Peak Fellows & Summer URCO Grant Applications Open
Date/Deadline
The Peak Summer Research Fellowship funds a select cohort of highly engaged undergraduate students in the Peaks’ colleges—the College of Science and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences—through a summer research experience. These fellows will spend ten weeks actively engaging in research with faculty mentors, have access to special trainings and workshops, and will come out of this fellowship poised to succeed in competitive applications for graduate school and national fellowships and grants.

The new year is filled with new resolutions to lose weight, but they often don't last past January. Although losing weight can be good for overall health, focusing on weight loss alone can lead to cycles of losing and regaining weight, lower self-esteem, and a preoccupation with food and body image. You'll find more success if you set goals that focus on health instead of weight loss only. Multifarious Trio Concert

Multifarious is an international trio featuring Scottish saxophonist Sue McKenzie, Kansas cellist Susan Mayo, and Colorado banjoist Paul Elwood. Their music has been described as "Bela Fleck meets the Art Ensemble of Chicago." From jazz and avant-garde via deconstructed bluegrass, the trio weaves inventive improvisations amongst diverse sounds. They have been featured on BBC Radio 3 "Freeness" and their debut album, Incidents, was released in February 2021. Notable performances include Le Jam and Le Corbusier (Marseille, France), the Katowice JazzArt Festival (Poland), Broadcast (Glasgow, Scotland), WUTC Radio, Barking Legs, and Cadek Hall (Chattanooga), the Kontesa Jazz Club (Zagreb, Croatia) and the Riney Fine Arts Center (Wichita).

This CHaSS Research Workshop will take the format of a charrette (a hands-on, collaborative peer-review workshop) specifically focused on in-progress book proposals. Participation in the workshop is by application and limited to 12 CHaSS faculty (at any rank or campus), including lecturers and post-docs. “Dark Winds Rising” – Logan Canyon Winds
Arts/Entertainment
Logan Canyon Winds present a program of contrasting moods; at the center of the recital is Philip Bimstein’s Dark Winds Rising, a musical reflection on the plan to build a toxic waste incinerator on Native American lands, featuring recorded voices of impacted individuals. Other selections on the program include Debussy’s classic “Girl with the Flaxen Hair,” Deslandres’ beautiful Quintet, and a new arrangement of Bartok’s Transylvanian Dances by Logan Canyon Winds’ own Lauren Hunt. The program also features the hopeful and energetic Quintet No. 1 by Giuseppe Cambini.
This concert will be livestreamed on the CCA YouTube channel.

Mark Grant is a five-time Emmy Award-winning director, and 24-year veteran of CBS Sports. He covers NFL and college football, college basketball, and golf. He has covered sports in ten countries and in 48 states. Prior to CBS, he worked with ESPN for 11 years, where he covered nearly all the major events covered by the network. In addition to his Emmy Awards he has won three Awards for Cable Excellence, the highest honor for TV production in the cable television industry. Many could consider him a trailblazer because he was the first African-American TV director at both ESPN and CBS. Today, he is only one of a very few in all of sports television. In 2020, Grant directed the Los Angeles Chargers-Denver Broncos game on CBS alongside producer Kimani Morales, marking the first time that an NFL telecast was led by both an African-American producer and director. A 43-year veteran of the television industry, Mark got his start in local cable television, where he covered city council and school board meetings, high school sports, parades, and other events of community interest. Entrepreneur Leadership Series: Reverend Jay and Toni Ragsdale
Panel Discussion/Presentation
Reverend Jay was born in Bakersfield, California. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from the University of Wyoming. After “horsing around” for several years, he accepted the call from God to minister to His people. Eventually he came to Utah in search of his brother who was homeless. A year after his brother had died, Jay set out for Pioneer Park on a mission to assist the homeless with a bible and a box of donuts. Fill The Pot Ministry now feeds around 400 people every week in the heart of Salt Lake City, and also provides clothing, shoes, coats, hygiene items, food boxes, and spiritual guidance.
Toni was born in Chicago, Illinois, in an area full of crime and poverty. She works full time as the manager of the Customer Service Department of Insure-Rite for the State of Utah. She is also the co-director of Fill The Pot Ministry and plays a major role to make sure the organization’s doors are always open. Toni was the Director of the Women Ministry at Calvary Baptist Church for nine years. In 2019, she received the Humans Rights Award from the Church Women United Organization. Toni thrives from waking up each day with new opportunities to be used by God. “Being available” is her motto.

