History of Punctuation Poster Exhibition Celebrating National Punctuation Day

September 24 is National Punctuation Day. While punctuation may be viewed as a set of rigid grammar rules, the history of these symbols is fascinating, which was discovered by the students enrolled in Professor Joyce Kinkead’s History of Writing classes. Each student adopted a punctuation mark and then researched its origins. These histories are depicted graphically in colorful posters designed by Molly Etchberger, a graduate of Art and Design. The posters are on display in the Merrill-Cazier Library on the lower floor near Special Collections, September 11-October 9. A public reception with refreshments will be hosted by the Department of English on site on Friday, September 22 at noon.

The Clothesline Project is an annual event to raise awareness about domestic violence during the month of October, National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Clothesline Project is a visual display of shirts with graphic messages and illustrations that have been designed by survivors of interpersonal violence or by someone who loves someone who has been killed. It was created as a way for survivors to share what has happened to them as well as highlight the realities behind statistics of domestic violence that are often overlooked. The project will be displayed across USU Campus at various dining services locations. We are heading down south near Moab to spend the weekend playing on the Colorado River and hiking in the Moab area. We will enjoy our nights camped in beautiful red rock country while we paddle the rapids of the Moab Daily section and hike along beautiful red rock trails. Participants must be able to swim and prepared for fun on the water. Trip cost includes: food, transportation, campground fees, river equipment, and student leadership.

Wasserman Piano Series Presents: Sergei Babayan

The meditative focus and rare stillness of Armenian-American pianist Sergei Babayan's keyboard artistry prompted the Hamburger Abendblatt to liken him to "one of those Japanese calligraphers who contemplate the white page before them in silence until, at the exact right moment, their brush makes its instinctive, perfect sweep across the paper". Babayan himself has observed that making music should be open to surprises and spontaneous insights, allowing unexpected emotions to emerge and subtle shadings to evolve naturally. The University Honors Program presents the 48th Annual Honors Last Lecture, featuring Dr. Colin Flint, Distinguished Professor of Political Science in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Honors students nominated and interviewed faculty, selecting Dr. Flint as the 2023 Honors Outstanding Professor. His talk, titled “Dare to Build Global Peace,” will challenge audience members to consider the relationship between national security and the geopolitics of global peace. Farmer's version of the Arrington Mormon History Lecture will be an homage to the "Music & the Spoken Word" radio show, and a meditation on the relationship between landscape, religion, and sound.
About the Speaker:
Jared Farmer is the Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania and a former Andrew Carnegie Fellow. He is the author of four books, including On Zion's Mount: Mormons, Indians, and the American Landscape (2008), winner of the Francis Parkman Prize, and Elderflora: A Modern History of Ancient Trees (2022). Farmer's hometown is Provo, Utah and his alma mater is Utah State University.

Each student adopted a punctuation mark and then researched its origins. These histories are depicted graphically in colorful posters designed by Molly Etchberger, a graduate of Art and Design. The posters are on display in the Merrill-Cazier Library on the lower floor near Special Collections, September 11-October 9. A public reception with refreshments will be hosted by the Department of English on site on Friday, September 22 at noon.

Utah State University 2023 Homecoming is just a falling leaf away, with events going from Sunday, Oct. 1, through Saturday, Oct. 7. Longtime Aggies will recognize notable events for the week that include A Day of Giving on Thursday, Oct. 5 to help raise money for student scholarships and True Aggie Night on Friday, Oct. 6, just before midnight under the “A” lit blue atop Old Main. More fun begins Saturday, Oct. 7, with the Running of the Bulls 5K at 8:30 a.m. (sign up early for discount registration) and the Homecoming Parade on Logan’s Main Street at 10 a.m. The parade route begins on Center Street and ends at 800 North. Last but not least, people can show their Aggie pride by attending the annual Homecoming game against Colorado State University at 6 p.m. Four notable Aggies will be honored for their contributions to Utah State University during the Homecoming festivities. The honorees are a prominent feature of the Homecoming parade and are chosen for their record of service within their communities and support of the university. The honorees include David and Lynette Jenkins as Grand Marshals, James Edward Porras as Alumnus of the Year, and Amberley Lana Snyder as Young Alum

Sexism takes many forms, from blatant and aggressive to unintentional and subtle. Learning more about how it manifests can help each of us learn to respond in more productive ways whether we experienced it personally or are a bystander. Speaking up against sexism can be a powerful force for reducing gender inequity. By raising awareness of the widespread occurrence and damaging effects of sexist language, comments, beliefs, and behaviors, we can reduce the frequency of sexism in our workplaces, neighborhoods, communities, and the state.

What is "our music"? As an institution in the intermountain West, USU is located in a
place associated with many different kinds of music. The decisions we make about
which of these we foreground have profound implications. What do our students
deserve to learn? Which faculty have the responsibility—or the right—to teach each
repertoire? And how, as a university, do we define the collective “us” we seek to serve?
Dr. Trevor Reed (Arizona Sate University Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law) is the
first visiting scholar on the series. Dr. Reed’s research broadly explores the social
impacts of intellectual property law on individuals and their communities. His current
scholarship focuses on the linkages between creative production and Native American
sovereignty. Dr. Reed is currently advancing community-partnered projects to assist
Indigenous peoples as they protect and promote their cultural heritage, traditional
knowledge, traditional cultural expressions, and other intellectual properties by
strategically drawing on tribal, federal, and international law.

