Educational Background
Biography
Mike is from Logan. He earned his chemistry B.S. from USU in 2004, received his PhD at BYU in 2010, did postdoctoral work at CSU, and joined USU Uintah Basin in 2011.
Teaching Interests
Mike has an infectious passion for teaching that infuses his students with an enthusiasm for chemistry. Mike often says, "Teaching isn't just what I do. It's who I am." Mike's overlapping teaching and research interests include flipped learning, as well as embedding student-designed research projects into his undergraduate lab courses.
Research Interests
Mike's research interests center on developing new ways of teaching chemistry more effectively. These have grown to include flipped learning and embedding student-designed research projects into undergraduate lab courses. He currently has 13 peer-reviewed publications, books, or book chapters in these two areas.
Mike also runs a small synthetic chemistry research lab, which focuses on developing new reactions that can be used to synthesize medicines more efficiently. As such, he has developed total or partial syntheses of various biologically-active natural molecules, such as JBIR-94 and JBIR-125 (anti-cancer), boerhavia N (anti-inflammatory), 5'-methoxy[1,1'-biphenyl]-3,3',4-triol (anti-diabetic), and anti-diabetic paprazine derivatives.
