This USU's Year of the Women event will focus on women's empowerment in sports and promoting awareness of eating disorders among college students on the National Women in Sports Day (February 6). Our keynote speaker, Dr. Elizabeth Joy, is the Medial Director for Community Health, Health Promotion and Wellness, and Food & Nutrition at Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, UT. Dr. Joy has been a well-respected medical doctor specializing in sports medicine eating disorders and also a leading researcher of the Female Athlete Triad, physical activity promotion, and diabetes prevention.

44 Years Since the Termination of Executive Order 9066
Cultural
This is a FREE speaker event open to the public wanting to learn more about American History about Exec Order 9066.
Returning to Utah State University we invite alumnus Yukio Shimomura to speak about his experience living through Executive Order 9066. The social injustice and inequality the Japanese people had to face during this time period. This event will make you think about similar events in our world and society.
With the intent to protect the U.S. from all espionage and sabotage from the Japanese, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive order 9066 on February 19, 1942.
Yukio Shimomura, born in San Francisco, California was in grade school when World War II started. His family and himself were incarcerated and interned to a camp in San Bruno, CA and later to the camp near Delta, Utah. Soon after they relocated to Ogden, UT where he graduated high school. Served in the U.S. Army, attended Weber State University and Utah State University where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Manufacturing Engineering.
Yukio will be share his experiences that happened to his family, before, during, and after the war in relevance to today's events.

Shaking the Cage: The Artists' Gallery Opening Reception

The Artists' Gallery presents "Shaking the Cage," an exhibit in celebration of the suffrage movements in Utah and the Nation. This exhibit showcases the work of gallery artists as they explore historical and modern-day themes of freedom, equality, and non-discrimination. The night will feature Star Coulbrooke, Director of the USU Writing Center and Logan City Poet Laureate Emeritus, who will be reading a poem to mark the opening of the exhibit.

Invited as the Swenson Writer for 2020, poet Meg Day will be on campus to give a reading on Wednesday, March 25, at 11:30AM in Library 101. She will also give a master class at 2:30PM that same day and in the same room.
Meg Day is the author of Last Psalm at Sea Level (Barrow Street, 2014), winner of the Publishing Triangle’s Audre Lorde Award, and a finalist for the 2016 Kate Tufts Discovery Award. The 2015-2016 recipient of the Amy Lowell Poetry Travelling Scholarship and a 2013 recipient of an NEA Fellowship in Poetry, Day is Assistant Professor of English & Creative Writing at Franklin & Marshall College.

Psychosocial Issues Related to Pregnancy and Fertility for Women with Disabilities - Roxanna Nasseri Pebdani

Women with disabilities face many barriers to pregnancy and fertility, most of which are not physical. From society sending messages that women with disabilities are asexual to physicians not knowing how to handle the pregnancy of a woman with a disability, the obstacles can be plentiful. During this talk, Dr. Pebdani will address the structural and psychosocial barriers that women with disabilities face, and will identify methods to reduce or eliminate these barriers.
Dr. Roxanna Nasseri Pebdani is a Senior Lecturer and Course Director in the Discipline of Rehabilitation Counselling at the University of Sydney. She is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has authored or co-authored over 20 journal articles and book chapters and has conducted over thirty presentations at local, national, and international conferences. Dr. Pebdani’s research interests are in women's issues in disability, specifically pregnancy and fertility. Dr. Pebdani also conducts research on sexuality and disability.

Join us on April 16 for an interesting interview with published author and professor of history and religious studies at University of Utah, Colleen McDannell. McDannell will discuss female members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints view on the church’s culture since the end of polygamy. From suffrage to modern day blogging, hear McDannell’s research on feminist movements within the church after plural marriage was no longer practiced. This event is free and open to the public.

Each year at Founders Day, Utah State University celebrates the steadfast and visionary men and women who sacrificed to establish our great institution and honors those who today sacrifice to ensure a world of opportunity for future generations eager to achieve their hopes and dreams.
Old Main, affectionately remembered by succeeding generations of students and characterized by the bell tower, has been a distinctive icon of Utah State University for all who have walked its halls as students, faculty, or guests. The Old Main Society was established in 1967 to recognize those who have risen to the challenge of the founders and assisted the university through their private gifts. A Conversation About Civil Discourse With Brent Hill
Panel Discussion/Presentation | Aggies Think, Care, Act
Neil Abercrombie, USU vice president for government relations, will facilitate a conversation with Brent Hill, the Next Generation Program Director for the National Institute for Civil Discourse. Brent retired from the state legislature in 2020 after serving 19 years in the Idaho State Senate, 10 years as President Pro Tempore, the highest-ranking member of the Idaho State Senate. Brent is an Aggie who earned a bachelor's in accounting. He frequently contributes to newspapers and other publications and is the author of the book A Matter of Principle, which explores the fundamental ideals that guided America’s founders. A Conversation with George Herms
Arts/Entertainment
Please join us for a moderated conversation with George Herms led by Bolton Colburn. A reception will follow. George Herms is one of the last living beat generation artists. A rebel to the core, he still makes assemblage sculptures from the detritus of our culture's castoffs and waste. Herms have been active both in northern and southern California with the assemblage and beat movements since the 1960s and have worked and collaborated with luminary artists and poets like Wallace Berman, Bruce Conner, Michael McClure, and Diane di Prima.