Garland School of Social Work, will be presenting on the topic of religious and spiritual competence in social work practice. This event is free and open to the community. Annular Solar Eclipse Observation

USU's College of Science invites all ages to join in a safe observation of the Annular Solar Eclipse, outside on the USU Quad, on Saturday morning, October 14, 2023. Cache Valley will experience a partial eclipse (80 percent) , beginning at about 9:10 a.m., reaching maximum at about 10:30 a.m., and ending shortly before noon. Join Aggie Scientists, and other USU scholars, in learning about this phenomenon, and learning how to observe it safely. Rule #1: NEVER look directly at the Sun in any conditions, to avoid eye and sight damage. We will gather on the Quad and discuss how to observe the event safely (with backs to the Sun) using special pinhole postcards to be distributed on the day. We'll also talk about what the eclipse is and other related topics. Admission is free.

CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer & First Aid

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers and First Aid course is to instruct those who have a duty to act (professional rescuers) in the knowledge and skills needed to respond appropriately to first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies. This includes the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to care for a victim experiencing cardiac arrest. This is a blended learning course, you should expect a direct link to the online content to be sent to your email 3 days prior to the course to complete the online learning content prior to the start time of the course. Dr. Datta is an award-winning scholar of British Empire and Asian (South and Southeast Asian) history. Documentary Screening - Ultimate Weapon: The H-Bomb Dilemma

All are invited to a free screening of the independent documentary, "Ultimate Weapon: The H-Bomb Dilemma" at 6 pm in Room FAV 262 (Fine Arts Visual Building) on the USU Logan campus. The 45-minute film, which debuted on The History Channel in August 2000, explores the secret late-1940s/early-1950s debate on the decision to build the H-bomb. It features declassified information from the Los Alamos National Laboratory archives, along with other sources. The film was written by Peter Galison, Pellegrino University Professor of the History of Science and of Physics at Harvard University. Galison is the keynote speaker for the October 20-21, 2023 Four Corners Regional Meeting of the American Physical Society, which will be held in Logan, Utah. The public may access Galison's keynote address, set for Friday evening, Oct. 20, via Zoom. For the address time and a Zoom link, call 435-797-2857.

Join us at the LLC for a faculty talk by Noel Carmack, USU Eastern Associate Professor of Art on Wednesday, October 25! The talk is titled, “The Utah Agricultural College’s First Celebrity Alum: The Early Life and Learnings of Herbert Morton Stoops, Illustrator of American Pulp Fiction."
For the first few decades of the twentieth century, Herbert Morton Stoops was the most celebrated UAC Aggie in the nation. His paintings and drawings illustrated some of America’s most popular pulp magazines and fiction books. In this presentation, Stoop’s life on an Idaho ranch and as a UAC art student will be discussed.

Join us for a special and informative lecture with Lisa Gabbert, Associate Professor in the Department of English and Director of the Folklore Program. This talk draws on eighteen oral histories conducted by students for a graduate seminar in the spring of 2022 with friends, employees, users, and owners of Beaver Mountain, examining what Beaver Mountain and skiing means to them, the local culture, and the community at large.

The Clothesline Project is a visual display of shirts with graphic messages and illustrations that have been designed by survivors of interpersonal violence or by someone who loves someone who has been killed. It was created as a way for survivors to share what has happened to them as well as highlight the realities behind statistics of domestic violence that are often overlooked. The project will be displayed across USU Campus at various dining services locations. Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration of life and death that connects family members and allows many to grow closer with their loved ones. NEHMA highlights this tradition by creating a large ofrenda (offering table) in the lobby of the museum. On display are calaveras (decorated skulls), photos, food, candles, and marigold flowers to represent different kinds of ofrendas. People are welcome to dedicate a small portion of that ofrenda to someone they lost by writing their name on the ofrenda wall. Cache Symphony Orchestra

The Cache Symphony Orchestra was created over 35 years ago as a way for community members in the Cache Valley region to make music, meet with fellow musicians, and provide another source of fine classical music to the community.
The Orchestra is made up of community volunteers. It started with only a handful of musicians and has grown to a grand symphony with over 90 members. For the regular season, the orchestra performs on the campus of Utah State University twice a year: winter and spring.

This course is a great introduction to wilderness medicine and basic life support skills. It is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast who wants more than an urban first aid course provides. The emphasis of the class is on recognizing and treating life-threatening traumatic and medical emergencies, common wilderness injuries, bandaging and splinting, and environmental injuries. CPR is included in the curriculum.

-Save The Date!! USU Blanding Campus will be hosting the Annual Halloween Trunk or Treat event in collaboration with Blanding Community Businesses. WITCH WAY TO THE CANDY! 🍭🍬 Come join us for a fun family event for all ages! We will have a spooky time! 🎃 Monday, October 30th | 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm 576 West 200 South, Blanding, UT Questions? Want to participate with a Trunk and hand out candy? Contact us @ 435-678-8160 **If inclement weather, we will move the event into the Blanding Arts & Events Center.
Halloween Bike Ride
Student Activities
Join Backcountry Squatters and Aggie Blue Bikes on a fun Halloween-themed bike ride around Logan! This event is open to anyone and everyone in the Logan community. There will be a costume contest for participants with prizes for the winners! We will be meeting at 5:00 PM on October 30th in front of Aggie Blue Bikes and ending in downtown Logan. We look forward to seeing you there!
