USU to Host National Conference for Women Undergrads in Science

Utah State University is one of 12 campuses in the United States and Canada selected by the American Physical Society to concurrently host the 2019 Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics, known as CUWiP, January 18-20. All undergraduate women interested in science are welcome to attend the three-day gathering, which will draw scholars from Utah, Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming and Nebraska.

“We are honored and very excited to be hosting this conference,” says Maria Rodriguez, USU conference organizer and assistant professor in USU’s Department of Physics. “This is a unique chance for our students to network with women physicists and learn about graduate study and professional opportunities.”

Women undergraduates of all majors are encouraged to apply for the conference, which requires a $45, all-inclusive registration fee. Waivers are available. The deadline for applications, available online, is Friday, October 12, 2018.

Keynote speaker for conference series is Fabiola Gianotti, director-general of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research based in Geneva, Switzerland. Her talk will be broadcast to USU’s conference site.

“Dr. Gianotti is a leading expert in experimental particle physics, as well as global leader in guiding scientific policy,” Rodriguez says. “She was elected spokesperson for the ATLAS Collaboration of more than 3,000 physicists from 38 countries, to report on historic findings about the Higgs boson elementary particle in 2012.”

In addition to the American Physical Society, the 2019 conference series is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. Local sponsors providing additional support for the USU conference are the USU Department of Physics and the USU College of Science.