The Tenuous Renaissance?in Playscape Design
In recent?years, the U.S. has undergone a renaissance in playscape design. Those designing and commissioning playgrounds are increasingly moving away from static pole and platform structures that provide?little play value and even less challenge. While safety is still one of the major drivers of playground?design, there?is an increasing understanding that not all risks can or should be limited--and some are beneficial. The adventure playground--where children build their own environments with hammers and saws--has made a bit of a comeback, and loose parts are being embraced on a wider scale. Innovative climbing features let children climb higher, farther, and in more social?ways--while limiting falls from high places. And designers are increasingly bringing nature into playscapes--which has positive?impacts on children's?health and well-being.?
In this presentation, Daniel Jost will discuss the playscape renaissance taking place, some of the playscapes he documented as a writer at Landscape Architecture Magazine, and his own efforts to support thoughtful playscapes and outdoor learning environments.

Science Unwrapped: Computing with Honeybees

Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the public outreach program of USU's College of Science. Admission is free. Our Feb. 10 speaker is USU computer scientist Vladimir Kulyukin, who presents "Music, Traffic, Solar Harvests: Computing with Honeybees" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU Logan campus. Dr. Kulyukin will speak for about half an hour and then invite questions from the audience. Afterwards, enjoy refreshments and hands-on STEM learning activities provided by student and community groups in the ESLC atrium. Powder Mountain Ski Day

Come join us for a day of skiing/snowboarding at Powder Mountain resort. We will meet up at Outdoor Programs, load up our ski/snowboard gear, and head to Powder Mountain to burn some turns. All riding abilities are welcome as there is terrain for everyone. Trip cost includes transportation and Powder Mountain lift ticket. Discounted ski rentals are available for an additional $10. This trip does not include ski or snowboard instruction. If you would like a lesson, you can contact Powder Mountain ski school. Participants must be registered and travel to and from Powder Mountain with Outdoor Programs to be eligible for the discount lift ticket.

CIDI Workshop - Digital Badging Using Canvas Credentials (previously Badgr)

Digital badges are sometimes called microcredentials. They can be awarded to students for various accomplishments and then shared by students on social media and elsewhere as an indicator of their accomplishment or competence. Canvas has an integrated digital badging tool called Canvas Credentials (previously called Badgr). This workshop addresses how to create, award, and track digital badges.

The first, Graystoke Investments, is a commercial real estate fund focused on one-of-a-kind Airbnb resorts for action sports families near snowboarding mountains, surfing beaches, and national parks. The second, Graystoke Advisors, is a management consulting firm with special operations soldiers who teach leadership classes. The third, Graystoke Media, makes videos and podcasts for some of the largest media companies in the world, as well as for CEO’s and Investment Fund Managers. Jess completed the Harvard Business School program on Private Equity and Venture Capital before becoming the CEO of his last investment fund. Concerts are part for the band large ensembles curriculum. As capstone events, they typically occur twice per semester. Students are required to participate in these events as a large part of their grades, and these concerts are the culmination of several weeks of classroom rehearsals. On Friday, February 17 at 12:30PM MST, we'll feature Ashley Naughton (BA International Studies ’16) for a conversation on Political Science majors working in the nuclear industry. Ashley Naughton is a Technical Project Manager for Los Alamos National Laboratory. This historic laboratory, where the Manhattan Project was established, is federally-funded institution that focuses on nuclear research and development to advance national security. Ashley graduated from Utah State University in 2016 with a degree in International Studies and was a member of Theta Nu Xi sorority. USU provided her with the skills and experience to become a strong professional within the nuclear industry. As a native New Mexican, Ashley is happy to be back in her hometown and can be seen hiking with her dogs or enjoying a delicious red chile breakfast burrito. Feminist Killjoys at Work

