We are heading down south near Moab to spend a long weekend rock climbing the beautiful sandstone desert walls. At night we will relax at the campground and enjoy the evenings by the fire. Trip cost includes sales tax, food, transportation, climbing equipment, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent and student leadership.

We are heading down south to hike and bike the world renown desert red rock in the Moab area. We will spend the weekend exploring some of the amazing mountain biking trails while camping near Moab. Participants must be in good physical condition and prepared for moderate to strenuous biking in a desert environment. No prior experience necessary, beginners are most welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mountain bike (in good working condition) or a rental is available from the OP for no additional cost. Sizes and quantities are limited. Trip cost includes sales tax, mountain bike (if needed), food, transportation, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent and student leadership.

NEHMA highlights this tradition by creating a large ofrenda (offering table) in the lobby of the museum. On display are calaveras (decorated skulls), photos, food, candles, and marigold flowers to represent different kinds of ofrendas. People are welcome to dedicate a small portion of that ofrenda to someone they lost by writing their name on the ofrenda wall. Come visit the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art and our Día de Los Muertos ofrenda!

According to the Harvard Business Review article How to Become More Comfortable with Change, “too many of us have the mindset that ‘change is temporary.’ When you see something as temporary, you tend to cope with it instead of accept it — and if you don’t learn how to accept, embrace, and work through your discomfort in unfamiliar situations, you will inevitably find it difficult to progress in the rapidly evolving world of work.” The goal is to learn how to manage our own unique response to change and embrace it. We will be picking pears and peppers! We'll be gleaning at two locations tomorrow and plan to spend about an hour at each. We will go over fruit and harvest specifics at the site as a group. “I am interested in population ecology and the evolution of ecological interactions. I have spent much of my career thinking about diet breadth and host shifts in herbivorous insects, especially in Lycaeides butterflies. In recent years, more of my attention has gone to questions of global change and monitoring butterflies at long term study sites that we maintain in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.” There will be a catered social in the BNR Atrium (just outside BNR 102) following Wednesday’s seminar on October 23 at 5:00 pm. While most people first learned of the creature known as Slender Man in 2014 in the wake of a gruesome attempted murder in Waukesha, Wisconsin, many fans and creators of the online genre known as "creepypasta" had already been familiar with him for years. Blending the tropes of folk legend and literary horror, creepypasta is a collaborative, hybrid genre that provides an entirely new outlet for scaring ourselves silly. USU Forestry Club: Firewood Cut

Come learn how to use a chainsaw!
It's time for our annual firewood cut! Every year we go up the school forest to cut firewood to sell as a fundraiser and teach you all how the basics of using chainsaws. We will be cutting firewood October 26. We will be meeting at 7:45 a.m. in the NR parking lot!
You need to bring: closed toe shoes (sturdy boots are suggested) - this is required to use a chainsaw, a long sleeve shirt - also required, work gloves if you have them, layers for the cold, and snacks + water

Hansen Life Sciences Retreat

USU's 2024 Hansen Life Sciences Retreat is open to all USU undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, faculty and staff, from varied disciplines, involved in the study of biological processes at the molecular level. The Friday evening, Oct. 25 keynote retreat speaker is University of Utah biochemist and data visualization expert Janet Iwasa, who says “her broad goal is to create accurate and compelling molecular and cellular visualizations that will support research, learning and scientific communication.” She speaks at 5 pm in ESLC 130 on USU's Logan campus. The retreat continues Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with research presentations, a poster session and career networking, at the Larry W. and Lindi Miller Champion’s Club at West Stadium Center of the Maverick Stadium, 880 E. 1000 North, on USU’s Logan Campus. Registration for the full retreat (Friday and Saturday) is $20 per person, and includes appetizers on Friday; breakfast and lunch on Saturday and a retreat shirt. Participants may submit a poster abstract, and should register and request their shirt size by Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024. chem.usu.edu

Provide free leaf-raking and snow-shoveling services for senior citizens and community members with disabilities. Register yourself, your roommates/household, or your organization to be volunteers! After registering, you will be matched with a resident who has requested help. If you feel like raking leaves, we're expecting you to find a group who can assist you (unless you like raking by yourself). The COSAS has rakes for check out in TSC 316A. If you feel like shoveling snow, you're signing up for a commitment to a resident for the duration of the snowy season. Your matched resident will have your name and phone number on a card, and they will call you when they need help this winter. Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration of life and death that connects family members and allows many to grow closer with their loved ones. NEHMA highlights this tradition by creating a large ofrenda (offering table) in the lobby of the museum. On display are calaveras (decorated skulls), photos, food, candles, and marigold flowers to represent different kinds of ofrendas. People are welcome to dedicate a small portion of that ofrenda to someone they lost by writing their name on the ofrenda wall. Come visit the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art and our Día de Los Muertos ofrenda!
Monster Concert 2024: Monster Goes Galactic

Over 200 young pianists throughout Cache Valley and USU piano majors will come together to play music on over 18 pianos in the beautiful Daines Concert Hall. This recital invites you to explore the rich and varied soundscapes of 20th-century music for clarinet and piano through the works of Brenno Blauth, Luciano Berio, Bohuslav Martinu, Leonard Bernstein, and Carlos Guastavino. Each composer shaped the musical landscape of their time, merging tradition with innovation and creating works that continue to resonate with modern audiences.
From Blauth’s warm melody textures, Berio’s bold experimentation, and Martinu’s witty charm to Bernstein’s dynamic fusion of classical and jazz and Guastavino’s lyrical and elegant folkloric warmth, join us for an evening where avant-garde meets neoclassicism, popular mingles with classical forms, and tradition and modernity intersect in an exhilarating celebration of 20th-century music.
