Alumni Exhibition Tiana Godfrey and Tiny Houses

Exhibition

The opening exhibition of the academic year features paintings created by Art+Design BFA alumni Tiana Godfrey along with Tiny Houses created by students in the Interior Architecture and Design Program. The Tiny Houses assignment is a component of the Architectural Graphics and CADD courses, and the project outline is simple: design a small residence for two people, approximately 500 sqft per level. The residence must have more than one level, be built in Utah, and meet all residential building codes. The students create presentation drawings, a three-dimensional model, set of construction documents, and interior and exterior renderings of their custom design.

Communitas Lecture Series Reno Leplat-Torti

Arts/Entertainment

Reno Leplat-Torti, born in Marseille, France, in 1984, is a silkscreen printer, graphic designer, comic strip author, documentary filmmaker and collector. After training in graphic design, he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes, where he founded the independent publishing house Nunu. At the same time, fifteen years ago, he discovered the art of paños while surfing the Internet in search of small objects made in closed environments. Struck by the power of the subject and the form, he contacted the families of American prisoners, then the prisoners by snail mail, and today has a collection of over 800 handkerchiefs exhibited in numerous galleries and museums. After founding his own gallery in the south of France, he is now curator of a museum with moving walls.

Come learn about Rakes and Shovels Volunteer Opportunities! Provide free leaf-raking and snow-shoveling services for senior citizens and community members with disabilities. Register yourself, your roommates/household, or your organization to be volunteers! After registering, you will be matched with a resident who has requested help. If you feel like raking leaves, we're expecting you to find a group who can assist you (unless you like raking by yourself). The COSAS has rakes for check out in TSC 316A. If you feel like shoveling snow, you're signing up for a commitment to a resident for the duration of the snowy season. We will spend Friday and Saturday nights around the fire and raft the thrilling rapids of the Alpine section of the Snake River. Participants must be able to swim. We are heading up to the Snake River near Jackson Wyoming for a weekend of rafting and camping. We will spend Friday and Saturday nights around the fire and raft the thrilling rapids of the Alpine section of the Snake River. Participants must be able to swim. Trip cost includes food, transportation, permit fees, rafting equipment, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad and student leadership.

World Languages Film Festival Screening: Black Orpheus

The World Languages Film Festival presents a screening of Black Orpheus (1959) in Portuguese with English subtitles.

Set in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, this retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth blends Greek tragedy with Brazilian culture. Orfeu, a trolley driver, falls in love with Eurydice, but their romance is doomed by fate. The film is renowned for its vibrant music, dance, and tragic love story.

542 Million Years in a Flash: Eastern Utah’s Geologic Foundation

John McPhee once described rocks as “…books. They have a different vocabulary, a different alphabet, but you learn how to read them.” In this talk, we will read that story from places like the Book Cliffs, the San Rafael Swell, the Colorado Plateau, and more, to understand the ancient geologic foundation of eastern Utah.

Science Unwrapped - How Do We Learn and How Should We Teach?

Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science. Learning scientist Hillary Swanson, assistant professor in USU's Department of Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences, presents "How Do We Learn and How Should We Teach?" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU campus, Logan. Admission is free. Refreshments and hands-on learning activities follow Dr. Swanson's talk. Talk Description: "The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking,” said celebrated physicist Albert Einstein. It’s a favorite quote of learning scientist Hillary Swanson, who explores how engaging in scientific practices helps students refine common sense and everyday thinking into scientific understanding. Collaborating with USU physicists and computer scientists, along with Cache County teachers, Dr. Swanson designs classroom science activities that help students transform daydreams into big ideas. Dr. Swanson's talk is part of Science Unwrapped's Fall 2024 "Joining Forces" series.

Natural Resources Field Days 2024

Welcome to another exciting Natural Resources Field Days! We are excited to engage the cache valley 4th grade students in understanding the Water, Soils, Plants, and Wildlife of the Logan River watershed ecosystem. Students and their teachers spend the day at Spring Hollow Campground on the Cache National Forest, rotating through four stations and learning about wildlife, soils, plants, and water quality. We have approximately 2,000-2,500 students participate each year!

We will spend our days exploring and climbing some of the amazing routes in the City and our evenings around the camp fire. The opening exhibition of the academic year features paintings created by Art+Design BFA alumni Tiana Godfrey along with Tiny Houses created by students in the Interior Architecture and Design Program. The Tiny Houses assignment is a component of the Architectural Graphics and CADD courses, and the project outline is simple: design a small residence for two people, approximately 500 sqft per level. The residence must have more than one level, be built in Utah, and meet all residential building codes. The students create presentation drawings, a three-dimensional model, set of construction documents, and interior and exterior renderings of their custom design.

