The BE Department's Seminar Series Speaker, Dr. Tara Deans, Assistant Professor at University of Utah, will present: "Engineering Stem Cells to Create Novel Delivery Vehicles".

February 10th at 12:30 pm in ENGR 326

Synthetic biology has transformed how cells can be reprogrammed, providing a means to reliably and predictably control cell behavior with the assembly of genetic parts into more complex gene circuits. Using approaches and tools in synthetic biology, we are programming stem cells with novel genetic tools to control genes and pathways that result in changes in stem cell fate decisions, in addition to reprogramming terminally differentiated cells to function as unique therapeutic diagnostic and delivery vehicles.

A meet and greet with Dr. Deans will be held immediately following the seminar in ENGR 326.

Sky Above, Earth Below: A History of Western Landscape Photography

“Sky Above, Earth Below” traces the development of western landscape photography from the late 19th century to the 21st century, starting with early American photographers like Myra Albert Wiggins, Edward Curtis, and Karl Struss and concluding with contemporary photographers like Barry Andersen, Kimberly Anderson, Karalee Kuchar, and Charlotte Trolinger. The exhibition includes work from members of the Seattle Camera Club, FSA (Farm Security Administration), f/64 (a group of 20th-century photographers known for precise exposures and depiction of natural forms) and contemporary photography portfolios such as American Roads (printed in 1981), The Museum Project (printed in 2015), and DEMARCATION (printed in 2018).

Latinx from the NEHMA Collection

Latinx works of art represent a growing part of the NEHMA collection and reflect a significant influence in Western American art. New acquisitions by Yolanda Gonzalez, Leo Limón, Paul Sierra and Eloy Torrez will be featured in Latinx from the Collection as well as a grouping of paños, artworks created on handkerchiefs by artists incarcerated in Texas penitentiaries.

Latinx from the NEHMA Collection is co-curated by USU Art History Professor Alvaro Ibarra and NEHMA Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Bolton Colburn.

Haikus, Modernism and Stanton MacDonald-Wright

Exhibition

Stanton MacDonald-Wright’s “Haiga Portfolio” (1965-1966) blends Eastern and Western influences, pairing vibrant modernist paintings with haikus written by some of Japan’s most influential poets.
The term “haiga” refers to a style of Japanese painting by haiku poets, whose poems are known for their brevity and simplicity. Each of the ten prints that compose the “Haiga Portfolio” have a corresponding haiku.
The “Haiga Portfolio” exemplifies the 20th century modernist movement Synchromism, cofounded in 1913 by MacDonald-Wright and Morgan Russell. The movement sought to arrange color in the same way that sound is composed in music and is considered the first American avant-guard movement to be accepted internationally. Seventy-five years old at the time of the portfolio’s creation, MacDonald-Wright employed the use of energetic, swirling shapes coupled with dense, vivid colors orchestrated in the modernist style and the rhythm of Synchromism.

Particle & Wave: PaperClay Illuminated

"Particle & Wave" features forty-five artists from across the world who incorporate paper pulp and organic fibers into their clay. The exhibition explores innovation, creativity and connection by sharing the breadth of work being created by artists spanning five continents who choose paperclay for its adaptability, tensile strength, translucency, and ecological and sustainable characteristics.

"Particle & Wave: PaperClay Illuminated" is organized by The International Paper Clay Exhibition Project, and curated by Peter Held.

Thomas Campbell is an interdisciplinary media maestro who creates eloquent and romantic narratives about the fringes of contemporary American culture in a variety of formats, including sculpture, ceramics, music, printmaking, painting, photography, drawing, and film.

A two-part, two-gallery sequence, "Lint Basket Supremeo" (a multi-medium survey) and "Unii Ciøn Yyikæ" (new works) give a sense of Campbell’s creative output over the last ten years leading up to today, including new works created during an artist residency at Utah State University’s Department of Art & Design last fall.

Claire Roberts is the Chief Executive Officer of Larada Sciences and does business as Lice Clinics of America, which operates more than 300 franchised clinics in 34 countries. Claire specializes in launching early-stage ventures, leading them through high growth and positioning them to reach their high-performance potential. She has a diverse industry background as a CEO covering manufacturing and distribution, technology, new media, and medical informatics. In addition to her private sector CEO experience, Claire was a key player in the launch of BioCrossroads, the Indiana life sciences economic development organization. She most recently served as CEO of ArbiterSports, an NCAA-backed SaaS venture headquartered in Sandy, Utah. Claire heralds from Seattle, Washington, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington and is an alumnae of Deloitte and Touche.

Feb 13th is our second Informed Citizen Series. Join us for a panel on US-Iran Relations. We have special guests Bahram Baktiari, Executive Director of the Baskerville Institute and Matt Berrett, former assistant director of the CIA and co-founder of the Center for Anticipatory Intelligence. The discussion will be moderated by Kerry Bringhurst of Utah Public Radio. If you would like to solicit a question to the panelists on US-Iran Relations, please email katie.roberts@usu.edu. NEHMA Presents PBS Utah's "Book Club in a Box" - Theme: Civil Rights

“Book Club in a Box” pairs a novel with a PBS Utah documentary on different topics each month. Every second Thursday of the month, NEHMA hosts a discussion of the book and film with local scholars and faculty, also including a discussion of a related artwork from the museum’s collection.

