USU Faculty Member Fazilat Soukhakian Unveils New Photography Exhibition: 'Under the Same Sky'

The Caine College of the Arts is presenting "Under the Same Sky," a photographic exhibition by internationally recognized artist and Associate Professor of Photography Fazilat Soukhakian.

The exhibition, which opened on Aug. 9, is currently on view at the Material Art Gallery and will run through Sept. 20.

"Under the Same Sky" invites viewers to explore the complexities of the human experience, emphasizing the universal emotions that connect us all, regardless of our backgrounds or circumstances. Through her powerful imagery, Soukhakian delves into themes such as resilience, offering a visual narrative that reflects both the struggles and the enduring strength of humanity.

The exhibition will feature a series of special events, including:

  • Friday, Sept. 20
    • 6-8 p.m. • Closing Reception

Fazilat Soukhakian’s work is celebrated for its deep social engagement. Her photography not only documents these narratives but also seeks to inspire and empower audiences. "Under the Same Sky" exemplifies her commitment to using art as a means of social commentary and change.

Soukhakian’s background as one of Iran's few female photojournalists, combined with her academic achievements in the United States, brings a unique and powerful perspective to her work. This exhibition is a testament to her ongoing exploration of the shared human experience through a lens of resilience and transformation.

“I am deeply honored to display my work at the Material Art Gallery, which is dedicated to engaging with the community and uniting artists with the local residents,” Soukhakian said. “Each photograph in this exhibition holds great personal significance for me, yet I believe they all tell stories of our interconnectedness through shared emotions and experiences. This marks my first solo show in the Salt Lake City area, and I am thrilled to share my work with the community to which I am so closely connected.”

Fazilat Soukhakian is an Iranian-American artist, photographer and scholar. She is currently an associate professor of photography at Utah State University, where she continues to influence the next generation of artists and photographers. Her work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally, earning her recognition for her contributions to the dialogue on human dignity.

By showcasing the work of accomplished faculty like Fazilat Soukhakian, Utah State University continues to affirm its dedication to academic excellence and cultural enrichment.
