Biography

Dr. Nathan Geer earned his doctorate at the University of Oregon and then spent four years in a postdoctoral position at Georgia Tech. He accepted a position at Utah State University in spring of 2008 and spent his first year of the appointment at the prestigious Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, Germany. Dr. Geer’s research interests lie in the area of quantum topology, which has applications in theoretical physics, specifically in quantum field theory. Dr. Geer has travelled extensively both nationally and internationally to work with world leaders in this area, holding several research appointments, including a French CNRS Directeur de Recherches position and a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Research Fellowship. He has been continuously funded by the National Science Foundation, first with a VIGRE postdoctoral fellowship, then subsequently with three full multi-year research grants from the Division of Mathematical Sciences and concurrently with a CAREER Grant.

Dr. Geer primarily teaches courses covering topology and abstract algebra.  He also enjoys teaching calculus regularly and is actively involved in enhancing the departments overall calculus instruction.   Dr. Geer was promoted from Assistant to Associate Professor in 2015.  He was named USU’s College of Science Researcher of the Year in 2014.   In his free time, he enjoys cooking (or more accurately eating) with friends, mountain biking and skiing.
