USU Names New Assistant Vice Provost for Distance Education

Dirk Anderson has been named assistant vice provost for Regional Campuses and Distance Education at Utah State University, July 1, 2008. He is filling the position previously held by Robert Wagner, who was named executive director of distance education earlier this year.

Anderson comes to USU from Bountiful, Utah, where he developed higher education budgets and policy in the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget. Previous to his move to Utah in 2006, he performed similar work for Gov. Schwarzenegger in the California Department of Finance in the areas of veterans’ affairs, statewide elections, and consumer regulation.

“Having toured the reaches of the state while working for the Governor’s office, I quickly came to appreciate the direct relationship between education and quality of life for residents of Utah,” Anderson said. “USU Regional Campuses and Distance Education provides increased access to higher education, and I can’t think of a better mission to which I’d like to contribute.”

Michelle Larson, assistant provost and chair of the search committee that hired Anderson, said Anderson will be a valuable addition to the Regional Campuses and Distance Education team and to Utah State University as a whole.

“Dirk Anderson brings with him a good balance of organizational, data analysis and communication skills,” Larson said. “This skill set, combined with his appreciation of USU’s mission, made Dirk an excellent match for the assistant vice provost position.”

Anderson earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brigham Young University in public policy.
