Moreover, as some scholars today argue, it's possible many Near Eastern converts in these early days of Islam didn't fully understand that it was not a form of Christianity and that they were effectively "changing" religions by endorsing Muhammad's religious views. Add to that the relatively low tax rates Moslems required of subject states, in strong contrast to the choking levels of tribute that attended inclusion in the Byzantine world, Islamic domination began to look very good to many. As a result, the Moslems had less trouble than most of their Medieval neighbors keeping rebellions down.
