Styled after the opulence of the 18th century, this exhibition promises to be a fitting conclusion to Nancy's legacy of bringing historical fashion to life. Correspondence Networks in Early Modern Europe: Jesuits in Action
Lecture/Readings
Before the development of regular modern postal systems (not to mention emails), letter-writing could be a precarious method of communication. There was plenty of opportunity for letters to get lost or intercepted or arrive too late and cause confusion, conflict, or misunderstanding. In the sixteenth century, the Society of Jesus, the largest of the Catholic religious orders, was already a worldwide organization operating in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. The global reach of the Society meant that it had to develop an efficient correspondence network, with its central hub in Rome. In this talk, Prof. Houliston will give examples from the exchange of letters between the superior general of the Society, Claudio Acquaviva, and the leader of the English Jesuits during the reign of Elizabeth I, Robert Persons.

The Science Behind the Art of Conversation — Blue Plate Research
Lecture/Readings
Conversations are integral to our daily lives, serving as the foundation for building and maintaining relationships, conducting work, raising children, accessing services, engaging in our communities, and more. While the act of having a conversation may seem straightforward, it involves a complex coordination of behaviors, requiring communication partners to make constant adaptations to understand one another and ensure a smooth interaction.
At the upcoming Blue Plate Research event, titled 'The Science Behind the Art of Conversation,' Dr. Stephanie Borrie will explore how successful conversations emerge from the collaborative efforts of those engaged in them. She will delve into her research into the impact of neurological conditions such as stroke, brain injury, and Parkinson’s disease on conversation, and will discuss strategies for how communication partners can work together to improve conversational success.
We invite you to join this insightful session on Thursday, March 21st, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gallivan Hall in downtown Salt Lake City. It's an opportunity to understand the science that informs the subtleties of our daily interactions and to enhance the way we connect with others.

Moab Wilderness First Responder Course
Information/Orientation
The Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course is the standard level of medical training for professional outdoor recreation industry field staff that work multi-day, overnight trips in remote environments, military, technical rescue personnel, and those working in disaster relief. The DMM comprehensive, contextual and practical curriculum has gained popularity among outdoor enthusiasts, endurance athletes, and adventure travelers who push their boundaries in remote areas with limited resources, unreliable communication, and the potential for delayed or self-rescue. Course participants will develop strong patient assessment skills, adopt treatment tools to stabilize life-threatening conditions, and learn how to provide extended patient care in austere environments. Most importantly, this training will prepare individuals to prevent many environmental illnesses and proactively manage pre-existing conditions in the field. Individuals will also develop the confidence to professionally call in a rescue in the event of a backcountry emergency and manage the evacuation of a medical or trauma patient. Dressed in White
Exhibition
Prepare to step into the grand finale of a series of exquisite exhibitions as we present "Dressed in White," curated by the esteemed award-winning Nancy Hills.
This captivating showcase marks the culmination of Nancy's illustrious journey, which has seen numerous exhibitions and tours across the United States and England, guided by the insightful retired curator Althea MacKenzie. Styled after the opulence of the 18th century, this exhibition promises to be a fitting conclusion to Nancy's legacy of bringing historical fashion to life. Following in the footsteps of Janet Arnold to admiring styles-of-the-time garments in London, Nancy has meticulously crafted 35–40 dresses spanning from the 1700s to 1954. Among them, Mary Bufton's iconic wedding gown, gracing the cover of Nancy's forthcoming book, awaits to mesmerize audiences. Each dress, meticulously researched and recreated by Nancy (and her dedicated students under Nancy’s direction), serves as a testament to the enduring allure of fashion history.
Join us for this unforgettable journey through time, where Nancy's passion and expertise shine in every intricate detail of "Dressed in White."
Exhibition is FREE and open to the public! Exhibition times are 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday through Friday in the Tippetts & Eccles Galleries, March 18–27.
