexuality? From research design, to language use, to avoiding bias, to supporting researchers, what do inclusion, equity, and justice look like in practice? Panelists and attendees will reflect together on positionality, privilege, and marginalization, while taking away actionable practices for future research.
Entrepreneur Leadership Series: Adam Morgan

This week’s speaker is Adam Morgan, who is an Executive Creative Director at Adobe with 26 years of experience in creativity, strategy, and storytelling. In 2020, AdWeek named him one of the “Creative 100”—the top inspiring creative minds in marketing, media, and culture—in the world. Before Adobe, Adam was a creative director at several international ad agencies, delivering award-winning advertising campaigns. He was named a 40 under 40 Business Leader by Utah Business Magazine and Utah Ad Professional of the Year in 2014. He’s one of the few creative leaders to have a master’s degree in marketing strategy from Northwestern.

This week’s speakers are Mark Young and Speaker Young.
Mark Young spent 30 years owning and operating McDonald’s restaurants as a franchisee. During this time, he owned 6 of the highest volume McDonald’s in the western region, including the Park City McDonald’s featured on the Jay Leno show during the SLC 2002 Winter Olympics.
Spencer Young, son of Mark and Sue Young, grew up working in his father’s McDonald's. After graduating with a business degree from Dixie State University where he played football, Spencer found the Culver’s brand and fell in love. In 2015, Spencer opened the Orem, UT Culver’s, and a few years later followed with the St. George, UT and Logan, UT Culver’s.

Science Unwrapped - From Animals to Autism

Featured speaker is USU neurobiologist Sara Freeman, who presents "From Animals to Autism: The Science of Social Bonds" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on USU's Logan campus.
