USU's Women in Aviation International Chapter to Host Girls in Aviation Day

Utah State University’s chapter of Women in Aviation International (WAI) is participating in a worldwide Girls in Aviation event, Saturday, September 15, at the Logan-Cache Airport. All girls ages 8-18 are invited.

Girls in Aviation Day introduces girls to careers in the aviation and aerospace industries. Hands-on activities will include “flying” a flight simulator, discovering how drones fly, and more.

USU WAI Chapter President, Kathleen Larson, a senior in the professional pilot program said “Last year, I overheard some girls say that Girls in Aviation was the best day ever. This year, I want to recreate that day for another 150 young minds.”

Lunch will be provided as well as dessert furnished by Yogurtland of Logan. Aviation professionals will share their experiences of working in the field. Featured speakers are Tristen Mazzu, a commercial airline pilot, was recently featured in in the Olay video “A Love Letter to Adversity,” and Desi Malan, a USU aviation graduate who works for Redtail Air Adventures flying tours and giving flight instruction in Moab, Utah.

Kaylee Roholt, academic advisor for aviation technology, said of the 358 students enrolled in USU’s aviation programs, 9 percent are women. Considering that women comprise just 6 percent of all commercial airline pilots, USU is above average with women comprising 9.5 percent of students enrolled in the fixed wing and rotor wing programs.

Numerous aviation companies, including Boeing, are supporting the Logan event by donating gifts for participants.

This year’s Logan Girls in Aviation Day event is a fundraiser for USU’s WAI chapter, which provides travel scholarships to selected students to attend the annual WAI conference. Students have opportunities to network with other aviators at the conference and are eligible for WAI scholarships.
