Honors Book Lab Registration: The Missing Morningstar and Other Stories

Lecture/Readings

Registration is now open for an Honors Book Lab that will be held in-person on the Blanding campus. Honors Book Labs are faculty-led ungraded book groups that engage 4-5 students in cross-disciplinary conversation. sponsored by the Utah State University Honors Program. Students do not have to be currently enrolled in Honors to participate. This Honors Book Lab will meet weekly on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:00 p.m. between January 10 and January 31. Participating students will receive a copy of The Missing Morningstar and Other Stories by USU's own Stacie Shannon Denetsosie to keep. Synopsis: How do the places where you grew up shape the way you see the world? How do your relationships with family and friends make you who you are? What forces push or pull you out of your community and what draws you back? What do you do when it feels like other people have failed you? How do you make peace with your own mistakes and disappointments? How do you function in a society that feels like it's built to keep you down? The Missing Morningstar explores all these questions and more as it traces the lives of Dine individuals and families moving between Utah's cities and Navajo Nation.

Honors Book Labs are faculty-led ungraded book groups that engage 4-5 students in cross-disciplinary conversation, sponsored by the Utah State University Honors Program. Students do not have to be currently enrolled in Honors to participate. This Honors Book Lab will meet weekly on Tuesdays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. between January 16 and February 6. Participating students will receive a copy of Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot. Synopsis: Mailhot writes with a unique and unsettling voice as she recounts a troubled childhood, a tumultuous early motherhood, and her own mental health and identity in adulthood. Having survived a profoundly dysfunctional upbringing only to find herself hospitalized and facing a dual diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar II disorder, Mailhot writes her way out of trauma while simultaneously writing a memorial to her mother, a reconciliation with her father, and an elegy on the complexities of loving someone beneath the burden of shame. In finding her own voice, Mailhot shows us how to seize control of our own stories.

For the first week of spring semester, all group fitness classes will be free! We have a variety of classes ranging from SUP yoga and high fitness to dynamic conditioning and weightlifting. A full schedule can be found on campusrec.usu.edu under group fitness. Also don't want to commit to the full semester? We offer passes for just the first 8 weeks as well as the entire semester.

Evenings for Educators: Facing Fire - Using Art to Fire up Your Classroom

Join us for Facing Fire: Art, Wildlife, and the End of Nature in the New West. NEHMA is partnering with USU’s Science iSEE program to explore the science of  re in ecosystems, the permanent changes to matter from  re, and the artistic beauty of active  re lines and psychic burn zones from photography. Teaching Artist John Westenskow will lead participants in creating a unique clay project to  re up their artistic skills! Evenings for Educators is a free program dedicated to the professional development of elementary and secondary teachers across the state. Each Evening for Educators o ers a unique theme and agenda that connects art to core standards. Experience keynote speakers, hands-on workshops, networking opportunities, light refreshments, and free educational materials! Teachers who attend can earn three USBE relicensure points per evening or a USBE credit for completing five evenings and a field test.

It's free week for group fitness classes at Campus Recreation! Want to try classes before you buy it? Never done group fitness and want to know what it's about? For the first week of spring semester, all group fitness classes will be free! We have a variety of classes ranging from SUP yoga and high fitness to dynamic conditioning and weightlifting. A full schedule can be found on campusrec.usu.edu under group fitness. Also don't want to commit to the full semester? We offer passes for just the first 8 weeks as well as the entire semester.

Snowshoe Hike

Let's go walk on some snow! Come spend a few hours snowshoeing up Logan Canyon. We will explore one of the many winter trails in our big campus backyard. Trip cost includes snowshoe rental, transportation and student leadership.

Free and Open to All Wire Explorations: Please join us on January 13, 2024, to create an art project based on Ruth Asawa’s sculpture in the NEHMA lobby. Asawa uses malleable wire to create a continuous line that loops and crosses, resulting in a complex sculpture.
