Men's lacrosse closes season with 12-7 victory over UVSC

In its final game of the fall season, the Utah State men's lacrosse club ended with a 12-7 victory over Utah Valley State College, Saturday at Tower Field.

With two quick goals from Kyle Fiat and Clint Carter, the Aggies got off to an early lead, giving them some confidence and forcing UVSC to play catch up the remainder of the match.

But with a 2-0 lead within the first few minutes, the game was far from over.

Following the quick goals, USU captain Thad Nicholls said the Aggies began playing a bit sloppily, giving UVSC the hope of coming back to win.

"When people showed up, they were a little reluctant to play because of the weather, but we got it together when we needed to," he said,

Most of the reason the Aggies played soppily was because of the transition from playing indoors to outdoors, Nicholls said, throwing off their passes and catches.

Despite the sloppiness, the Aggies maintained the lead, due to goals from six of their players.

Kyle Fiat led the crew with four goals, followed by Nicholls with three, and one a piece from Carter, Evan Nitchman, Micah Platte and Will Babcock.

Although the score was 12-7, the Aggies felt they controlled the majority of the game, allowing only one UVSC player to score a few garbage goals, Nicholls said.

"We knew we had a strong team," he said. "We went into it knowing that if we played well we would come out on top."

The match against UVSC helped the Aggies end the season with six consecutive wins and an 8-2 record. Captain Albert Garner said he contributes the success to the size and speed of the team.

"We've physically taken it to every team we've played," he said. "We're kind of bruisers, but we do it legally."

Garner said the Aggies are hoping their performance during the fall will earn them the respect they deserve, and he believes it has.