In this lecture I explore what we come to know about institutions from our efforts to transform them. I will draw especially on two chapters “The Feminist Killjoy as Philosopher” and “The Feminist Killjoy as Activist,” from my forthcoming The Feminist Killjoy Handbook. To be a feminist killjoy (or another kind of institutional killjoy) means not only confronting institutional problems, but challenging how institutions use our efforts to change them as evidence they have changed. The lecture explores how being feminist killjoys at work means recognising that the figure of the feminist killjoy can be appropriated and neutralised. Being feminist killjoys at work also requires finding other institutional killjoys, because the more we come up against, the more we need more.

Salsa Queen Zapata (yes, that’s her legal name) started selling salsas in 2014 as a single mother in order to provide for her 7 children. She started generating orders through Facebook and also selling her products a farmers’ markets. Since then, her company has quickly grown into the largest regional producer of fresh, gourmet salsas now sold in more than 1,000 stores across 25+ states. Salsa Queen immigrated to the US from Mexico with her family when she was a teenager and spoke no English. In 2018, she became a US citizen, which is when she legally changed her name to Salsa Queen. She is living proof that the American dream is still alive. One of her proudest accomplishments is helping her 20+ employees provide for their families, like she has done for hers.

Males also struggle with body image and disordered eating concerns. However, it isn't talked about as much but is still so important to combating diet culture. This class will cover the common areas in which males struggle with body image and how you can start to overcome these thoughts. These classes are put on by senior USU Dietetics students. A second class will be offered at 1pm.

Legacy of Val Day of Service: Fuller Center for Housing
Student Activities
Join the Christensen Office of Social Action and Sustainability as we lend a hand at the Fuller Center for Housing's thrift store. This organization's thrift store specializes in building materials-- think like a mash up of Home Depot and Goodwill. We will be sorting donations and tidying the store, making the products look great so that customers can find what they're looking for. Proceeds from the thrift store go to fund critical home repairs for Cache Valley community members with low incomes. The thrift store also diverts usable materials from the landfill! We plan to be indoors, but there's a chance that some tasks will take place outside, so dress for the weather. Close-toed shoes are a good option, since donations can be sharp or heavy. Optional car pool will leave from the black lot (just east of the Legacy Fields, look for someone holding a USU flag).

Balsa Bridge Testing (ASCE)
Student Activities
Students will be able to test their bridge-building skills by building a bridge with Balsa wood and testing it under pressure. Students can get the materials packet with instructions on how to build the bridge from the CEE Offices on the Second Floor of the Engineering Lab early in the week. After students have time during the week to build their bridges, they can bring completed bridges to the Atrium to be tested. Bridge packets will also be available for pick-up the week prior.

Welcome to Scenario B: Lessons in survival from our national parks. My presentation will highlight three projects spanning my 30-year career in the National Park Service. Each project involves aspects of indigenous knowledge, science, and rational planning (endangered species management in Hawaii, river restoration at Olympic National Park, and subsistence management national parks in the Arctic region. I'll highlight the resulting exigent questions of policy and federal land management that are driven by our rapidly changing climate. I'll close with personal observations and lessons learned.

Concerts are part of the band large ensemble curriculum. As capstone events, they typically occur twice per semester. Students are required to participate in these events as a large part of their grades, and these concerts are the culmination of several weeks of classroom rehearsals. Powder Mountain Ski Day

Come join us for a day of skiing/snowboarding at Powder Mountain resort. We will meet up at Outdoor Programs, load up our ski/snowboard gear, and head to Powder Mountain to burn some turns. All riding abilities are welcome as there is terrain for everyone. Trip cost includes transportation and Powder Mountain lift ticket. Discounted ski rentals are available for an additional $10. This trip does not include ski or snowboard instruction. If you would like a lesson, you can contact Powder Mountain ski school. Participants must be registered and travel to and from Powder Mountain with Outdoor Programs to be eligible for the discount lift ticket.