In honor of Black History Month, February's book club will focus on The Civil Rights Movement and explore the fight for social justice and racial equality in the United States.

This is the Valentine's Day event of the year! Treat yourself to an evening of dining and dancing at the only dance hall remaining in Utah with a sprung dance floor. Music is provided by the USU Jazz Orchestra and USU Jazz Ensemble big bands, led by Jon Gudmundson and Greg Wheeler, featuring a number of highly talented singers from Utah State. Three nights only: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 13, 14 & 15. Thursday is dancing only, Friday & Saturday offers the option of a delicious meal prepared by Cache Valley's own Firehouse Pizza. Proceeds from the event will go toward the Larry Smith Jazz Scholarship.

Third Annual Paper & Clay Exhibition

Paper & Clay is a national juried exhibit that showcases exceptional student work from across the country. The exhibition is open to all current BFA & MFA printmaking and ceramic students and provides them an opportunity to compete and exhibit in a professional space. This year's show includes 57 works from 42 different institutions across the country. The reception for the exhibit is February 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Impact Commons behind the gallery.

Thomas Campbell: Lint Basket Supremeo and Unii Ciøn Yyikæ

Exhibition

Thomas Campbell is an interdisciplinary media maestro who creates eloquent and romantic narratives about the fringes of contemporary American culture in a variety of formats, including sculpture, ceramics, music, printmaking, painting, photography, drawing, and film.

A two-part, two-gallery sequence, "Lint Basket Supremeo" (a multi-medium survey) and "Unii Ciøn Yyikæ" (new works) give a sense of Campbell’s creative output over the last ten years leading up to today, including new works created during an artist residency at Utah State University’s Department of Art & Design last fall.

Particle & Wave: PaperClay Illuminated

Exhibition

"Particle & Wave" features forty-five artists from across the world who incorporate paper pulp and organic fibers into their clay. The exhibition explores innovation, creativity and connection by sharing the breadth of work being created by artists spanning five continents who choose paperclay for its adaptability, tensile strength, translucency, and ecological and sustainable characteristics.

"Particle & Wave: PaperClay Illuminated" is organized by The International Paper Clay Exhibition Project, and curated by Peter Held.

Sky Above, Earth Below: A History of Western Landscape Photography

“Sky Above, Earth Below” traces the development of western landscape photography from the late 19th century to the 21st century, starting with early American photographers like Myra Albert Wiggins, Edward Curtis, and Karl Struss and concluding with contemporary photographers like Barry Andersen, Kimberly Anderson, Karalee Kuchar, and Charlotte Trolinger. The exhibition includes work from members of the Seattle Camera Club, FSA (Farm Security Administration), f/64 (a group of 20th-century photographers known for precise exposures and depiction of natural forms) and contemporary photography portfolios such as American Roads (printed in 1981), The Museum Project (printed in 2015), and DEMARCATION (printed in 2018).

Haikus, Modernism and Stanton MacDonald-Wright

Stanton MacDonald-Wright’s “Haiga Portfolio” (1965-1966) blends Eastern and Western influences, pairing vibrant modernist paintings with haikus written by some of Japan’s most influential poets.
The term “haiga” refers to a style of Japanese painting by haiku poets, whose poems are known for their brevity and simplicity. Each of the ten prints that compose the “Haiga Portfolio” have a corresponding haiku.
The “Haiga Portfolio” exemplifies the 20th century modernist movement Synchromism, cofounded in 1913 by MacDonald-Wright and Morgan Russell. The movement sought to arrange color in the same way that sound is composed in music and is considered the first American avant-guard movement to be accepted internationally. Seventy-five years old at the time of the portfolio’s creation, MacDonald-Wright employed the use of energetic, swirling shapes coupled with dense, vivid colors orchestrated in the modernist style and the rhythm of Synchromism.

Latinx from the NEHMA Collection

Latinx works of art represent a growing part of the NEHMA collection and reflect a significant influence in Western American art. New acquisitions by Yolanda Gonzalez, Leo Limón, Paul Sierra and Eloy Torrez will be featured in Latinx from the Collection as well as a grouping of paños, artworks created on handkerchiefs by artists incarcerated in Texas penitentiaries.

Latinx from the NEHMA Collection is co-curated by USU Art History Professor Alvaro Ibarra and NEHMA Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Bolton Colburn.

Abstract: What unites all of the things listed in this title? You'll have to show up to find out. This work is based on the concept of tradeoffs, a central idea in ecology and evolutionary biology. For example, the evolution of life history strategies is often framed in the language of tradeoffs. Behavioural ecologists may be interested in the tradeoffs inherent in the allocation of time (e.g., between foraging and vigilance) and resources (e.g., how much energy to invest in a reproductive attempt). Conservationists and wildlife managers must also consider tradeoffs between cost, political pressures, and management goals. Stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) is a powerful and flexible method for exploring optimal tradeoffs and has been used in a broad range of applications. In the last 30 years, concomitant with the development of SDP methods in ecology and evolution, matrix methods have emerged as another powerful tool for analyzing ecological systems.

Keynote speaker, Emma Houston, Director of Diversity & Inclusion for the Salt Lake County’s Mayor’s Office of Diversity Affairs will share the history and importance of women in Utah. Learn about the woman’s suffrage movement and register to vote. We will also screen “Iron Jawed Angels”, a docudrama about a fiery American suffragette who lights a fire under the older women’s leaders in Washington D.C.
