Snake River Rafting and Camping
Recreation
We are heading up to the Snake River near Jackson Wyoming for a weekend of rafting and camping. We will spend Friday and Saturday nights around the fire and raft the thrilling rapids of the Alpine section of the Snake River. Participants must be able to swim. Trip cost includes food, transportation, permit fees, rafting equipment, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad and student leadership.

The Tiny Houses assignment is a component of the Architectural Graphics and CADD courses, and the project outline is simple: design a small residence for two people, approximately 500 sqft per level. The residence must have more than one level, be built in Utah, and meet all residential building codes. The students create presentation drawings, a three-dimensional model, set of construction documents, and interior and exterior renderings of their custom design.

The College of Humanities & Social Sciences Research Team invites CHaSS Faculty to a series of open houses this September to introduce you to our team and what services we offer, especially in regard to proposal development and internal funding mechanisms. The open houses will take place in MAIN 340 (and on Zoom for statewide faculty members) on: Sept 9th 11 am-12 pm Sept 17th 2 pm- 3 pm Sept 18th 4 pm- 5 pm These open houses will be a great opportunity for faculty to meet the research team and other researchers. The research team consists of Associate Dean for Research Julia M. Gossard; Barbara Warnes, grant proposal development support specialist; and Nicole Steinicke, proposal development specialist. The open houses will allow faculty time to share research ideas with the proposal development specialists, discuss funding opportunities both internally and externally, and schedule further meetings with individuals from the team to support your research agendas. World Languages Film Festival Screening: Black Orpheus

The World Languages Film Festival presents a screening of Black Orpheus (1959) in Portuguese with English subtitles.
Set in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, this retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth blends Greek tragedy with Brazilian culture. Orfeu, a trolley driver, falls in love with Eurydice, but their romance is doomed by fate. The film is renowned for its vibrant music, dance, and tragic love story.
Rating: Unrated (due to the age of the film)
The film contains some sensuality, mild violence, and themes of fate and tragedy.

542 Million Years in a Flash: Eastern Utah’s Geologic Foundation

John McPhee once described rocks as “…books. They have a different vocabulary, a different alphabet, but you learn how to read them.” In this talk, we will read that story from places like the Book Cliffs, the San Rafael Swell, the Colorado Plateau, and more, to understand the ancient geologic foundation of eastern Utah.
Part of USU Eastern's "From the Book Cliffs to Blanding: A Panoramic View of Eastern Utah," hear Geology Professor Evey Gannaway Dalton discuss the geologic history of the state.

9/11 Commemorative Stair Climb

Join the HURD for a commemorative stair climb in honor of 9/11 first responders. Participants will be assigned a fallen firefighter and learn about the gear worn by first responders as they climb the equivalent of 110 stories, symbolizing the height of the World Trade Center towers, and pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who responded on that day.

Science Unwrapped - How Do We Learn and How Should We Teach?

Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science. Learning scientist Hillary Swanson, assistant professor in USU's Department of Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences, presents "How Do We Learn and How Should We Teach?" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU campus, Logan. Admission is free. Refreshments and hands-on learning activities follow Dr. Swanson's talk. Talk Description: "The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking,” said celebrated physicist Albert Einstein. It’s a favorite quote of learning scientist Hillary Swanson, who explores how engaging in scientific practices helps students refine common sense and everyday thinking into scientific understanding. Collaborating with USU physicists and computer scientists, along with Cache County teachers, Dr. Swanson designs classroom science activities that help students transform daydreams into big ideas. Dr. Swanson's talk is part of Science Unwrapped's Fall 2024 "Joining Forces" series.
