Blind Hollow Yurt Backcountry Skiing/Boarding
Recreation
We are heading up to the Blind Hollow yurt to spend the weekend enjoying the Bear River backcountry. We will explore some of the fantastic riding terrain around Blind Hollow and spend the evenings around the fire in the comforts of the OP's yurt. Prior backcountry experience is recommended and participants must be expert/advanced riders (able to comfortably ride black diamond western resort terrain). Participants must also be in good physical condition and prepared for strenuous uphill hiking. Winter backcountry travel equipment(Alpine Touring, Telemark, Splitboard) is required and available to rent from the OP for a nominal fee. NO SNOWSHOES. All participants must abide by OP and University Policies.

AIARE II Avalanche Course

The AIARE 2 is a three-day/24-hour course that provides backcountry travelers an opportunity to advance their decision making skills in more complicated situations such as being a leader within a small travel group, traveling in more complicated terrain, and/or developing a travel plan where online resources are scarce. The AIARE 2 builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the AIARE 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors. Students will describe and discuss weather, snowpack and avalanche processes, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain. Skis or splitboard with skins and touring bindings are required for this course. SNOWSHOES ARE NOT ALLOWED! Additionally, an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe are required. These items are available to rent from the USU Outdoor Programs. Make sure to reserve equipment in advance as quantities are limited. Participants must be comfortable traveling in blue to black resort terrain on skis or splitboard. This course is not recommended for beginners.

Trans/Nonbinary Allies on Campus aims to increase awareness and understanding of our trans/nonbinary community and further understand specific trans/nonbinary issues while training participants to stand with, and advocate for trans/nonbinary individuals. Entrepreneur Leadership Series: Emily Peterson

Emily Peterson is the CEO and co-founder of Saranoni Luxury Blankets. Emily and her husband, Nathan, started Saranoni to make money to allow her daughter to have surgery to correct the miroctia – a congenital condition that caused her to be born without a fully developed outer ear. Emily and Nathan worked on their business as they were raising three small children. As they created gift baskets that included clothes, shoes, and jewelry, they realized that people loved the baby blankets the most!
As their company grew, they knew they wanted to give back to less fortunate families throughout the world. Through their social give-back initiative, Saranoni Cares, they have blessed many families in West Africa, Syria, and Cambodia.
In 2022, Nathan tragically passed away from stage 4 Gliboblastoma Mulitforme. Through this difficult time, Emily and her family have continued to grow the legacy of Saranoni. Emily echo’s Nathan’s passion for service and connection and is dedicated to growing Sara- noni. Her mission is to bring comfort, warmth, and connection to individuals and families.

A partnership of USU's Quinney College of Natural Resources Department of Watershed Sciences and Department of Environment and Society, the Huntsman School of Business Department of Economics and Finance, the College of Humanities and Social Science's Community and Natural Resources Institute, and the President's Office.
Oil and natural gas, wood products, minerals and other resources from the earth have fueled historic growth throughout the world, generated jobs and offered communities a wealth of economic activity. Modern life is literally built on these resources, and continues to rely on them for its upward economic trajectory. But resources have finite limits and our resources and economic activities interact in very complex ways. This symposium is designed to enable the USU community explore these cross-disciplinary topics, with the goal of building a compelling vision for a way that economics and environmental sustainability can co-evolve.

Collaborative Design, Development & Financing of Commercial Property About the Lecture: Exploring a path from LAEP to developing and financing commercial property, informed by the need to collaborate with the participants that can take a project from design to a successful reality. Speaker Bio: Kurt Altvater is the Senior Vice President of the National Loan and Portfolio Sale Advisors of CBRE Capital Markets. He has over forty years of experience in commercial real estate and participated in the placement of more than $23 billion in loan and property sales at CBRE. Kurt has been a leading sales professional and received CRBE’s National Teamwork Award multiple times. After graduating from Utah State, Kurt spent two years as an architectural designer and planner in San Francisco. The turning point in his career happened while working for John Portman, the author of “Architect as Developer.” There Kurt learned the importance of balancing aesthetic as well as economic goals. Backcountry Ski Basics

Come learn the basics of backcountry skiing/boarding with us! We’ll spend an evening in the classroom covering how to use alpine touring equipment/splitboard to get up and down the mountain, the basics of avalanche safety equipment, how to locate and interpret an avalanche danger forecast, and route planning. The following day we’ll head out into the Bear River mountains for a full day on our touring equipment. In addition to getting some backcountry turns, we’ll cover the basics of avalanche rescue, snowpack evaluation, and terrain management. This trip is geared toward resort skiers/boarders who want to learn how to venture into the backcountry safely. No backcountry experience is required but you must be comfortable riding black diamond terrain. Participants must be prepared for strenuous hiking and a full day in winter conditions, snow or shine. Backcountry touring skis or splitboard with skins are required and available to rent for an additional $10+ tax for this trip. NO SNOWSHOES. Trip cost includes transportation, avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe, and student leadership.
