USU Distance Ed Names Academic Program Development Executive Director

Dennis Nelson was named executive director of academic program development for Regional Campuses and Distance Education at Utah State University July 1.

Nelson has been a professor at USU in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department since 1986. Most recently he was interim department head.

“I am excited about the challenge of using my years of experience as a faculty member and administrator in a whole new realm of educational delivery,” Nelson said. “This is a great opportunity to serve the statewide community and provide educational opportunities to individuals who otherwise might not have the chance to further their education.”

Nelson said he feels the future of education is in making it readily accessible and using technology to bring it to both traditional and non-traditional students.

“USU is poised to be the major force in making this happen, and it is a great time to be involved as new technologies and audiences are identified,” he said.

Vincent Lafferty, interim executive director for the Tooele Regional Campus and another executive director for academic program development, welcomes Nelson to the team.

“With his experience as a faculty member and former department head, Dr. Nelson has the unique background and ability to help Regional Campuses and Distance Education expand its programs and course offerings to meet the needs of the citizens of Utah.”

Nelson earned his bachelor’s degree in recreation management from Utah State University, master’s degree in community recreation education from Brigham Young University and doctorate of education from Oregon State University in adult education.