Natural Resources Field Days 2024

Welcome to another exciting Natural Resources Field Days! We are excited to engage the cache valley 4th grade students in understanding the Water, Soils, Plants, and Wildlife of the Logan River watershed ecosystem. Students and their teachers spend the day at Spring Hollow Campground on the Cache National Forest, rotating through four stations and learning about wildlife, soils, plants, and water quality. We have approximately 2,000-2,500 students participate each year!

Logan Canyon Rock Climbing

Come spend a few hours rock climbing up in Logan Canyon. We will meet at the OP and drive up the canyon to experience some of the many climbs right in our campus backyard. Research Lecture with Andrea Baldwin

Lecture/Readings

In her 2022 book, A Decolonial Black Feminist Theory of Reading and Shade: Feeling the University, Andrea Baldwin uses Black and decolonial feminist theorizing along with a queer of color critique to examine the university as an affective space. This space often causes marginalized and minoritized individuals to feel out of place and out of time. Baldwin developed the concept of “Shad(e)y theoretics” to encapsulate this idea.In this presentation, Baldwin builds on her theorizing to offer insights into the current moment in US politics. She explores the seemingly easy cooptation and, in some cases, cooperation of university administration in erasing marginalized and minoritized communities and their scholarship. While this erasure is not unexpected from a decolonial perspective, it remains deeply painful. Using indigenous feminist and Black feminist ecological thought, Baldwin provides thoughts on how to navigate the current epistemic and affective violence experienced by Black, brown, indigenous, and queer scholars in the US academy.

We’re thrilled to open our season with the world premiere of "Arboreal," a new work written for the Fry Street Quartet by celebrated composer Laura Kaminsky. Thirteen years and over 60 performances ago, Kaminsky composed the string quartet "Rising Tide" for the FSQ, anchoring their multi-disciplinary project on global sustainability titled "Rising Tide: The Crossroads Project." In this new work, Kaminsky delves into a sonic exploration of trees — their character, processes, beauty and the vital role they play in sustaining life on Earth. This evocative piece promises to be a powerful and moving experience, setting the tone for a season that reflects on our relationship with the natural world.

Alumni Exhibition Tiana Godfrey and Tiny Houses

The opening exhibition of the academic year features paintings created by Art+Design BFA alumni Tiana Godfrey along with Tiny Houses created by students in the Interior Architecture and Design Program. The Tiny Houses assignment is a component of the Architectural Graphics and CADD courses, and the project outline is simple: design a small residence for two people, approximately 500 sqft per level. The residence must have more than one level, be built in Utah, and meet all residential building codes. The students create presentation drawings, a three-dimensional model, set of construction documents, and interior and exterior renderings of their custom design.

In a country where trust is at an all-time low and polarization at an all-time high, is everything a legend? Using examples of contemporary or “urban” legends from across the US, Tom Mould, Professor of Anthropology and Folklore (Butler University), explores new approaches to legend research that help us navigate our current landscape of fake news, conspiracy theories, and echo chambers. In the process, Professor Mould upends some long held beliefs about what contemporary legends are, what they do, and what they can tell us about ourselves and the polarized world we live in.

From Propagation to Planning, How Restorative One Health Design Approaches Can Scale Site Based Interventions to Regional Scale Solutions MASS Design Group was founded on the understanding that design has a critical role to play in supporting communities to confront history, shape new narratives, collectively heal and project new possibilities for the future. In the face of a changing climate and rapid rates of biodiversity loss, holistic place based solutions are needed that cross disciplinary boundaries and catalyze action. Through our One Health work we have explored how restorative design approaches can scale from site based applications to regional scale solutions. This session will highlight these possibilities and discuss how collaborative partnerships can expand design approaches towards research based methodologies, sustainability, community benefit, and resilience.

The Berryman Institute is sponsoring a field trip to join Sageland Collaborative for a day in the field building BDAs (Beaver Dam Analogs). All undergraduate students are welcome to join this field trip for a fun day of hands-on learning!

Get ready to SWEAT! We're hosting the 3rd annual Sweat Day on September 28th. Starting in the MAC Gym with a warmup and group picture, you are then given a schedule for all the different group fitness classes that will be offered during the event - rotating every 45 minutes. Registration gives each participant a Sweat Day t-shirt, free snacks, and admission into all classes for the event. Stay for the whole event or pick a few to go to.
